Wavebird on PC? Apparently No. But lets all use console controllers on computers!

I was browsing some sites, and I saw this for sale:

http://www.knightdiscounts.com/gamecubeusbconverter3.jpg

I've been playing quite a few basic sidescrolling freebie games recently, and the crappy arrow keys on my laptop keyboard are pretty uncomfortable, so I'm looking into getting an adaptor like this. I know I could get a USB controller, but in my experience that sort of thing is not always very comfortable, and I know my GC controller is. Plus I have loads of controllers already. I assume a WaveBird will work with this, just by plugging the receiver into the controller port. But if not I could always use on of my wire ones I guess.

So basically, does anyone have any experience with this sort of product? What are the drivers like, and are the buttons mappable to keyboard keys? Also does anyone know of a place in the UK where I could buy it, as most of the sites and auctions are American. Thanks guys.

I've used a PS2 version of the same sort of thing. It works admirably, but often you need a third party button mapper to get the full use of it as the drivers are usually sketchy. Also, back up the drivers you get with it as the drivers for my adapter cannot be found online easily.

Yeah, from other pictures of that same device it seems as though the drivers come on a floppy disk :rotate: but luckily my desktop has that drive and I can put it on a thumb drive or something.

The main thing I'm concerned about is that the drivers recognise the button presses and stick movements, cos if I have at least that, I can fine tune it with a button mapper or something.

There may have been developments since I last checked, but as far as I know, no USB adapters for Gamecube controllers work with the Wavebird.

Personally, I use my Wiimote and Classic controller with a bluetooth adapter and GlovePIE for my PC gamepad needs.

Oh my. This is genius. I'm such a moron for not thinking about this. The Remote has a beautiful d-pad (much, much better than the Wavebirds). Well done that sir.

I've been meaning to look at the Mac/Wii Remote homebrew - but failed to get my ibook to detect the remote yet. Grr.

If I can get it working with cave story I will be in heaven

My many Macs demand this avenue be explore immediately. Anyone with experience?

What do you use for bluetooth? My mobo doesn't have it included and I've been looking to buy a dongle, but I don't want to buy one that's not compatible with wiimotes.

I think it's thread worthy (and I have a few links) so to get more attention I will knock one up.

I bought this, and it works fine: http://www.acortech.com/Generic_ES-388_Class_1_USB_V1.2/ES-388/partinfo-id-3219645.html

Hm ok, that seems a bit weird that it wouldn't work with a wavebird, because I can't imagine the RF receiver being seen by the GC any differently as a regular wired controller, otherwise it wouldn't work in games... Or is it something different to that?

Nintendo probably had the Wavebird in mind from the start, so it's possible the Gamecube hardware interfaces with it differently. Or it could just draw more power than a regular controller, and the USB adapters don't compensate.

Hm, ok. So is it certain that there's not a single controller with WaveBird support?

I was thinking about buying one of those GC-to-PC controller converters, but I somehow doubt that the drivers will work for Windows Vista.

Hope you don't mind - I'm going to copy this over into the Wii remote thread I made. But know the title of this threads been changed maybe I jumped the gun.

Sorry didn't want to steal any thunder... :(
