palomino pencils? I thought they didn't make those any longer! You seem to get some really nice dark tones out of em, although it could just be the camera. If the blacks are that deep, I may have to look into these.
There's a lot of places where various elements are close enough that the tension between them makes them focal points. Like the roof corner meeting her left arm, or her pouch almost creating a tangent with the background, as well as the other roof creating a tangent by extension with her hair. Also, it's good to make sure to get rid of symmetry if you want a dynamic composition, and right now that rock between her legs is placed pretty much square in the middle. When you place things like this, with measurements repeating, it makes it look like it's floating.
F87- looks okay! I think the "foreground" value shapes in your bottom right and top left corners are a little redundant- They're going the exact same angle as the "midgro
Done with our two weeks with Meredith Gran. Here's the story I did, based on a weird ass world our group had created.

my recommendation at this stage would be to not cut her feet off - as a still from a movie it would probably be fine, but as a composed piece it doesn't establish her properly in the landscape. Or it looks like you just don't want to draw feet!

Whenever an artist cuts off the feet, I like to imagine they have some really funky appendages. Like draenei hooves, or a squirming mass of tentacles squirming across the ground.

Heh, this reminds me of Art Spiegelman's romance comic breakdowns, where he took panels from cheesy old romance comics and laid bare their repressed sexual tension by making them into pornography outside the borders of the panel.
Here's a Christmas card I drew for my office a while ago. It's finally going out to clients so I figure it's okay if I post it here. It's a one day job so some parts are a little flat, unfortunately, but the prints came out really nice and got all the details.
I'm not the painter but you seem to be lacking more dynamic lighting. You've got the bright rim light but everything else is a matte, solid. Maybe add more shading and transitions and what not .
Where's Bacon?
Bacon, say all of that but with your dark, arcane knowledge.
Well, I'm sure a lot of it has been said to me before, multiple times! And it is pretty early on still, so I will keep that in mind as I paint on it! Thanks
Great idea! I think it looks a lot better already, whatdya think?
I feel like the sword is pointing me right out of the painting. If the nearest foreground rocks on the right side had light that was stronger and basically "pointing" back to the figure, I think that might be enough to keep my eye in the picture, as far as the sword is concerned.

Well, I think you're right but I've moved on to try some composition studies. Bottom line is I want to paint something that's exciting to me and if I was already bored by it, I don't think the thumbnails / concept stage was successful.

I prefer A.
Edit: in case you are unsure if your composition has errors (and I'm not sure if I'm repeating someone or not) look at it upside down and reflected. In Photoshop and similar programs that would mean flip horizontal and vertical. You should be able to make out if things are wonky.

Edit: Here is the sketch so far, I really like this one and I think it will be fun to paint! Even though it's kinda the same as the first one, the composition feels more "fluid" ...?

I don't know what it is about digital painting, but colour sense seems to go out the window.

It's... pretty boring? I don't know if I like it. But fuck I've spent a couple days on the different versions so far...
I think it's back to studies and research...

a long cold winter, exhibition piece for tomorrow night.
Actually, the sword gives it more interest and direction. Getting rid of it makes the picture stagnate instead of flowing.
the feet are totally a good place to stop for the night.
I like 9.
