Question: if I have only played enough of Triforce Heroes to get the basic clothes, I would not necessarily be able to join shenanigans in later levels, would I? (Leaving aside that it's probably a bad idea on its own merits, even if I'm no neophyte to Zelda games.)

    http://nintendoeverything.com/hyrule-warriors-legends-details-explain-the-my-fairy-system-and-adventure-modes-great-sea-map/
Hyrule Warriors Legends is once again featured in this week’s issue of Famitsu. As previously mentioned, the magazine highlights a new “My Fairy” system and Great Sea map in Adventure Mode.

Fairies act as partners on your journey in Adventure Mode. If befriended, they will be in “My Fairy”. Fairies can unleash devastating attacks using fairy magic, and you can also customize special attributes. Just one can be taken into battle at a time.

As far as raising fairies goes, you have the freedom to raise/customize them as you please. Fairies can then level up and gain new special skills. Fairy magic also increases as their levels rise, letting them accompany you on harder missions.

There’s various food to find in Adventure Mode, which can increase certain attributes and bring in new skills. The player can decide whether to make them balanced in all stats or a specialist in one. Lonlon Milk, Magic Beans, Rock Sirloin, and more are included as food. Also, it’s possible to find more powerful food in higher difficulty levels.

Players can also discover “Fairy Wear” (clothes), and can be dressed in different ways. This consists of clothes and accessories similar to those worn by other characters throughout the Zelda series. Korok Mask, Sheikah Suit, Zora Skirt, and Pirate’s Bandanna are mentioned as examples.

Rental skills – of which a maximum of three slots can be filled – allow fairies to support you in battle. They’ll learn new skills by leveling up parameters, but players can also rent skills from other fairies that others have raised. Because the rented skills only last one day, when faced with a hard mission, you should borrow powerful skills from friends and aim to clear it on that very day.

Here are the different fairy settings included:

    1. Dining – Raise your Fairy by feeding it certain foods
    2. Salon – Change your Fairy’s clothing/equipment
    3. School – Gain “rental skills” for your Fairy
    4. Party – Interact with players via local wireless. You can then rental skills from them.

Moving on a bit, The Great Sea is included as a new map in Adventure Mode. The main map is the sea with various islands spanning the waters. You can fulfill certain criteria to unlock special character outfits across the Great Sea and gain other goodies.

Below are ten new items featured in The Great Sea map:

    1. Wind Waker – Can break down walls of wind to allow passage
    2. Salvage Arm – Can hoist up buried treasure and other rewards
    3. Seachart – Fish men can update the chart for you to help discover new battles
    4. Cannon – When used to destroy the enemy forts, it removes unfair rules/handicaps from the very start of the resulting battle
    5. Hero’s Bow – When used to remove Cyclones, it will also remove unfair rules/handicaps from the very start of the resulting battle
    6. Boomerang – Can defeat the Large Octopus, removing any unfair rules/handicaps from the very start of the resulting battle
    7. Hyoi Pear – Allows use of Seagulls to find hidden treasure. Useful for gaining great rewards
    8. Power Bracelets – Can lift up heavy boulders to clear the way to a new battle
    9. Hammer – Can use the hammer on switches to clear the way to a new battle
    10. Deku Leaf – Can glide on the wind to hidden areas to discover new rewards

Lastly, Famitsu points out that Wii U has a “Network Link” mode. On 3DS, this takes on the form of “StreetPass Link”. Famistu also teases a special DLC costume that will be revealed at another time.

A speculation on the size of Zelda U's map, in relation to the map of Xenoblade Chronicles X. By me, some credit to Scooptendo.

    zelda-wii-u-world-map.jpg

Scooptendo's composite map is roughly 492 x 346 pixels (601 diagonal). My point of comparison are the only features which we can reasonably expect are comparable in size: rivers. Wide rivers (in this case, I measured the western river, below the fat bend but before it splits, where it's wider than other rivers) i used are 3 to 4 pixels wide, from a rough estimate. Between the green arrow of Link's position and the red X target zone is a line roughly 40 pixels long. This line takes "4 to 5 minutes" to traverse by horse, per Aonuma.

