I would say to keep checking often (I was doing it every 15-30 min while at work) ... I started out with a hotel at Intercontinental (1 mile away), then a Renaissance (.5 mile away) came up so I grabbed that. Then a Seaport (.4 miles away) came up which I switched to. Then finally a Westin (connected to BCEC) showed up and I jumped all over it. It's a 1 bed but since it is just me and my gf that is not a big deal, we just won't be sharing a room this year with a stranger. This hotel switching all took place in a 48 hour period, so be on your lookout for the rooms to come available.

    My best advice:
    • Check Often (every 15-30 minutes)
    • Be flexible in your arrival and departure if possible. If you can move your travels to only need a hotel for Friday and Saturday it is a lot easier to find rooms.

Guys, I'm releasing 3 Thursday - Monday reservations for the Seaport today. They're all single bed, and I'm going to dump them at 2 PM EST so you guys have a good window to look for them.

I stayed at the Seaport before and am staying again based upon that excellent experience and the location which I actually prefer over the Westin's. I can't imagine a stay in the Westin would be much better, other than if the weather was really bad. The walk is only a few minutes, it's literally across the short bridge from the BCEC, closer to the BCEC entrance than the BCEC is long. LOL So it's awesome that rooms keep opening up there for those who know the Seaport is a great find.

The Seaport is the superior hotel, no doubt. We have someone in our group with medical needs, and it's just easier for us to stay in the Westin.

  • klzklz Registered User regular
The Westin is connected but the rooms are tiny. The Seaport was by far much better and the walk wasn't too bad at all, plus near the restaurants over by the shore. The Renaissance is pricier and has small rooms, but is decent, though it does not have its own parking lot (which I found odd when arriving and then leaving and trying to get stuff in and out of the car).

    Hey all,

Just so everyone knows the Renaissance has opening for basically all of PAX and then some.

There's a few Fri-Sun rooms open at the Seaport at the moment as well. Get em while they're hot!

I prefer the Westin mostly because I like the shortest travel possible to my hotel based on that I don't spend anytime in it except to sleep and shower. Same reason I book the main hotel at most conventions I go to like Magfest, Anime Central, etc.

@dalaamprince I managed to snag Sat and Sunday at westin but I had to fight with the system to let it even let me click the westin.

Whats the method for trying to add a friday? Just visit the reservation page every once in awhile and see if I can add it? In previous years they had a single page that'd show the breakdowns on all hotels.

  • dalaamprincedalaamprince Registered User regular
I think you'll need to book it as a separate reservation. Then maybe someone at OnPeak or the Westin can combine them.

  • craiolacraiola MARegistered User regular
I just tried to combine my 3 separate reservations and onpeak said they couldn't do it without releasing the rooms. The woman on the line mentioned that I could probably combine them by talking to the hotel once the reservations were sent over by onpeak.

Will be releasing Thurs-Sat and Thurs-Sun stays at the Westin once a Thurs night at the Seaport becomes available. If you want, let me know and I can PM you when I drop 'em.

FINALLY just got Friday & Saturday at the Westin. I will likely be releasing my Seaport reservation -- but before I do, what makes the Seaport preferable to the Westin? Does anything really top the convenience and proximity?

  • AlextheGreat77AlextheGreat77 Registered User regular
Kept the Westin reservation and dropped a Thurs/Fri/Sat at the Seaport, for anyone who wants it.

The Seaport is quite close to the Silver line station. As far as layout of the city, i would prefer to stay at Seaport as theres a dunkin donuts and 7/11 across the street (north)

This year i'm split between Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers and Westin Waterfront

I try not to talk too highly of hotels I love so that they don't get more popular, but I don't think it really matters for East since the 3 close ones are in such high demand.

What puts the Seaport truly above, imo, is the staff. My experiences with them have all been actually terrific. Not just average or "yeah they're hotel staff" but really great. The whole thing when you are taking a hotel or restaurant or other service industry survey and it asks "did they make you feel like they were actually for real happy you were there?" The Seaport Hotel is one of the only places where I have emphatically felt that was the case from start to end of my stay. Not being placated, not being talked down to or around or over, but just for real enthusiastic staff that want nothing more (outwardly anyhow) than for your stay to be as good as it can possibly be.

Post renovation the rooms are really great too, and that's all well and good, but I would stay at a hotel with much poorer rooms if they had staff like that.

