I also love how many people got Mega Man right.
I once read that Mario is more known worldwide than Mickey Mouse.
It's probably true. Mickey Mouse is pretty much just a mascot and hasn't been in any major Disney releases in literally decades. I know they've been putting out some (pretty good, from what I hear) shorts recently, but it's nothing compared to Mario's multiple AAA titles every year.
That stat/factoid dates all the way back to the late 80s, actually, though it's hard to imagine that the truth of it hasn't grown since then for the reasons you say.
...though there have been things like Epic Mickey, and kid-geared programming like Mickey's Clubhouse and House of Mouse.
Question! It says "Palutena is allowed" in the rules - is she crazy OP or something?
Palutena's specials are customizable, because they are all unlocked from the beginning. This differs from every other character (except the Miis) because you have to obtain their special moves, so they can't be used in the tournament because people may not have seen them before and that's not really fair.
I just can't get behind that thinking, personally. "You can't use a move unless I know it" just... I don't know. If you don't know it, then you will, then you learn and adapt. It's sort of the thing you do, you know?
On another note: amiibos have "FP" over their head, but I have no idea what that stands for. Anyone?

Smash Tour looks super confusing n' not great. How does it actually play?
I may end up using a fair few golden hammers on skipping Tour related stuff :P
The board part of it is super random, to the point where any attempts at strategy are likely to be torpedoed by some random crap happening.
And the board part of it doesn't even really matter in the end. I once dominated the board, got nine characters and pretty high stats, and lost in the final battle because I secured one less kill then an enemy who got a lucky assist trophy.

Yeah, mine was pretty much the opposite. I tanked the entire time on the board, and somehow pulled out a victory.
Good for getting items 'n things, but nothing I'd want to play for anything more than that, really.

You gotta remember that smash tour is, fundamentally, about smashing and not about touring, or being a board game.
There are two principal strategies; the hunter and the gatherer: the gatherer avoids confrontation and runs around trying to grab as many stat boosts, characters, and items as they can in preparation for the final battle. The hunter tries to get into as many battles as possible in order to win and grab trophies and characters off the other players.
For those that haven't got it all worked out linearly in their head, each turn goes like:
1. A random trophy is given to each player
2. Each player gets the chance to use a trophy they have to generate a board effect, anything from doubling their own move to bouncing other players they pass to random spaces
3. Players "roll" to move
4. Players move their avatar Mii along the spaces, collecting stat boosts and items they pass
5. If anyone ended on the same space as another Mii, a battle occurs with a random condition
6. If a battle is about to happen, players get to choose a trophy to use to add an effect like starting with an item
7. The battle winner steals a trophy from second place, a character from third place and fourth just loses a character
8. Next turn! An event (koffing covering the board in smoke etc.) might occur if it's a turn divisible by five (I think).
9. When there are no turns left everyone gets bonuses based on how well they did
10. The final battle! Not Actually A Stock Match!
Basically the whole thing is an excuse to get into a series of smash battles with random effects more than it is a board game. In fact calling it a board game is probably half the problem right there.

Smash selling many copies isn't the issue though. I mean is anyone actually having trouble getting the game itself?
It's just the various bits and bobs around it. The GCC adapter box is especially hard to predict since folk will either buy zero, one, or two per game sold and there's no way to really determine who will do which in advance, short of a massive survey.
Gah, I was so fucking close to beating Master Fortress. It probably would've taken one more good hit, but then I got knocked into a danger zone and died. The previous fight went amazingly well, I got to Master Fortress while I only had like 20% damage.
In other infuriating news: I was really close to getting my stat boosts back from the Metroid in Smash Tour. I was literally right next to it, rolled a 2 and was about to touch it..but then one of the other players used a "warp to the next checkpoint" trophy and, wouldn't you know it, warped right on top of the Metroid.

For as much as I disliked Smash Run on 3DS, I'd love to have it on Wii U now that I've played the shitfest that is Smash Tour.
Ugh, I don't know how I'm ever going to manage to take down an opponent in cruel smash. I just get completely destroyed before I even have time to deal significant damage to anyone.

Counter. Turn their crap back in their faces (of particular note is Iai Counter, which is stronger AND launches behind you, so using it at the edge will just lob them off). Or abuse their utter lack of recovery and AI weaknesses.

Use Lucina jump off right edge, drift under the platform while you fall and recover up into the platform, it will push you along and let you grab the edge while also damaging the other fighters.
Rinse repeat until desired number of fighters are dead.
Or so I've heard, I have yet to try this myself.

So I bought this, having never played a Smash with any seriousness before. Mostly my six year old has been playing it. Her favorite character so far is King Dedede, but I think that's mostly because she likes to run around yelling "Dedede, dedede" over and over.
Can anyone recommend a decent bare bones, literally never played Smash with any sort of seriousness, newbie guide to this? Just the basic stuff you need to know to even have a conversation with someone about the game technically. I don't even know what terms like "edge guard" mean (though I can make a decent educated guess I'm sure).

I got a few kills in Cruel Smash by spamming Kirby's cutter at the edge. Once you've racked up enough damage, use stone. The AI makes little attempt to avoid either of these moves.

Is this a guide for you or your daughter?
Oh it's for me, haha. Sorry, I should have made that clear. She has no aspirations to do anything more than spin Dedede's hammer at this point.

It can't be worse than Bowser's jacked up running animation from previous games. He just kindof scootches across the floor, it's weird. I always assumed it was a glitch, but I noticed Giga Bowser does the exact same scootch in Smash 4 (though maybe it's a joke at this point?).

Gameexplain had a very informative 'cheat' to get the achievement/duckhunt duo. Sorry don't have the link, but just look it up on youtube gameexplain and cruel smash. :-)

I got one kill in Cruel Smash by just kind of beating them back with the Monado as Shulk. Nudged one off far enough that the computer fucked up it's recovery.

For the absolute complete basics, there's the how to play video in the game.
It's sort of hidden away under Games & More -> Vault -> Videos.
The actual game itself is fun, though! I'm just sad I couldn't get my buddies over this weekend. This is not a game to play solo, and online is... highly variable. I really have very little idea what I'm doing, but spamming Sonic's various spin specials seems to work out 50% of the time.

It's a bit too much information too fast though. I showed it to my gf and when it was done she was all, 'so I can move left and right?'
I just turned off all items, did the FD version of the Animal crossing stage (her favorite game) and gave her the female villager.
She: Villager? Wait, why aint I called the mayor anymore?
Me: Bowser jr. wants to be the new major. NOW KICK HIS SPIKEY ASS OUT OF YOUR TOWN.
Much more effective.

...okay, I have something else to complain about: I was apparently born blind and nobody ever told me x_x.
Thanks for pointing out it was there to me. I hadn't even seen it.
Though based on the dog's animations, the zapper guy might not be entirely on their side.

What do you even get for that? Because it doesn't sound like one I'm too eager to attempt.
Easier still, they seem to all replicate the respective promo art for the character.
