Bethesda buys Fallout IP, Interplay becomes licensee

This is the link:
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/12/great-geiger-bethesda-buys-fallout-ip/

So now Bethesda owns the license instead of being a licensee. At the very least, this means the IP is no longer held by a dead company. I'm not sure exactly what else it means, but I hope it's a sign that Bethesda is very serious about Fallout 3 and future Fallout-related projects.

Now they need to buy some other dead licenses, like Wing Commander and X-Com.

Yeah, Bethesda can start buying up old properties when they actually start making games I like... Sorry, Elder Scrolls just doesnt do it for me, and leaves me worried of whether Ill like Fallout 3 or not.

Wait, how exactly will this make it worse? Interplay in its current state probably wasn't going to be having any say in how the game was made.

Bethesda just owns the IP now. Nothing has changed.

Great, so all the dungeons will be exactly the same, and the monsters will level up with me, and it'll run like shit!

Yeah, I'd rather Bethesda not have the IP...

But maybe it's better than Interplay having it.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has really given me hope for Fallout 3. To me, it is proof that a first-person Fallout 3 could actually work. S.T.A.L.K.E.R + SPECIAL + more melee weapons + more sneaking + diplomacy options would be a kickass Fallout 3, and it really seems like something Bethesda could make. And it would probably piss off the NMA crowd, which I think is always an added bonus.

They also seem to assume that the Gamebryo engine that they used to make Oblivion can only do Elder Scrolls games.

The engine has been used for more than first-person free-roaming RPGs. It's even been used in top-down isometric games before.

Pirates of the Carribean and Call of Cthulhu aren't exactly reassuring, though.

They're not a big company and they publish themselves so I guess it's the equivalent of occasionally producing a porno in order to fund your avant garde art movie.

They also did a recent batch of Star Trek games too which some people seem to have enjoyed, but appears to have had a very niche appeal.

I'd be sad to see anything other then isometric turn-based combat; keep it an RPG and not an action-it-up. However, we don't really see any adventure-rpg-sci-fi-fps-games out there. It could prove to be a genre-buster and revive the IP for a whole new generation.

I'd rather see the former then the latter, but I takes what I can gets.

Look closer at the Dark Brotherhood quests. Now look further back and look at the blasted wasteland they created for Morrowind. Now mix the two in your mind. The resulting hybrid should resemble something close to Fallout 1 in atmosphere. While Fallout 2 may have been loose and colorful, Fallout 1 had a darker and more somber character to it that Bethesda already did in Morrowind.

I'd hardly call Morrowind or Oblivion somber. Saying the game is somber or moody would be giving it credit for personality is doesn't have.

The greatest failure of the game is how laid back and peaceful everything seems. I felt relaxed playing it, but never excited. That's something they need to have for Fallout.
