Hey thread, I used this resource to build my pc a couple of years ago and I need some advice as it's time for a tune up. I have a 250 gb ssd that is pretty much just windows 7 and I don't know what I've done, but the thing is completely full. Completely. I run everything off of the 2 tb E drive at the moment and it is still stuffed to the gills. So, what do I do? I've got a deal lined up on a new ssd for a good price, 500 gb and I can just transfer windows over to it. Or is it worth it to clean out the old ssd and save my cash? Is the ssd even worth it as a boot drive considering I use this computer as a dvr and never really turn it off? I'm never going to see the quicker boot times, is the gaming performance worth it?
You don't know what's on it and it's full? Uhh...
I would suggest figuring out how to clean up your drive before you buy a new one. Start with windirstat: https://windirstat.info
I have a 250GB SSD and a 500GB SSD on my system. If I pooled together everything on my system, I think it would take up about 80GB. And a large portion of that is probably my WoW install/folder. Unless you have a "Downloads" folder that you never clean out, I don't know what could be doing it.
+1 for Windirstat
Running it now and it's not done yet, but windows is already showing over 212gb and growing.
as in the C:\Windows is over 200gb? Because that is not normal it should only be somewhere in the 20-40gb range. But 220gb means you got some sort of temp folder or something full of junk.

That's exactly what the problem was. When I expanded the field, almost all of it was in a temp folder. How can I prevent this from happening again? What causes files to store in the temp folder like an appendix about to burst?
I just installed a new secondary 3TB drive and I'm not really sure how to format it. I pulled up the Disk Manager and I get this:
Do I want it as 1 big drive? Is there an advantage to having it as 2 drives?
I think I'm probably okay with having it as 2 drives because I want about 2 TBs for Steam files and 1 for backing up pictures and music and videos. What's the best way to go about this? Do I just right-click on the allocation and say New Simple Volume and leave it at 2048 GBs?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
EDIT: I ended up going with a GPT partition instead of MBR which lets me use the whole space and gives me more flexibility if I need more room for files or games.
I grabbed a new monitor today, its a nice 24" Asus with a 1ms response time, but I feel like the color is all washed out. I tried messing with things and I even ran that windows tool that is built into 7. Things just don't seem as...colorful so far on this thing. Is there an auto feature I'm missing or a good site to help calibrate things?

Are you going from an IPS display to a TN display? IPS panels have more vivid colors and great viewing angles but the tradeoff for that is in slower response time and such, which is where TN screens still hold the edge despite being older technology.

Couldn't you system link that folder over to another hard drive? I'm pretty sure that's what I did on my 120GB SSD and I haven't had any issues (I also moved Downloads, Documents, Music, Video, and some other folder over). Doing so let me fit Windows, BF 4, Civ V and I think Shogun 2 on it.
BTW, just a little head's up for folks looking for a g-sync monitor. Newegg has a $70 discount code for the next 24 hours for the Acer 27" 1920x1080 monitor.

Yeah, I have downloads and documents symlinked from my storage drive. I leave the temp folder on the SSD though because it's supposed to only be used for... well temporary files, and having them on the SSD is helpful

Assuming I built a computer in about 2013 with medium level parts, about how long will I have to wait until I can get at least a 75% general increase in game performance getting, once again, mid level parts?
Right now I have a 3.4 Intel quad core, a 760 GTX, an SSD and 8gbs of whatever RAM made the most use out of my other specs.
It is hard to say - it depends on what kind of games you play, and whether there are any big jumps in the field. Also it depends on how you define "75% general increase in game performance."
But I would say in general right now you can go 3 years with a mid-range build and still be playing new stuff at acceptable framerates. You might not get all the bells and whistles on, but you can still play at 1080p.
I should mention that my monitor is 1440p, so.. yeah. My thing is I don't need stuff like maxed out AA/AF or whatever, but 60 FPS (if the game does it) is very important to me. Currently there are several games that don't seem to run at a consistent 60 FPS for me.
A bit of a tech question, although this should probably go in the Windows thread (too?). My Downloads folder on my main SSD drive "re-indexes" every time I open it. Or, whatever the green progress bar is in Windows Explorer. None of my other folders / drives have this issue. I mean, it's nitpicky, but it's mildly frustrating that I can't pop into the folder right away when I'm looking for something.
I've tried indexing it manually, and every time I do that, Windows says "lol already indexed lol"
I'm mostly concerned about the mobo and that RAM in a Define R4 case. I will probably overclock eventually but I'll start with stock since it's my first build.
The RAM is on sale at a store where I have a $50 gift card so that's why I opted for that one.
@Atlas in Chains what was the name/location of the temp folder with all the files? What files are in there?
Uh...I deleted it as soon as I found it, so I don't remember. It's like finding 20 bucks in the couch cushions. You gotta buy scratchers fast, you might get hit by a bus and miss your chance.

ASRock and GSkill are both quality companies. I've used GSkill RAM for my past 3 builds, spanning about 8 years. ASRock 1150 boards have been performing very well. When you decide to OC, it may be worth getting an aftermarket CPU cooler, depending on how far you plan to push the chip.

Probably the folder is set up to think that you're trying to use it for a specific file type instead of just general stuff. Go to the folder properties and the last tab on the right, Customize. Then change the drop down to what you want the folder optimized for, in this case, "general items."

Those items will fit fine. R4 is a great case, easy cable management, you will love it.

I've just heard weird things that I wouldn't be able to imagine with tall RAM and proper cooling. I don't think it would be an issue in this build but I just wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the RAM and mobo while they are on sale right now and then grab the CPU next time it's on sale. No hurry as my current Core2Duo 3.6GHz seems to be handling things like Shadows of Mordor just fine.

Just watched a YouTube video from NCIX indicating there may be some new GPU releases coming in March... I tried to check out their source website, but I can't read Swedish.

anyone familiar with Asus' AI Tweaker on their recent mobo BIOSes? i'm overclocking my 5820k system, and i think i'm getting a stable OC at 4.3Ghz - 1.175Vcore. i'd like to have the board use the automatic downstep/speedstep though so that the CPU is not running at that high speed all the time. when i have the mobo set to defaults, the CPU clocks up and down (and uses less/more power) accordingly. when i manually set the multiplier and Vcore though, the chip won't downclock when idle. any ideas?

I have the Define R4 with G.Skill Ripjaw RAM in slot 1, right under my Hyper 212 EVO which has a Corsair SP120 fan on it. It's a pretty snug fit, on that cooler specifically you can move the mounting rails up or down on the radiator, so I moved my fan up about 1mm to accommodate that tall RAM without any contact.

I had to do the same thing, so now the bottom 1/4" or so of the radiator isn't being blown on by a fan, but I think the overall loss in efficiency is small enough it's not a worry. (this may also be possible with other ones, but the 212 definitely lets you do this)

cooling has been pretty solid, not going above 60C on load using Prime95.
Probably CStates are on with the default. Try turning them on or:
Go into Power Options->Advanced Options->Processor power management->minimum processor state and set it to not 100% in your power plan.
huh, and now i'm reading a lot of people recommending to stay away from Prime95 for stress testing Haswell and Haswell-E. hrmm.
can anyone verify if this is true? or recommend other stress tests i should be using?
I use IntelBurnTest, it puts more stress on a cpu faster so you don't have to run for hours like you do with Prime95. And it also gives you results of the math it does, so you can compare each result pass and if they don't match exactly then you know you have instability in the CPU.

No clue what could be filling it up that much. Windows update stuff or system restore points?
for updates check the SoftwareDistribution folder in the Windows folder
you can safely just trash the whole thing just stop the Windows Update service first