    Primordial_Wilderness_map.png

I compared this to a map of Primordia. I drew a square around the main landmass to accommodate for Primordia's odd shape, starting from the horn corner in the northwest, with its southern line ending at the residential district of NLA, and east end at the cape in the northeast being the east side of the square. This square was 576 x 351 (674 diagonal. This is important, meaning the XCX map is 1.12x the scale for consistency), the comparison point, wide rivers about 7 pixels wide. Wide rivers are wider on the Primordia map, meaning the Zelda map is larger than Primordia. Assuming that these rivers are of comparable width, this means that the Zelda U map could be twice as large as Primordia, one region of XCX.

The next test would be to "sprint" along a line 45 pixels long on my XCX map (to scale against 40 in the Zelda map), and see how long it takes. This is harder because i'm assuming XCX sprinting is about the same speed as going horseback in Zelda U. If a 40-pixel line takes 4:30 (lit., between four and five minutes) to ride in Zelda U, how long does it take to run the equivalent 45 pixels in Primordia?

    EJePwVt.png
This is a zoom in on the distance that Aonuma says will take 4:30 to traverse. It seems to be a valley leading to a hill, so a comparable distance in XCX would be jumping into a valley and towards another hill. So I will pick a 45-pixel line with similar terrain and run. Not counting any time where i run into enemies, of course, and see where that compares.

Also assuming that the massive overhauls of the game haven't badly shrunk or grown the world.

This has been me killing time in one of my last-ever grad school classes. Thank you for your indulgence.

Hmm. 45 pixel run took me about 1 minute, avoiding obstacles along the way so it wasn't a straight line. I think there's cause to estimate Zelda U map is about 3x as big as primordia, so maybe about 3/5ths the size of XCX total?

So HW Legends sounds like it has a lot of differences between it and HW proper on Wii U. Does that mean I have to give Nintendo more money? I was just assuming they were the same. But this Linkle business plus the new fairy thing in adventure mode sounds like a lot of fun.

Has there been a single Wii U game that required a Wii Remote? It seems like they made a point that every Wii U game is playable with the default controller.

None that I can think of, but there may have been a 3rd party one or something. Technically the Wii Virtual Console (or whatever you call it) ones do (those are *sort of* Wii U games since they run off the Wii U OS instead of the Wii's).

I honestly think it's just a matter of - everyone has the gamepad for sure, so it makes sense to automatically support that. That probably drives what types of games were developed and what controllers were supported. TBH I can't even think of a good Wiimote game on the system other than Pikmin 3...

I was just kinda worried they were going to pretty up the Wii version of TP, and keep it with the silly waggle control scheme.

No, it's been totally confirmed they are actually basing it on the Gamecube version. And controller (i.e. not wiimote) prompts can be seen in the trailer. The speculation is that it will basically have Wind Waker HD's control scheme where you could use the gamepad for gyro aiming, but otherwise it's normal controls. Given that the game is *not* flipped, it's probably likely the wiimote controls actually aren't supported (unless you can play flipped as well?)

I still don't fully understand why you have to flip the entire game world just to switch sword hands on Link.

The game was mostly done when they decided to port it, and they didn't want to completely re-animate Link I think. There are probably also gameplay implications for Link swinging to the left instead of to the right - maybe it ruined some of the fights (i.e. if a monster is holding a shield in their right hand, left-handed Link could theoretically hit them while right-handed Link would hit the shield).

I figured it was because a majority of the people are right handed. So them holding the Wii Remote in their right hand and swinging to make Link swing a sword in his left hand would be incredibly jarring for the player. I guess we could ask anyone who is left handed and played Skyward Sword.

    LBD_Nytetrayn
  • PLAPLA The process.Registered User regular
Yeah, that is why they changed Link's handedness, but not why the flip was universal.

  • urahonkyurahonky Registered User regular
Oh I see. Yeah it was easier. Sorry I was thinking too shallow on that one.

  • EnlongEnlong Registered User regular
Probably because it was easier than re-shooting cutscenes and puzzle sequences for a Link animating in the other direction.