Word. Thanks, that's helpful. I live in the Boston area, so it's not worth paying for a hotel unless I'm staying REALLY close (the big 3), and this is the first year I'll achieve that. I'm looking forward to not having to drive in and deal with traffic, parking, walking, weather, etc., so that's why the Westin is really drawing me in. Still undecided though!

The "commute" time difference, honestly, between your Westin room and your Seaport room, is probably about 3 - 5 min...and the fact you have to actually see the sun on your walk from the Seaport. You walk out of the Seaport, down a mostly pedestrian bridge, and across a street to get into the BCEC.
You also are MUCH closer to some of the nightlife and restaurants directly on the shore. No Name, Whiskey Priest, Harpoon Brewery, Legal Seafood Test, Lucky's Lounge....some PaxEast favorite haunts (and others) are all REALLY close to the Seaport, which makes "after Paxing" quite nice.
Seaport also has a 7-11 and a DD across the street...although after the reno, they have their own little coffee shop (and the coffee is quite good) down on the lobby level.
I said in a previous post...I'd prefer the Seaport, by a country mile, as a HOTEL. I've stayed at both. While the convenience of the Westin is nice....I've switched over to the Seaport for good. The rooms (post reno), the service, the amenities (the wifi really is superior, by a LOT), the facilities on site....for ME, it trumps the ONE thing the Westin has, which is proximity.

Yeah that's the other thing, the /only/ thing the Westin has going for it is the attachment. That is a BIG thing, but it's only ONE thing and it's not anything to do with its quality as a hotel.

  • craiolacraiola MARegistered User regular
I can agree with the above posters in that the seaport is definitely the best hotel. I'd be staying there this year over the westin if I wasn't cosplaying and it wasn't early March

The Rennaissance was very nice. I stayed there last year, but it is also a high class hotel, so I wouldn't recommend eating there unless you are ok with paying an arm and a leg for a bagel in the morning. Other than price, I thought it was pretty nice though.

  • vttymvttym Ardent Gamer Northern NJRegistered User regular
One other thing that I really like about the Seaport is that it's a no-tip hotel. Not that I don't like showing appreciation for good service, I just never have cash on me so it always becomes awkward. Having the service fees included in my stay (was $3 a night last year) takes all that out of the equation.

Looking forward to seeing how the Renaissance compares, since I couldn't get Seaport this year, unfortunately.

  • klzklz Registered User regular
I've got the Ren for now (hoping to get a 2 bed Th-Sun Seaport, but I'm not holding my breath). I'd grab the Seaport just because of what was mentioned above: proximity to food and other places, especially in the morning and dinner, plus not much farther out than the Westin. Excellent service and comfortable setup - and parking was tight but easier than the Westin and not across the street like the Ren.

    Hey I have a question.

I have two reservations at the Seaport.

    1) Thurs-Friday
    2) Friday-Sunday

Does anyone know if I have to check out of the Seaport on Friday to just check back in?

    Thanks!

No. I'm pretty sure you can just call onpeak to combine your reservation. People do it all the time.

I think you actually need to do this with the hotel directly once OnPeak sends them the reservation info.

I've done this at other hotels. You just tell them to combine the reservations once you get onsite. If the reservations are in different names then you've got a bit of an issue though

Yup, I'm with you on this. I do really like the Westin though. At least the Westin has a Dunkin Donuts and a Jimmy Johns across the street now, so there are more affordable food options nearby.

  • KaronethKaroneth Elder Scrolling Online Co-Host Lakehurst, NJRegistered User regular
I agree with the above posters. The staff at the Seaport are excellent and it is super close to PAX and even closer to the restaurants. I will be attempting to stay there for all of my future PAX Easts unless a more compelling hotel opens up nearby, but it will be hard to beat the Seaport. The Westin's one advantage of the skybridge would be nice if I was mobility impaired. But I enjoy the short outside walk to the Seaport, which is just far enough from PAX to be away from the hustle and bustle to a degree when you need to get away from it.

  • zerzhulzerzhul Registered User, Moderator mod
of course now that we've all gushed about the seaport staff we'll have a bad year >.< haha. Here's hoping that's not the case!

I was pretty happy with the Intercontinental last year, so I'm glad I was able to grab a room there. I prefer the food options at the Faneuil Hall area, so being closer to that is good enough for me.
