On the playground is where I spent most of my days...
(ok so seriously)
Me and my girlfriend are looking to move into an apartment on our own. We need some PA'ers (thats pennsylvania'ers, not just penny-arcadeers, heh) to lead us in the right direction. Basically we need something close enough to Philly for work, something reasonably close to West Chester. I'm from Florida so I dont know the area at all, this is kind of an abrupt relocation for me.
Me and the girl have been looking on craigslist, but each time she's visited a place that looked promising, she winds up in the ghetto and gets scared. (She was almost pulled into a car and had to run...so her fears are kinda warranted) So, we just need some advice on what neighborhoods to look into, and what places to avoid. Our price range is admittedly tight, so I understand that I'm not looking for anything fancy.. just somewhere decent, and somewhere safe. I don't have a job lined up, but I do have some savings, and support from my parents.
As the co-habitant there I can second this one.
However I have heard nothing but praise from friends and co-workers who have lived at Halstead (down the road from Seven Oaks) and Wynterbrook (I think that's how they spell it).
don't live in Philadelphia proper.. You will pay out the ass for a decent apartment, and you will pay out the ass in the city tax.
I live in the suburbs (Drexel Hill specifically).. I can drive into the city via multiple routes in 15-20 min, and I have a large amount of public transportation available in the 'L' and regional rail lines.
As for getting to west chester, i know nothing about prices, etc only that i always assumed it was an expensive area. Depending on how far you need to drive into WC, my area is convienient as well.
Well I'll have a car, so I figure on commuting to work. I don't need to travel too often to west chester, so if its within driving distance, that's cool. Mainly looking for something outside of the city proper, so any advice like that would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: i LOLED a little too hard at that one. Madness I say!
Commuting to work is fine, but unless you have parking where you are working in the city, you are better off taking a train in. This is better still if you are going to work off the 'main' streets as well (market, chestnut, etc).. if you are working in some remote philly section, then, well, YMMV.
Septa is the company (septa.org) that does the transportation. From 69th street, you can take the 'l'; into the city every 7 minutes during rush hour times. There used to be some apartment finder books around here that listed all kinds of places .. but apartments.com can't be bad.
Avoid Chester. Everyplace else has good and bad parts. At apartments.com .. look in philly & vicinity, then the delaware county area.

help us!
Born and raised in West Chester. You may want to look at Seven Oaks which is right across from Henderson Highschool. I've heard they range anywhere from $700 and up. I know my brother used to rent a two floor apartment on Walnut street for $1200/mo. Cambridge hall, they're expensive for their small size, but you may wanna look anyway(used to live there). You may wanna check out the West Chester Commons, I dunno how much they run but I can ask a friend for you. Oh, and I forgot, check out Hallstead, it's right down the road from the Chester County Hospital.
The Downingtown Commons they are reasonable and a nice size. There's another complex right off of business 30, but I forget what it's called and how much they run right now. If you need someone to be a tour guide so you can learn your way around, just lemme know. :P
Oh, and right in between Exton and West Chester there are town houses in Indian King, it's off of Boot Road and 100, dunno how much they run either though.
Pretty much the only area you need to avoid around here is Coatesville.
those apartments right off of Business 30 are called Cornerstone Terrace, they run 900-1300 a month depending on floorplan. My fiance looked here when we moved to the area, but did not like the way the apartments were layed out at all... you pay for floor space that you can barely use due to the way it is setup.
There is a very nice new construction apartment complex in Coatesville (just barely). It is called Millview Apartments. They are located on a big hill overlooking Coatesville. We were going to move into this place if we had not moved back to Jersey. Nice, Well kept, gated community. Nice clubhouse/pool, and cool little micro chip keys.
You can try the philly suburbs, maybe around Ardmore or Manayunk. The prices for rent aren't too bad, and the commute is bearable if you don't leave during rush hour. I've lived in both during college, the Ardmore place right on the main line, and they were safe enough.

