picked up the hybrid cooler for my titan X, plus a backplate. when they come in i should be able to get to 1500/8000 24/7.
yes, i'm still at 1080p.
i'm pretty sure i'd have trouble driving a 34 inch 21:9 monitor, but that's what i'm eventually aiming for. pascal might come out first, in which case i'll return the titan X and get that.

Evga 970 GTX SSC installed and running Heaven Benchmark... It's awesome to be benchmarking and running 70-75c and not being able to tell that that video card fan is running on this card. My benchmark numbers look good enough to know the card is OK. I don't even think I'm going mess at all with overclocking it as its kinda overkill at 1080p.
Also finally threw in a 480GB Crucial SSD I'd had sitting here forever. I need to setup steam to use it now.
This is the first time I'd cracked this Fractal Design Arc Midi case of mine open since building it 3 years ago. Call me impressed. I blew out some dust but nothing too crazy.
I was thinking about the Titan x. How's it been treating you?
it's been amazing, but unless you're running at 4K res, you should totally go for the 980 ti. it's 97% of the Titan X's performance for 350 bucks less.
i got the titan X to ride out until Big Pascal, and i'm damned sure it'll max everything until then. I'm happy with my purchase, as it was the best option at the time. it also happened to be released at a rare moment where it wasn't a painful thing to purchase. sort of a perfect storm.
now, however, the 980 ti is the obvious choice. things may change if games start to use more than 6 GB of VRAM, but i don't know how likely that will be.

I've been thinking about building a media centre PC - hook it up to the TV and use it to streaming, playing/ripping DVDs, storing my media collection etc.
I got a gaming computer a year or so ago (I didn't assemble it myself I must admit), and it was somewhat more obvious what I should be looking for - decent processor, gaming card and so on. It's a bit more unclear about what I should be looking for in a media centre PC.
For a media centre PC what kind of specs would you guys recommend?
I'm thinking about assembling this one myself, so I imagine I'll be back here before too long!

If your not interested in also gaming on it, then usually the best solution isn't a pc. It's a nas for your media storage, and then a streaming box like the wd tv live or a raspberry pi to play it back.
In case this was a surprise to anyone else and they care: It seems Microsoft has pushed out a little system tray update to reserve your free copy of Windows 10. I now have a somewhat kind of almost annoying little Window's logo sitting there taunting me now.

Yes and no. That's certainly the cheapest option, but streaming (even locally) isn't always the highest quality. Unless you have a very well curated media catalog (meaning you only have file formats that are compatible with all of your players, so probably something like mp4) then your NAS will have to do some on the fly transcoding and the cpu's for NAS boxes aren't really built to handle that well. Also you typically won't have as much room for customization or an easy ability to open up a browser and just go to abc.com or comcast's websites for those instances when you can't get a show some other way.
So it sort of depends on what you want to do. If you mostly just stream netflix/hulu plus/amazon on demand, and all of your media files are mp4's then yeah something like an apple tv is the way to go. Live/recorded TV, built in dvd support, customization, lots of file types like mkv, and browser access are all reasons to go for an actual HTPC build.
Typically the first step for an HTPC build is deciding on your case. Most people will have weird conditions because the want it to fit in an entertainment center (which is designed with skinny dvd players/cable boxes in mind) and look nice. Personally I'm a fan of the silverstone cases, with something from the grandia or milo series.
The you'll probably want to go with a decent AMD apu for both your cpu/gpu needs, some combo of an ssd for the OS/some storage and a HDD for more storage, and fill out the rest with whatever suits your fancy. This would be a good build for around $600, with no OS. Optional changes would be getting a bigger SSD (say 500GB) for more programs and what not, but most media like movies don't really benefit from being on an SSD, so I've found 120GB to be more than enough. You can also drop the bluray player down to a normal dvd optical drive if you don't plan on ripping any blurays. Also bluray playback straight from the disc will probably require additional paid software around $50.
Anyways those are my random thoughts for the moment.

