The short version: nerds think they uncovered this massive conspiracy because of relationship between game designers and journalists, specifically women game designers, and have used that to "root out corruption in game journalism, while not fully having an understanding of what corruption or journalism is, and if rooting out means organizing campaigns of harassment against said game designers and their friends.
Also it's gamergate because people are fucking stupid.
