Stuff to do in Portland (ME)
Next Friday I'm taking the bus up to Portland for a friend's birthday. I'm going to have about eight hours to kill. Tell me stuff to do!
Things I definitely want to do:
- Get lunch (I'm going to be getting there around noontime)
- Go to a good bookstore
- Go to a good comics shop (we have none around here so when I'm traveling in big metro areas I try to seek them out)
Other than that, I'm open to suggestions!

Powell's Books could quite literally cover all three of these and occupy eight hours of your time.
ME
That is very obvious now.
Dammit.
If you're looking for more of a sit-down lunch, Hot Suppa (703 Congress St) is amazing.
There's also the Public Market House, lots of different options there and they are all tasty. It's also just a cool place to sit and eat, although it can get very busy depending on the time and day.
For comics, I like going to Coast City Comics (634 Congress St). The staff has always been friendly to me and the hubs, they've got some fun toys and things in addition to the comics. And bring quarters - they've got pinball machines. There's also Casablanca comics but I haven't gone there yet so I can't speak to how they are.
For bookstore, Longfellow books should be on your list of stops, they are at 1 Monument Way.
I think there's a few cool art galleries in the area too, but I can't think of any names in particular.
Go to Zapoteca for excellent Mexican food
Go to Miyake for excellent sushi.
Go to Standard Bakery for (debatably) one of the best baguettes in the country.
Go to Videoport and appreciate one of the last remnants of "ma and pa" DVD/video rental stores.
Ugh, so homesick...
EDIT: Go to Otto's Pizzeria and get the mashed potato and sausage toppings. You will not regret this decision.
The waterfront is just some touristy stuff (but not as good as a real tourist town), I'd skip it unless there's something you want to do.
Duck Fat and Novare Res are the way. Marcy's is also great. Portland is for eating and drinking (most restaurants per capita in the country), so enjoy the fresh seafood and the work hard/play hard philosophy of the town.
