Kickstarter's new rules acknowledge that project failure can and does happen. They just tell creators to make sure that they keep their backers informed and if a project fails they should deliver what they are capable of delivering and be able to prove the money ran out and wasn't taken fraudulently.

Kickstarter is like an investment. If it is successful you get a video game as your return instead of cash. You should only back if you think you can trust the creator to finish the project. Too many people look at kickstarter as a preorder, and that should stop.

I think of it like an NPR pledge drive, complete with totebags for donating over the $10 level, except you're donating to a risky business venture instead of a stable industry, and they might not be able to actually afford to send you the totebag because they don't need to have a real business plan or anyone who knows how to budget projects involved.

Yeah the very first KS I got in on was Neal Stephenson's CLANG!, which ended up with at least a test release, but ultimately the project ran over budget, meaning many of the dev team at Subutai had to put in their own money, and so it failed in the end

every other Kickstarter I've gotten in on seems to be going smoothly, or has finished successfully

Kickstarter's firmer terms on project delivery only came about after the big failures like the Yogs poop and Clang, anyway. It was pretty much a direct response to those things.

nno it does not, and kickstarter has made it very clear that this is straight up a contract violation that will get you sued or jail time

I wasn't aware of any examples of people being sued or imprisoned. Have those threats ever actually been enforced yet?

Yeah, prior to these big expensive flops, Kickstarter's word on it was "They might be able to take legal action against you, maybe? I don't know."

I'm glad there is some legal recourse. Unfortunately it sounds like that lawsuit is being brought by the state of Washington, and only attempting to recoup the money of residents of Washington, so the rest of the backers are still fucked.

Yeah. Of course, the way the game is designed the harem route is best as a capper rather than an opener, so you messed up.

Would also say that, if you only do one, *Mute's route is much better than *Hyun-ae's.

Okay, is this about the route or the character?

Because Hyun-Ae is much less, well, a misogynistic basket case, and if I had to choose who I'm spending time with in a non-game context, it's probably not going to be Mute.

    But in the game
Hyun Ae is interested in what happened, sure, but she's not directly involved, and her bits aren't about it. Plus, when you're reading up on politics, her comments are mostly on how she doesn't understand any of it. *Mute, meanwhile, is right in the center. The whole thing has major emotional weight for her directly, leading to act 3's big twist, which packs a PUNCH. Hyun-ae... you just made some cake.

It's *Mute's story. Choice is if you want to see it with the subject, or with someone who has even less insight than you do.

    Edit:

    Also
    New *Mute is the best.

Back to the subject of Frog Fractions, as fun as it is, I prefer Candy Box in the "Well, this looks pretty mundane, I'm not sure what this is about OHHOLYSHIT" genre.

Though, my all time favorite indie game still remains Iji.

    Edit:

    Also
    New *Mute is the best.

    I mean

The game plays out in the text, not in the comments.
The big act 3 thing packs a wallop for sure, but it isn't as though Mute is a whole lot better than Hyun-ae with the commentary. It is a lot of "I can't believe that was me" "oh no wonder they went back to the more sensible and traditional ways." Ad naseum. It is Old Mute's story, not Current Mute's story, and she doesn't have a whole lot extra to offer either. She wasn't right in the center, her previous incarnation was.

I'll admit New Mute is pretty rad for sure, but I do not believe that Mute's path is "much" better than Hyun-ae's and they both come down to preference of the characters. I absolutely do think though that the harem path doesn't carry nearly the weight if you haven't at least done Mute's first. Though it'd be interesting to go into Mute's path expecting her suicide to somehow get prevented and then get quite the surprise.

I started replaying Iji a while ago, but stopped when I found out upgrading strength didn't make the kick do more damage. Being able to kick around the big enemies isn't worth it when it does shit all damage.

to be fair, Grim Fandango may as well be a new game for all intents and purposes to the majority of people who are seeing it get released. finicky hardware requirements and whatnot on the original release, and all that

I was given a free key for it because I was a backer but I disliked Shadowrun Returns so much I just gave it away

Later I learned that Dragonfall is supposed to basically be an entire revamp of the game, not just an additional campaign

    So I guess I should've given that a shot

I backed Banner Saga, Wasteland 2, Broken Age and Massive Chalice.

I've only actually beaten Broken Age. Barely played Wasteland 2, haven't started Banner Saga.

Now instead of backing stuff I'll just check on updates for successful kickstarters I'm interested in because I like seeing a little bit of the development process, then if it's still something I care about when it comes out I'll buy it. That's what I did with Shovel Knight.

Granted if Double Fine does another kickstarter I'd probably back that because I love Double Fine.

Yeah I think I'm over Kickstarter at this point and will only back projects if it's a creator I REALLY like or maybe someone here doing one.

Then again there's projects I backed over 2 years ago that still haven't delivered everything (mostly movies or games, though they're still doing status updates so I assume they're still underway) so who knows.
