Incidentally, @mongrel idiot , I would guess we'd probably have some connection from traveling together, if not due to Dray's fascination with elves or history (something which we'd share, at least the latter), then the common profession as a soldier for our respective peoples.

I was thinking the same thing; since Dray is a High Elf, she'd know about the Bladesingers, and may have heard of Myriil's exploits at some point. I don't know what High Elves are like in Forgotten Realms; are there only a few cities of them, so we'd definitely be from the same place?

How about the two of them met at a tavern in Neverwinter in between travels and have been swapping stories for a week or two while they wait for something to turn up? Dray's short on cash--army severance pay doesn't go all that far--so she wouldn't have any problem taking the caravan-guard work.

Elves in Faerun used to span a rather large empire of sorts, having been the first of the mortal races to arrive on Faerun (or more specifically, Abeir-Toril, since I think they spread beyond Faerun itself). They created a number of memorable cities, all of them prefixed with "Myth" to referred to the Mythals that comprised their constructed. Myth Drannor is perhaps the most well-known, but there were many others. However, a number of wars were started when the Drow and Elves fought, eventually culminating in Corellon physically distinguishing the drow and banishing them to the underdark.

By 'modern' times, the elves were in continual decline, as most of the Mythal Cities fell to ruin or corruption. Within the last hundred years, the elves had mandated a Retreat of all elves to the isle of Evermeet, to leave Faerun to the increasing number of humans that now came to makeup the world around them. As such, the vast majority (90%) followed the command and congregated in Evermeet, while the rest tended to stay in Evereska, an elven city not far from the Anauroch desert.

You'd still find the more wilder elven subraces within the older forests, but high elves would overwhelmingly be either in Evermeet or Evereska. That's not to say some elves wouldn't be found in cities across the region, particularly places that were in good relations with the elves (Silverymoon for instance, or the Dalelands surrounding the revitalized Myth Drannor...which you'd probably find a lot of elves at, since they're actively rebuilding the place now that they finally have a new Coronal) Recently there'd been a bit of a return of elves to the world, as the Retreat was called to an end, but I believe the Spellplague upset everything.

Evereska was attacked and effectively destroyed by the released Phaeriim once the Shadovar returned to the world, and I don't know what the hell happened with regards to the Spellplague because 4e Faerunian 'canon' lore was dumb.

Dray's short on cash--army severance pay doesn't go all that far--so she wouldn't have any problem taking the caravan-guard work.

This definitely works too, since Myriil would have been wandering about the Sword Coast area/High Forest area once his mentor was attacked, so he'd be perfectly happy to follow her around swapping stories and finding work.

Hmm. Evermeet's closer to what I had in mind for her, I think, though a quick Google makes me wonder how she would have even gotten off the island, let alone all the way to the mainland. Perhaps just a hidden enclave of High Elves who never made the retreat, kept their heads down, and more or less avoided the rest of the world. Probably not super important.

  • Options
AegisAegis Fear My Dance Overshot Toronto, Landed in OttawaRegistered User regular
Evermeet traditionally maintains a number of portals to the mainland and their previous homes. But it's not super important, no, since there are scattered remnants that didn't follow the Retreat.

Okay, edited in Sigrid's history to my previous post.

Sigrid is from one of the barbarian tribes of the Frozenfar, but she doesn't roam there anymore. She would probably spend a lot of time in and around Neverwinter or Waterdeep, so I could see her falling in with Dray and Myriil pretty easily. And she would certainly be craving another shot at guarding a caravan, just to prove that she can do it.

FYI I am at work currently did not have time to build last night. If someone is not busy today and has the PHB, etc, it'd be super awesome if you'd like to help. I will be rolling a Cleric, fyi, haven't decided on a domain quite yet. Otherwise I will just stat it up this evening when I get home.

