Problem Pits

This is a rather odd predicament, and lately I've become a little worried.

About a year ago my armpits started getting really itchy. Insanely itchy. For around two weeks I'd find myself scratching desperately to get rid of the itching, and, after a while, it would work for a time. The itching would come back very often several times a day: the sensation would pop up a few dozen times per day. Well, one day the itching stopped, but not under the conditions I'd have like it to.

Basically, I got to the point where scratching actually hurt, so I stopped and drowned my pits in anti-itch powders and soaps, which did nothing but mildly supress the sensation. I can't remember exactly when it stopped, but eventually the itching went away.

The itchiness has begun to resurface lately, thankfully not in the same frequency and intensity as before. The last time this happened I ended up scratching to the point that the skin under my arms changed colour. Currently the skin looks to be a khaki colour -- the rest of me is white. Another thing that's been troubling me is that certain deodorants actually hurt to apply now.

I figure this is a problem that would require the insight of a dermatologist, but unfortunately mine is in high demand and making an appointment for some time soon is impossible. What I'd like to know is what would cause such intense itchiness, if the colour change indicates anything about the condition of my arms, what does it indicate, and is it reversible?

You are most likely allergic or sensitive to the aluminum in anti-perspirant. I am the same way, but I like the reassurance of an anti-perspirant rather than using just a deoderant. Look for AP that has low aluminum content. I use a Right Guard clear stick that has just 6.8% and it keep me itch free. Most AP has a 16-18% aluminum content...

Right Guard clear stick is the first deodorant that's harmed my armpits. Old Spice seems to be fine, but what I'm most worried about is why this is happening. Right Guard never bothered me before the itching incident.

I'm no expert, but I believe that allergies can develop where there was no problem before.

What detergent do you use to wash your clothes? Any special fabric softeners? They could be causing the itch, you may want to try switching those up.

Check the aluminum content. I bought like 10 sticks of this specific kind of Right Guard. Most has the much higher aluminum content.

I've been using the same detergent for years, and the itch is exclusive to my armpits. I dunno, I think if it was something like that the itch would be in more places than just my pits.

Your physician may well be able to prescribe something which'll solve this. Make an appointment as soon as is convenient. In the meantime it'd probably be best to avoid all deodorants as they may well serve only to exacerbate the problem.

I used to use gel deoderant by Right Guard and that stuff itched like crazy.

I switched to stick deoderant by.. i forgot who maybe it was Right Guard, too. And it was fine. I use Axe now, and no itch. But yeah, gel just owns me I think.

edit: oh both the ones that are fine are white sticks.

Someone else could be using your stick. Couple years back, brother was use my stick without me knowing, i was getting a little rash. When I found out and told him to stop (and got a brand new stick) itch went away.

It could be jock itch or eczema. Are you a darker colour tan or red in the spots that itch? Really, if you don't think it is an allergy, you should see a dermatologist.

Anti persp, especially gel kind, did that to me. So now I just use stick deodorant. Yey.
