[PA Comic] Friday, November 14, 2014 - A Ring And A Prayer
The main problem is that Big Red Button, the company who developed the game, hadn't originally intended Sonic Boom to be a Sonic game; apparently it was going to be a completely different game but no one wanted their idea so they settled for Sega who made them slap Sonic and co. in. Not to mention that the staff is made up of ex-Naughty Dog members, where typically "'ex' something" does not imply something good. It plays like a bug-riddled PS2 platformer of your choice; it was so bad that the original dev lead left the company some months before the game was finished because he knew that the shitstorm was going to be on his head.
So, earlier this week, I decided to pick up Sonic Boom for the Wii U to see what it was like. It had some bugs, but nothing that seemed to disrupt my gameplay. I actually kind of enjoyed the Jak and Daxter-esque gameplay and the tongue-in-cheek dialogue. By the end, I proudly walked away, having enjoyed my time with the game, and went to see what others had to say about it.

Dear God.

Everyone hates it. Everyone! I can't even find a lot of Sonic fans who like it. I'm all alone in this world... Hold me... Somebody, hold me.

It's fine if you like it, that's your opinion. People can like bad games. You liking it does not, in fact, make it a good game, however.
But then we wouldn't have got Unleashed, Colours and Generations - 2.5 great games with a solid 20 minutes of gameplay between them :P
I keed, but Modern Sonic gameplay is awesome while it lasts. And unfortunately therein lies the problem, because it takes a massive amount of time n' effort to create a very short experience. Even a huge nerd like me that'll play em over and over to get S-ranks and 100% completion thinks they're too short. And then comes the padding and the filler...

That's a great sentiment.

Such true words.
I, myself, loved the shit out of the original Digimon World. Imagine my surprise when I found it mostly got reviews in the 5/10 range.
In retrospect, yeah, it's probably a not very good game. Didn't change the fact that I personally loved it way back when. Heck, just thinking about it makes me wonder if any similar monster raising games have been released that are actually worth checking out.
On another note, the Digimon World sequels were absolute, unrepentant crap. Sure, the combat in the original wasn't amazing, but at least it helped capture that sorta "kid with his Digimon pal" feel, not to mention the hefty (borderline Zelda-esque) amount of side activities one could participate in. The sequels? Side shit stripped, and you're left with a super-linear game and the most barebones generic J-RPG combat the world has ever seen. You're not paling around with your best buddy the weird little lizard guy, instead you aimless wander a void and then when you fight like, four of your buddies pop out of nowhere at once to fight.
And it was terrible, just fucking terrible. They took everything that actually made me enjoy their first game, stripped it out, and replaced it with what I'll deem the most shitty of all possible opposites to that.
Then again, that entire franchise has been equally full of fail since, what? 2001? To be a complete douche and quote myself (as I once said to a couple of younger folks at Comicpalooza last year): "Digimon was sort of like Pokemon, only better. And then much worse."
Now that The Gentleman Adventurer has saved X-COM, Digimon is at the top of my list for franchises that need someone to resurrect. It'll never happen.
I didn't even know which Sonic game this comic referenced specifically, but I did know that this should have been done yesterday. If you love something, set it free. Maybe one day it'll return and be something beautiful, but at the last it won't be a terrible shell of its former self.
If we're talking about loving bad games, well, I liked Sonic and the Black Knight. Okay, so the gameplay wasn't the best, especially with bosses, and the story was cheesy as fuck, but it was pretty fun, at least for me.
Look. We need to let Sonic go. He's like a beloved pet that has long since grown horrifyingly ill. His life is naught but pain, humiliation, and regret.
Let Sonic go. Just... let him go. He deserves peace.

But damn is Sonic Boom bad.
Sonic and the Black Knight's biggest problem was that it actively tried to hide that it was kind of a decent game. There's a ton of content in it, but most of it is locked behind other optional levels, making it look at first glance like it's incredibly barebones. There's the other characters and the creation of weapons for them, which the game doesn't even let you know about until fairly late in the story. There's even a fake ending with credits, so that maybe you'll just give up there and not even reach any of the good stuff.
I may upset some people for saying this, but at this point, I think there's only one course of action to keep Sonic alive. I don't think there's any specific gameplay that defines Sonic games, nor are there any personality traits other than a vague 90s "attitude" that could identify the character. Everything his modern games are known for the negative stuff--bad camera angles, glitchy levels, weird pacing, annoying characters, and the creators' inability to decide whether Sonic is supposed to be for furries. As much as it seems like shilling out, maybe the best treatment would be to take the character image--and image alone--and do what they did for another mostly irrelevant legacy character--put him in Skylanders.

Sadly this happened to TSR, with @Bobkins Flymo pulling the trigger. He is no more.
(Well, a mod pulling the trigger, I'm not sure which).

Actually you'd know if he'd lived through that, because instead of a blue splatter, there'd be rings flying everywhere.

I definitely want to hear the DLC discussion behind it.

Please redraw this immediately.
Came in to make this joke. Left satisfied.
Always doubletap.
It's that bad, is it?

Guns blam or bang*. Bombs boom.
It's pretty standard onomatopoeia.
*Unless they're really big guns.