I'd like to think that everyone has either seen or heard Polk as he makes his rounds in Faerun. Whether it be one of his midnight street-sermons in the red light district, or perhaps his roadside proselytizing ("Have you heard the word of the Law Maker?"), or if he offered you a drink in a dockside bar ("Has your soul been purified beneath the gavel of the Oathkeeper?").

As for why he's going to Phandalin, Polk doesn't have any reason to be anywhere. So, he might as well be here.

War Domain is fantastic. It gives you heavy armor and martial weapons for one, which lets you hit things up front better and be safer (especially if your dex isn't great). Then later on the benefit that gives you +10 to hit on a roll is just incredible and later you can get some extra attacks (as a bonus action, equal to your wis/mod per day IIRC) which also helps immensely. I honestly think War Cleric is really good and allows a Cleric to easily fill a front line role in a party (while still bringing substantial healing and defensive magic as well).

I....I'd kind of like to keep it to PMs. And also more of a "hey what's this background say" or "what are the starting options for the different domains?" etc.

Less interested in specific recommendations, no offense.

Yeah there's a reason my tribe specializes in hunting dire wolves. Well two reasons, one of them being because that sounds rad as hell. The other being CR1 Wild Shape.

my ruling is that you can use your free action to switch weapons once or to free your hand to cast a spell. I'm personally not interested in making people forgo opportunity attacks for the sake of being nitpicky. warcaster allows you advantage and spell aoos also.

however, this also applies to monsters and npcs. they can switch weapons ad hoc too.

mearls is just a dm, he's not the rules guy for 5th. I don't agree with too many of his rulings, so if there's a question, just ask me.

as for casting in melee, it's not possible to have disadvantage for the caster on save spells. what I mean by this is if you cast sacred flame within 5 feet of an enemy, the target does not gain advantage on his save. however, you would roll with disadvantage for, say, firebolt.

    On the Road to Phandaline
    swordcoast_zps1eb805a5.png

The road to Phandalin from Neverwinter meanders south at a leasurely pace. The High Road, as it's called, plunges almost straight south towards Leilon. Your path cuts east, taking you closer to the Sword Mountain range. eventually you reach the triboar trail...

Any character can drive the wagon. it is being pulled by two oxen. there is enough room up front for a driver and one ad it iona person. none of you has a mount yet. in the back of the cart are a dozen sacks of flour, several casks of salt pork, two kegs of strong ale, about a dozen each of shovels, picks, and crowbars. There are 5 lanterns and a small barrel of oil.

Who is in the wagon, driving? what is your marching order?

Should we establish a rotation order for the people walking alongside the wagon? I assume that Myriil and Dray would swap driving every now and again, and the walkers would want to take a rest and ride every now and again. Or is that more detail than we really need?

Polk stalks the cart from left side, keeping an eye out for ambushes or debris. He also takes this as as oppurtunity to practice a sermon about the differences between Devas and Eladrin, and why Archons are better than both of them.

Looking over the character backstories, I could envision Okane knowing two of the other players ahead of time.

@denada If you're ever in a city, having a contact who's able to navigate the politics of the merchant guilds for you to sell your wares would prove invaluable, and I wouldn't even charge that high of a finder's fee and commission, on account of not wanting to be eaten or beaten.

@Carnarvon‌ I once went undercover as a priest for a job, to expose a reverend mother who was pimping out the vestal virgins. Although I never paid your sermons any heed before, I could tell your background wasn't strictly religious, and went to you for advice in infiltrating and sussing out the scandal at the temple.

Anyone else who might have met Okane previously would be someone who spent time in a large city, and needed to hire someone for odd jobs or connections as a middle man.

I'm guarding the caravan because I am a classic fifth man for hire, and heard about the job through my guild. I became enthused to join up after hearing Sigrid or Polk might have as well. I'm not just along as a bodyguard, though; the guild wants me to assess the town and mine, and report back what kinds of specialists would be most in demand in the area.

And finally, Geth roll 5#1d20+4 for Okane's five initiatives