So now that the 980 Ti is out, I start my long winter hibernation for Nvidia's next architecture, which is what will replace my 980.
God damn finally, I've been waiting on the 980TI to replace my aging 670s. This winter's system rejiggering will involve installing the 980 and swapping my game drive out for an SSD. Depending on pricing and availability, I also want to dump my triple screen setup in favor of one big screen with a small auxiliary. I dunno if I'm gonna go all 4k crazy though.
In case this was a surprise to anyone else and they care: It seems Microsoft has pushed out a little system tray update to reserve your free copy of Windows 10. I now have a somewhat kind of almost annoying little Window's logo sitting there taunting me now.

The least they could do is make it go away when you reserve.
EDIT: It looks like you can hide it like any other system tray icon using the system tray configuration.

Go Gsync on main and use a leftover screen as the aux. Don't go 4k, unless you get one that halves to 1080 correctly without extra processing. I dunno abut windows 10 but all other versions of windows don't even do 4k correctly in desktop.

Also 1440p. With a 980 Ti, there is no reason not to get a 1440p monitor at this point. G-Sync 1440p screens are slowly starting to come in to the reasonable price range.
Are there any examples of a good, solid 1440p monitor? I don't need anything too fancy, but I have analysis paralysis on this one.
With or without G-Sync? If you want one with G-Sync, maybe hold off until the new wave of ASUS monitors hit the market. Apparently they've got a 27" 1440p 144Hz IPS G-Sync screen coming pretty soon.

Honestly as much as I like G-Sync, I think spending your money on 144hz refresh instead is a better bet. I wouldn't give up G-Sync now that I have it, but in an alternate world, I might have spent a bit less cash and just gone with a 27" 1440p 144hz IPS panel instead.
I think I'll probably go without. Better to never see it and never miss it.
I'll mimic Gnome here and say look for a well reviewed 120/144ghz IPS in whatever size you want and get that. Set your desktop to 120 if you do tho, otherwise your video card won't clock down.

Is that a thing? I've got mine set to 144, I've never noticed an issue...
Between you and me, Peggy, I smoked this Juul and it did UNTHINKABLE things to my mind and body...
It's not going to cause any problems, it's just going to draw more power. If you bring up some GPU monitoring software you'll see your video card clock down to a very minimal speed, unless your refresh is at 144.

Interesting! I'll give it a shot and watch what the clocks do. Thanks for the tip!

This week I moved to a new house, and we don't have our router in a good spot yet so I'm using a USB wifi adapter from awhile back (802.11g, haha).
Now I have this irritating issue where ALL of my USB ports seem to disconnect/reconnect. It happens pretty randomly. I've changed my Power Settings, gone into device manager and turned off any of the sleep options for USB controllers, I've tried relocating and even disconnecting the USB wifi adapter. Problem still persists.
Any guesses? The only thing I can fathom is that something got pinched/rattled in the move (it was like a 40 minute drive in the front seat of my car).

Does this happen just with the wifi adpater or everything? If it's just the adapter could check for updated drivers.

I took out the wifi adapter and it persists. I've tried changing it to different USB slots and it persists. No idea what went wrong. I'm running out of before/after variables...the only other things I can think of are that I haven't hooked up my speakers yet and I often have my TV hooked up via a DVI/HDMI adapter for some sweet Witcher 3 gaming.

Yeah, I was eyeballing that but it'd be kinda rad to get something in the 30" range. My general plan involves a high quality, big, single monitor, a second recycled auxiliary screen, and then an Oculus for sim silliness.
On a related note, I may have a triple screen stand and two lower end 24" Ben Q screens available later this year.

980 has taken a price drop with it as well. This should drive down the price of the top end line of nvidia cards.
If you didn't want to play/rip DVDs, you could do everything else with a RaspberryPi. Look into something like the Intel NUC as an option(?).

It's a known Windows issue. When running the desktop at 144mhz, the WDM drivers don't allow the card to go in to a low power state.
You might need to adjust the voltage selector switch on the PSU to 110v.
that and getting a cord that fits into NA sockets, but those are really easy to get.
Don't worry if your psu doesn't have a 220/110 switch, that just means it will automatically handle either.
