I always enjoy the lead up for war. The small things that basically lead to WWI and the shit it has led to for the last century.

It always seemed like a damn script.

In other shitty cat news our sixteen year old cranky dude cat seems to have had a stroke while we were at work. He is in less than ideal shape, but the vet has given us some cool drugs to get him high.

    Well, that was quick.

Just got a call for my referral to the specialist for the tooth removal. Going to do a consult in January and then schedule the removal then. Wife will be happy since it means I won't be running the risk of being incapacitated while we move. :P

I got a flu shot and now my arm hurts
    arm-flu

    thank you for your service

I'm terrified of needles but I had the flu two years ago and it was the worst
I would wade through a lake of needles to not have that happen again

our 7 week old daughter got the flu this past weekend and had to go to the ER

so yeah i really appreciate when people that don't really need to get the shot still do so

Yeah I've been badgering my roommate
it's really not that much trouble to do something responsible
it's free and about 4feet from our front door

One thing that still bothers me is why a change in graphics (that's really what the move from 2d to 3d represents) had to cause such a huge shift in gameplay. Doom and Duke3d are actually 3d games in terms of gameplay, but basically 2d in terms of graphics. The game play progression to a 3d game like Quake was not jarring. It was just the same type of game, using polygons instead of sprites. But mario 64 is a COMPLETELY different game from all prior Marios. Its a great game in its own right, but its not really a "mario" game in terms of gameplay to me, in the way that Quake remained an FPS in the vein of Doom and Duke3d.

Also, I really disagree with all the rose colored glasses allegations that get thrown around whenever someone says that old games are better than new games. If the game play changes from generation to generation and you preferred the old game play, it is not rose colored glasses to say that the old games were better. I think SMB3 is a better game than Mario 64. No question at all. I don't think that preferring 2d platforming over 3d platforming means I have rose colored glasses on. It just means that I prefer one type of game to another, and the existence of a "new" type of gameplay does not obsolete the old one.

A lot of people seem to think that older games are better for the exact reasons that I think newer games are better. Ability to save whenever (so I can actually leave and do RL stuff), no ridiculous punishing difficulty for no apparent reason, more obvious or accessible rules or mechanics, etc. This doesn't necessarily mean they have rose-colored glasses on though, but I can see why people think that. (And this may be not quite what you're getting at either with the genres)

This is from the RPG thread (which people should post in!)
My view is that the greatest thing about RPGs is that they give you the opportunity to create a character who has a real existence in his or her world, as opposed to the pure surrogate for the player featured in a game like Halo or Mario. To this end, I prefer games that are stat dependant because when the PC's actions suceed or fail based on his stats that makes him seem like a real part of his world, as opposed to an action RPG like Oblivion where the most important determinant in the success of failure if the character is the Player's skill with the controller (so that a highly skilled archer can miss all the time if the player is bad at aiming, for example). For me, nothing breaks immersion like hwving a character who is supposed to be good at something based on state fail a lot or succeed all the time at things he is bad at based on his stats, in each case because I am good (or bad) with a controller or mouse. I also have a very strong preference for games with a stronger narrative, mostly because I think that including choices with consequences adds immeasurably to the gameplay, and without a strong narrative, it is hard to create meaningful choices. I am very opposed to full voice acting because of the neccesary reduction in dialog choices that it brings.

It's not inevitable but it seems like trying to pull at threads to fix it would be hard. The only thing I can ponder is Marie Antoinette not dying and raising her son to not be a total shit might prevent the formation of Germany but who knows what the hell outcome comes out of that. Maybe it doesn't prevent German from forming or we get The 30 Years War Part II.
