First real assassination mission (remember those?) is great in AC Unity. Feels weird that it's been so long since elaborate assassinations have been a part of these games.
Is it an actual, sneaking possible, patience is key, fun when you finally take them down and then get away freely assassination? Or is it an annoying chase down or heavily guarded location you have to break into/out of?
I hated that so many assassinations weren't able to be planned and methodical.
It can be played a variety of ways, and there are clear planned methods (which is the way I did it), more details in the spoiler.
It's kind of all three, but how you play it is up to you. It takes place in Notre Dame and you can just sneak in through an open window if you want, or you can follow the target's 2nd in command and learn where he plans to meet the target inside (in this case a confessional booth). You can also find a priest's keys which unlock some doors that makes for a quiet escape route. If you go in at ground level it's heavily guarded but if you take the upper areas it's pretty light. I snuck into the confessional and killed him because he thought I was 2nd in command, and snuck away quietly. But you can also just air assassinate him if you want a more direct approach and don't mind dealing with his guards. It gives you a pretty impressive amount of freedom to tackle it.
- Suits for Batman and Robin continue to exist, but this time, once you unlock a suit you can switch between them at will, Lego City Undercover-style. There appear to be eight suits each, counting the normal outfits.
- Alfred has an identical moveset to Captain America.
- Martian Manhunter is really freaking badass.
- Seriously, he can fly, turn into a megafig, and fly as a megafig. Plus he has laser vision and super senses and maybe a whole bunch of other things, I decided to take a break right after getting him.
On the third day of not Christmas my true love gave to me, two copies of Burnout, one for Origin and one for Steam.
Note: One copy is for Origin and the other is for Steam, who gets which copy from the winners selected will be completely random.
@The_Spaniard unfortunately you can't give away Origin games through Steamgifts. You and/or the winner can get suspended because their system checks if the games are redeemed on Steam.
You should be able to cancel it and make a new one with just one copy, though.
@Sumanai really? I thought that all the winner had to do was check a box saying that they got it. Does the system really check if they redeemed it in their Steam even if they themselves verify that they got it?
Holy shit, lots to catch up on, this is why I shouldn't sleep in.
#1 These chest skill checks for chests sound stupid in ACU because there was no skill meter in the first 4 core games. Putting it in sounds like GTA:SA, good idea, but bad implementation (fucking swim skill)
Is AC unity your regular AC with performance issues? At least that's the idea I get.
Well, there's also the freemium micro-transactions.
Wait, are they real? I assumed from what little I saw of the game it was a joking sendup of freemium stuff within the animus/helix, but you can actually spend money for real?
God Ubisoft, that is the definition of having your cake and eating it.
Well, the game is set in the French Revolution, so seems fitting that somebody is eating cake.
This has nothing to do with cake. It's more like getting punched in the face AND getting punched in the groin.
Now now, don't lose your head. I'm sure it's not that bad.
Yeah, I'll just see myself out. Be sure to tip the waitstaff!
I didn't know who to quote, so you are it. I just removed all the AC games from my wish list. I'm sure they are good games in there own, but I guess if this is the way the series goes, I have other things to play. I guess it is less I refuse to use a service, and more, Meh, you don't draw me in enough to use the service over what I have. A lot of games all ready.
GOG.com is starting their Fall sale, and Mount and Blade is free for the next 48 hours or so.
I keep waiting for the chorus of "Not on Steam, not interested."
Huh. Strange.
See above, Why I may not go to a service because the game doesn't draw me, I get my free stuff all the time. I'm always checking origin/xbox gold/here for free games. I might never play them, but I sure collect free stuff. I'm also terrible at fairs. I spend more time in the "swag" pavilion than other things. I think I have a problem with free things. On that note HiT BiT tells me I have to visit GoG ever day now.
Assassin's Creed 1 is a nice experience.
2 and Brotherhood are better "games" central around a better character.
Revolution closes off the story about the assassin characters of the first two games but lack antagonists to make the fights memorable.
GOG.com also has their version of flash sales, except they don't all end at the same time, checking their front page now, its another sale ending and a new one starting every hour, YOU CAN NEVER LOOK AWAY!
http://store.steampowered.com/app/282070/
Finally, that game is made by real soldiers so if Konami and Battle for Falluja left a bad taste in your mouth, this is nice opportunity for you.
GOG.com is a good website to have an account for because they often bring old games out sooner and in better condition than steam. The entire Interplay catalog, from Jagged Alliance to Freespace, was only available on there for a number of years before steam. Right now, the Disney deal ensures that its the only place you can get those glorious flight sims everyone wants to play.

Yes, it does. (well, at least, they say it does... Can't personally confirm it's absolutely true)

Well crap, everyone I apologize, I'm going to have to scuttle the Burnout giveaway and redo it so that it's only a single copy of the game. Damn this rule is just making it harder to give away more games. Oh double dammit I can't do more giveaways until my current ones expire. Well I guess for a few more days I can't continue the 12 days of NOT Christmas.
I once confused two winners when I made a bunch of Sherlock Holmes giveaways. They both marked their game as received even though they got the wrong game and I made a support ticket.
Nobody ever did anything to the ticket or got in trouble, so either steamgifts is understanding about these things or enforcement is minimal.

Conversely, I think I was once temp banned from SteamGifts because I didn't understand how it worked at first and gave a game I won away to someone else.
I played 2 hours of To the Moon last night. I've gotten to the wedding and noticed that the two-colored rabbit is the same color as River's wedding dress. Don't know if that's important yet. I've already cried quite a bit. SO GOOD!