Those aren't the ones I'm thinking of, they're a little bit before Williamsburg Village.
Guys this information is all great, please keep it coming. I'm driving up next week to check out places with the girl, so I'll look into everyone suggestions. Any information that includes price ranges are extremely helpful, as as I admit, although I have some money saved up, unfortunately circumstances are forcing me to move without time to line up a job. So definately anything on the lower end of the scale that is still decent (again doesn't havto be the bee's knees just yet, baby steps) would be ideal.
Once I get settled, I plan to aggressively look for a job (even if its flipping burgers to get by) and then perhaps move into a better place after a couple of months. So uhm, I guess I could ask whats the job market for IT like in the greater philly area?
depends on what part of the IT field you work in. I have seen alot of Network Tech jobs, and some PC maintenance jobs. There are a few Consultant companies around, who can help with finding you an IT job. There is nothing cheap about the areas I was speaking about earlier. I was paying 900 a month, most of everything I looked at was 1-1.5k a month, with water being about the only thing included in your rent.
Try the King of Prussia area. I have a few friends that live in the Kingswood apartments off of Gulph Road and they dont seem to have too many complaints other than the traffic that can be pretty terrible around rush hour. It's not far from the "Dub C" either. Just a straight shot down 202 and it's not too far from the city. There are entrances and exits for 76 very close by.
The IT market is pretty decent around here. Put a resume on Monster and you will be called more often than not.
Its east philly, but Fox Chase is a pretty decent area. Most of the apartments around here are shit, but they are cheap and its relatively safe. there is a train station there so sommuting shouldnt be too much of a drag.

I have few friends living in the area, and it seems like housing there is pretty expensive. Its a commercial and industrial hot-spot.

This whole area is pretty expensive these days. Fucking M. Night Shyamalan is building a house 5 minutes down the road from me. He spent nearly 18 million just for the property.
Anyway...West Chester, Ardmore, KoP, Devon, Wayne, Manayunk, P-ville, even my little home town of Malvern are all getting pricey.
Not to dig up an old thread, but this caught my eye
I live in the 'yunk and pay 800$/month for my apartment, includes heat, hot water, basic cable, etc. etc. etc. i only pay electric and internet.
I work in Exton and it takes about 45+ minutes to get out to Exton in the morning, which blows balls but I have a good job so it's worth it.
If you need to be in West Chester, I would highly suggest getting an apartment there (its a young/college town so there is a good deal of inexpensive and overpriced crappy housing), Exton, Downingtown etc. Complexes in all those areas, as well as the areas mentioned by other people can be a bit pricey, but you'll be basically guaranteed a solid, homeless-person free place to live.
Now, if you are going to work IN Philly, I would reccomend Manayunk, Roxborough, Overbook/City Line, Chestnut Hill or Mt. Airy. They're all close enough to center city to hop on a train, or a quick jump on 76 to get pretty much anywhere.
I've been in the area for a long time and lived pretty much everywhere, so if you have any questions just ask.
There is NO such thing as a quick jump on 76. Unless you are on the road < 7 am, you have a long long ride ahead of you. And that was when i was going from Philly to malvern
the only bad parts of 76 (that i am forced to deal with, i dont have to go through the city which is a major thorn in any drivers side) in the morning are right around/before city line and right around/before conshohoken. if you can get past those with little trouble you're set. Both of which can also be avoided by west river drive/23.
When I was coming from downtown I used to cut down to west river to either city line (unless it was jammed) or just keep going down 23 to conshy.
Now going into the city is a totally different beast, I'd rather take the r6.
I used to live in Media, right on Baltimore Ave, and highly recommend it. It's a cute little town, excellent food, nice small-town atmosphere, and it's probably a half hour tops into the city. I just had a small efficiency, but I only paid $400 a month. The Media Real Estate Company was really helpful (it was my first apartment and I was moving to it sight unseen from Sacramento) so I'll give them a plug too.
Can't recommend Media enough, though. Best place I've ever lived.
Hey guys, thanks for all the info. I found a place in university city so I'm good to go. But now I just need a job. But that's probably a whole 'nother thread.

Especially at that time of the morning. He must have been really moving or driving like an ass.
