Can I play with a mix of Friends and Random online people? Say, connect with a friend online, and then recruit a random person as our 3rd? Or do I need two people to play as Friends?

No, sadly. You need to either play with 2 others online or 2 others in person.

Can this even be done with Download Play? Say I have one friend in the same room as me without the game.

I don't think so since online and download play are in different rooms of the castle. NM, I'm wrong here.

That is not true. Online, Local, and Download play are all the same room. Then there is solo play, and then there is the Colosseum.
I don't know if you can mix Download and Friends and Random, though.

Great change. The tears did tend to drag those sections down. Honestly I felt like a lot of the forced Wolf Link sections tended to drag the game down in general :P
Biggest thing I need to know about though is if they improved the insanely tedious opening of the game. That really needs to be streamlined.
I would also hope they've fixed the rupee thing where it explains what every rupee denomination is every single time you load a save (the worst is when you pick up a green or blue rupee from a bush or something and it pauses to tell you). Do it once at the start of the game and that's it! I fully expect that to be fixed - that should be an easy one and this is the only Zelda game with that annoyance.
I'm also crossing my fingers they improved the movement speed of the iron boots on magnets. I went back to the game in 2014 due to Hyrule Warriors hype and MAN is the second dungeon super tedious because of how slow you move through those sections.
I used the iron boots glitch to get through that dungeon faster. You unequip the boots midair as you were pulled onto the magnetic surfaces and you can run full speed while still being attached to the walls and ceiling.

They probably won't do this but it would be cool if they added an extra dungeon or something that made better use of tools like the Spinner or Ball and Chain. It's a shame how worthless those items tend to be outside their dungeons (other than a few random overworld areas).
Wind Waker HD did add a couple new mini dungeons to the Triforce hunt so maybe they'll do something like that.
I don't remember them adding any new mini dungeons or the like in WW. They just redistributed the pieces, and in some cases replaced the triforce chart with the triforce itself.

There was a new one under the Villa I think. Also I feel like one more (though that may have just been a single room, hard to remember). Nothing huge mind you. But still new.
Makes me wonder about that seemingly ordinary schoolteacher, who has a private cabana with a sapient painting butler built atop a maze packed with zombies.

Oh really? I guess I'm wrong. I don't remember it at all in the original.
Spinner? Ball and Chain? Try the dominion rod. An item that shut itself down upon leaving the dungeon.
I'm pretty sure you used it a couple times on mini statue puzzles in the overworld?
I think so but only a couple if I remember right. Overall the items in the game are not well used. You generally use them in the dungeon you get them in, and then barely ever again. Compare that to like, the Hookshot or Deku Leaf or Megaton Hammer, etc.
Edit: Hell, the more I think of it - even stuff like the Deku Leaf they added uses to like being able to wave it to blow windmills and such. IMO the best Zelda items were the ones that were versatile. This goes all the way back to the first game where many were both weapons and tools (ex: bombs, candle, boomerang, etc).
I like the Zelda games where most of the items you get aren't even all that important and they're mostly just weapons that let you approach fights in new ways.
Zelda 1 was largely that way. The raft was as bad as the dominion rod in terms of minimal use, ladder and power bracelet were close contenders, and then almost everything else was unnecessary but great for adding to your arsenal.

The ladder is used enough that I think it's a decent addition. If you want to look at it another way, it gives you a tool in water rooms to attack enemies from safety (enemies won't path on water so you can stand on it to attack them), which is a secondary use. I agree about Raft and Power Bracelet, but at least with PB it's offered as an optional, free item (it basically gives you access to warps and can be totally skipped if you want and/or never find it).

Triforce Heroes (I almost typed Triforce Herpes) is frustrating to no end. I have few friends here with 3DS systems, and only a couple that have the game. Having to rely on rando Links online with the bad (but adorable) communication panel is painful.
Anything is better than playing it solo, though.

I recommend it for everyone.
Oh yeah, I bought that set a couple years ago. Very nice.

The Beetle takes second place.

And now I'm remembering that annoying treasure room right at the end of Hyrule Castle with way more rupees than you can likely carry.
And one box full of bee larvae. Ganondorf is such a prankster.
Question is: if I open a chest with rupees and I'm at max, does it still put the rupees back?