I don't know, maybe I will add them back to the wishlist some day. But I have so much on my wishlist (46 games - $908.45 - ouch). And well this thread and backlog. I guess I'm just not as interested as I was when I added the, a while ago. And now I want to go home and play xcom some more. Stupid work, oh wait it pays for my school so I can get a real job and have more free time.
Re: Steamgifts, yeah, that system exists because everyone would exploit the contributor system otherwise.
In other news, after more than one hour, I just beat chapter 7 in Valkyria Chronicles on my first try, not sure what all the fuss was about.
Ok, I admit I did reload a save a couple of times and did a tiny bit of research on how to hurt the tank but that was it... and then "she" showed up and caught me completely off guard but I still managed to make it work. I now understand why some people consider it such bullshit and they are probably not wrong.
Is it odd that I love State of Decay, I keep restarting it to maximize my characters (OMG! ITS SUCH A GREAT RPG), but I absolutely hate the color scheme with a fiery passion?
This is your semi-regular notice that we have an active Marvel Heroes guild and welcome anyone from PA who would like to join. Game is F2P (just ignore my poor spending habits) and is on Steam. Up to 40 playable heroes now, with 3 more being added before end of December, along with new game content. And no, I do not work for them :P
If interested, feel free to post or PM me for invite in the thread.
- The overworld is Harry Potter-style, with you wandering around various bases connected by teleporters.
- The character that you have to rescue in every level is Adam West.
- For no apparent reason even to himself, Conan O'Brien is in the Batcave, and explains various parts of it.
- Cyborg has selectable suits as well, though most of them seem to be shared with Batman or Robin.
- If the forum software detects that you're using hyphens to make a list, it will automatically add one on the next line whenever you press Enter.
Still a couple of copies of Insurgency available to anyone who hasn't snaffled it yet:

Yesterday I dabbled in Euro Truck Simulator 2. During the tutorial, I crashed the truck, got fined for stopping a little too late at a red light, and spent 10 minutes trying to reverse it into the cargo bay. Too much Saints Row IV recently maybe!
I fail at truckin'. In hindsight I probably should've given the game away!

Welp, that wraps up another 15 hours of Valkyria Chronicles today. And what a time to stop playing for the night.
Chapter 11. Right in the feels. I cried.
You should just post that as a steam review, 30 hours in two days? Must be a hell of a game.
Valkyria Chronicles is my GOTY. Does it count if a 6 year old game just got ported to PC this year? Shut up I don't care.
Final Fantasy Tactics was one of my absolute favourite games back on the PlayStation 1 (later, Front Mission 3 because it was basically FFT with mechs) and I'm getting a similar experience with VC, with the added bonus that your non-storyline squadmates aren't as faceless/interchangable; they each have their own little quirks and bonuses/penalties and chemistry between one another so it's fun to mix and match them for fights.
The art style is absolutely fantastic; I've always been a fan of stylistic aesthetic over realistic because games that try to look real are the quickest to become extremely dated-looking. VC's years old and still looks great because it has a unique art design.
Despite some difficulty spikes in some of the chapters (anyone who's played up to chapter 7 knows what I'm talking about) I feel that the difficulty curve has been pretty steady and I haven't felt overwhelmed by any missions. I was happy to see that it rewards you for creative thinking in some situations. I'm up to chapter 12 and have only played each available skirmish once on Normal difficulty, but I understand you can grind them for more XP and money should you feel the need to.
I like the urgency in combat to position your characters and act with them as quickly as possible to limit damage from any interception fire. That's quite a nice change from other turn-based games where you can just sit there and think about your next move. I like how it encourages you to do that kind of thinking when looking at the tactical map, not when you're in direct control of one of your soldiers.
Before getting into this game I was aware that it was going to be very anime, even still I underestimated just how friggin' anime it is. But it works for me in a game like this. The characters fall into a lot of anime tropes but despite that they have really grown on me and I'm looking forward to the rest of the campaign (and then immediately playing through a NG+).
TL;DR go play Valkyria Chronicles. Only maybe not as intensely as I have been - one of my eyes went bloodshot before going to sleep last night/this morning.
Something in me may be kind of broken that I'm actually a little upset that Valkyria Chronicles' Steam cards are all pixely mush instead of nice art assets.
Super excited to find that throwing an extra 2 gb of ram at my Netbook has made it actually run games on it (as well as start up in less than 5 minutes!). I've got Pinball HD running, Grimrock, and even Farming Sim 2013 going on it with their detail levels turned down naturally. I'm thinking that maybe some turn based goodness would be fitting...does Blackguards have some flexible options for dialing down the detail/features to make it run on weaker PCs?
I'm looking forward to This War of Mine, but I find it odd that they haven't put up a price yet. I love games that do this, too: "Randomized world and characters every time you start a new game ".
Is it odd that I love State of Decay, I keep restarting it to maximize my characters (OMG! ITS SUCH A GREAT RPG), but I absolutely hate the color scheme with a fiery passion?
I'm not sure what you mean by restarting to maximize your characters. Like, if someone dies, you start over? Are you playing the base game, or Breakdown? Because if you love restarting, you'll love Breakdown.

It's possible I've mentioned this before but just in case... Breakdown is pure gaming gold. I am sort of a fan.
I don't remember there being anything wrong with the color scheme though.

I didn't realize what the perks did. Take the black guy you start the game with, I didn't realize that I could take him down a leveling path as a heavy melee weapons specialist, while Maya becomes a rifle(wo)man, and Ed becomes a luchadore (really hope the sequel comes with more clothing options).
