Welcome to the Paladin Thread
I'm your host, Rorus Raz. You may remember me as bitching in such threads as "Druids: A pain in my bear ass" or "Chat Thread: Is Munkus really putting subliminal messaging in the OP?". Let me be your guide as I explain the class with as few bubblehearth jokes as possible.
What the fuck is a Paladin?
Paladins are either defenders of the Holy Light or abusers of the Holy Light as they keep an energy being trapped in the basement like a greasy nerd.
Paladins an spec to do a variety of things. Currently, they are best know for healing, but tanking is starting to get attention. Melee dps remains an underdog of sorts, with only the most dedicated players sticking with it despite the lack of support from other players.
The class is melee oriented with tough defenses. If you don't like being up close and personal, this is not the class for you.
Races
Four races can be Paladins:
Humans
Dwarves
Draenei*Blood Elves*
*Requires the Burning Crusade Expansion
While you should pick the race with animations and voices you like, power players will find Dwarves and Draenei currently superior to Humans. Humans do have a nice faction racial (factions are big in Outland) along with a nice spirit bonus if you are a heal nut. Nonetheless, Draenei are sweet for PvE (hit bonus for melee party members) and Dwarf stoneform is a neat combat trick for PvE and PvP.
If you are Horde, Blood Elf is your only option. Mana Tap and Arcane Torrent are pretty nice racials, though.
TalentsHoly: Holy is by far are most popular talent tree among the WoW community as a whole. Currently, we are crazy healers with a focus in powerful single-target heals and long-lasting mana. It is not perfect, however, as we lack the HoTs and effective emergency heals to handle multiple people taking damage. Holy is at the top of its game right now, being heavily populated in PvE and PvP areas of the game. Many say that Holy has no where to go but down from here, so when speccing Holy, do not expect too many future improvements without giving up something in return.
Protection (aka Prot): This is our tanking tree, dedicated to increasing our threat generation as well as our damage mitigation. Once a paladin gears up, they are the top tank for doing very fast instance runs for normal difficulty five-mans. Not all is rosy, however, as mitigation is becoming an issue for us in raids. But the future looks bright as upcoming patches promis buffs in some form. Protection has also generated a lot of interest as a leveling spec.
Retribution (aka Ret): The black sheep of talent trees, only truly dedicated paladins with thick skin should tread here. The Ret tree is suffering from a lack of purpose: nobody wants it in PvP OR PvE areas, as Holy is much better and Ret doesn't bring much to the table. If you have understanding friends or guildmates and put effort into the spec, Ret can offer multiple buffs to a group while providing modest-to-good dps. In PvP, Ret excels as a 1v1 spec thanks to solid burst with added control elements. it doesn't do as well in group scenarios, but knowing when to attack and when to hold back and support teammates goes a long way towards success. The fate of Ret is unknown, as developers have been mum on future changes beyond a vague burst damage nerf (which could apply to any talent tree).
Resources
To be added soon...certain sites are down at the moment, but expect guides on healing, tanking, etc.
Leveling Specs
We get asked a lot about leveling specs, so here is one for each:
HolyProtectionRetribution
These are just builds for soloing. You may group more or have different goals, but for leveling the option is to increase damage while reducing downtime.
PvE SpecsHolyProtectionRetribution
These aren't perfect, but simply exist to give you an idea of specs solely focused on PvE.
PvP SpecsHolyProtectionRetribution
Again, these are just some quick and dirty specs to show the difference between a PvP and PvE spec.
THIS ENDS THE PALADIN THREAD

So, yeah...paladins...aside from the Illumination nerf thing (which really isn't all that much; some mana back isn't all mana back, but it's still some mana back), what else can we expect to speculate forward to for the talent trees in 2.1?
You should add something along the lines how to equip a paladin. Everyone and their mom is always shocked when they get to 40 and have no idea what kind of gear they should pick. Hell, people get to 60 and they still have no clue what should a paladin wear.
XXXX of the Eagle.
Tanking Itemization buffs.
"Burst Damage" nerf which might be anything from Avenging Wrath to Holy Shock.
That's about it for announced things. Hopefully some Ret buffs are also coming.
 ...I picked XXXX of the Monkey...go Ret go!
They were too short to be seen when he asked for volunteers.
I have been waiting for over a year for some of this.
Some of the Eagle gear...and then "warrior gear lololololz". Before 50 or so the number of "pure" paladin pieces is close to non-existant.
Holy Shock vs Ardent Defender.
One means I have a very good all around heal/attack the other means I live a few minutes longer.
I am trying to make a dual role charater where I can help to tank if needed or help to off heal.
But if you're talking about leveling and five mans, it depends how you want to go. If you'd prefer to do a bit of better single target DPS, go for HS, if you want to murder entire villages at once go for prot.
Uh, you can go prot, but it will be slow. Prot kills things slowly. Prot fights lots of bad guys at once to kill them all pretty slowly together.
Prot wasn't that much slower than ret for me when I was leveling up, plus the survivability of protection is much higher.
6-30% damage reduction when below 35% HP. Uh, what?
Holy Shield giving 8 charges is huge.
Holy shock is better healing than it is damage. +1000-1500 healing added at the end of any of your long heals is nothing to scoff at.
700-800 damage, 1200 crit every 15 seconds is something to scoff at.
Well, holy shock owns rogues and whatnot, so I do use it for damage occasionally. I find myself instinctively using it as a heal, though, to top myself or others off.
Ardent Defender... looks like I don't want it evenmore than before.
And no min range on Avenger's Shield makes me happy.
Also, curoius how many people are 70 and still prot spec? Seems like all the pallies in my guild went back to holy spec at 70 for raiding and even PvP.
So it's going to work like the Troll racial, in that the closer we get to death, the more severe the buff is?
Lame. I don't want to have to have 200 HP left before I can rely on Ardent Defender to cut damage down to the point that I can block it entirely.
And Ardent Defender just listed the ranks weird. It's 6/12/18/24/30 percent damage reduction when below 35% HP.
hmmmm, this might be worth it for solo questing to 70. maybe. or for pvping.
well yeah, but it's wildly inefficient. And if I'm burning a DF, I'll more than likely be using it on my highest rank of HL.
Or at least, I would, if I got all 810 mana back now. Hooray
Oh, and Righteous set still sucks, but Tier 4/5 are pretty damn awesome now.
Someting I'd like to add:
On the PTR right now Vengance adds 10% (not 5) and stack up to 3 times. Edited to remove the now broken link to the picture =/
Ghalan - Tauren Druid
Ok, question. With Imp. Holy Shield and the nerf/tweak to Spiritual Attunement, should one spam it constantly in boss fights? Also Rorus, what changed in Tier 4 Prot? More Stamina???
Maths aren't good for Salty.
