eBay, maybe? If it's a proprietary adapter (I assume it's a transformer brick with wires coming out of both ends?), it's probably going to be a lot easier to get a secondhand one from someone whose monitor died than to jerry-rig a generic one.

The cable on my second display, a 15" ViewSonic VA520, was apparently rubbing up against my desk, got frayed, and is now quite dead. The monitor is still perfectly fine though, so I'd love to just get a new cable.

I called ViewSonic's parts department and they do sell them, but they're $75. Considering I could get a brand new monitor 4" bigger for just $50 more, there's no way in hell I'm paying $75 for a power cable. In fact, $20-$30 is probably my cap.

I thought the tech was going to be nice when she told me I could probably find one cheaper online, but then she offered "Google.com" as the place to get it. Yeah. Thanks.

So, H/A, it's your time to shine! What's the best credible place to get a cheap power adapter? You know, one that won't explode and burn my house down (I'm lucky the frayed one didn't).

    Radio Shack.

Looks like they're $22 plus $11 shipping on eBay. This still seems like a lot. Is there anything special about it, or is it just an AC/DC converter brick and a 12V connector?

It was a 12V, yeah. I'm not sure if there was anything special about the connector. Here's what it looks like:

So, inside it's more of like a planet saturn shape than a circle.

The "saturn" shape is simply the result of having flexible contacts in recessed grooves. So long as you get an adapter that has the same voltage, polarity, and doesn't under at all/over much the amperage/wattage and the same size hole (with or without grooves) and radial thickness, you're set.
