I'm really torn on whether to craft badges now, or wait till the sale starts.
On the one hand, I'll get more some more gems to play with while they are for sure still valuable, on the other, there may be meta stuff during the sale like during Summer, where crafting badges early lost you points for the team, which granted didn't matter that much but was still annoying.
Valve is "giving away" a ton of games before the sale so it seems crazy there could be even more coming, but at the same time, it doesn't seem right for them to have a pre-sale meta, and then just nothing for the sale proper. I could see them doing stuff with free-to-play games, and winning stuff for that, but would waiting to craft be beneficial for that that? I have no idea.
Well, I guess maybe it still has room to grow then. The bid amounts are going up and so is the gem bag value. Cashing out is starting to look good.
Went ahead and cashed out.
Made a few Steambucks for a bunch of emotes and backgrounds that, a month ago, I couldn't give away.
I still have some token bids on a few things that either everybody already has or nobody else wants.
I like the gem/auction system they went with this year.
It feels much less like micromanaging zerglings.
If only they hadn't launched with such zanniness. Also I'm still suspicious that its a double feint and there is going to be some use for the gems during the actual sale.
*shrug*
If the hypothetical double feint somehow makes me feel frantic enough, I can always cash back in at a loss.
I'll have a few gems left over from dead auctions anyway.
Durante's fix didn't take 20 minutes, it was just available 20 minutes after launch. The game had released at retail a few days early so he was able to snag a copy and work on it over those few days to have it ready by launch.

I'd do it now. Gems might not be a 100 percent guarenteed win but they're sure as shit a better percentage than the big "win your top 10" contests.
Ended up pushing into a higher range than I original intended to. $5 in gem money for The Forest of Doom maybe not be the bestest bargain ever, BUT I didn't actually put $5 into this. I've already gotten back any steam bux spent on gems.
So after @Sumanai made like a jerk and tracked down what game I was hoping to win at auction, @Big Classy came along and crushed my high bid on it. Because monsters.
When I pointed out that I don't have any more gems to try to outbid the Isymonster, he demonstrated that he has no idea how to auction.

Right now I'm leaning towards crafting the normal badges, and saving all the holiday cards till the sale starts. Seems like the best risk/reward balance.
In my defense, I had no idea you couldn't cancel bids you were currently leading in. Also in my defense, you hit first with the aptly named Words for Evil. Or, also known in American English as Words for Pixie
Gem prices keep shooting up. Pushing a buck and a quarter right now, only 12.5k bags left listed.
Really getting tempting to pull my gems out of the thing altogether and just list them. If it gets to, say, a $1.50 and I sold all my gems, even after the cut, I'm looking at a good $60.

@isorn gifted me Door Kickers because he knew it was the only game in this stupid gem meta shit that I was actually trying to get. Thanks dude! Now I'm selling my gems I guess?
Oh, wow, I accidentally realized something a bit dickish you can do.
So it looks like Valve is treating 100 gems as the smallest "increment" which bids can automatically rise by.
I went to bid 1 over what was shown, it pushed theirs up to 100 gems higher, I cancelled my bid so I could put in my old bid, his bid stayed at 1500 instead of 1400.
So the price listed is actually rounded up to the nearest 100 gems over what the #2 person's bid is, or rather the highest #2 person's bid while the round was running.

Now I have been wrong maybe like, once before, but I can't imagine gems not continually increasing in value up until maybe Thursday before the sale strikes. I wouldn't dump them on the market till at least Wednesday night.
For those who want to hop into the Don't Starve Together beta a bit early and want to perhaps pick up a copy of the single player Don't Starve for a friend - pay attention better than I did!
I bought the discounted Frontier Pack for $5 and, like a maroon, totally disregarded Steam specifically telling me I wasn't getting a second copy of Don't Starve to gift away since I already owned it. For some reason I had it in my head that since I was getting Don't Starve Together as an owner of Don't Starve, that I could buy that pack and gift a copy of each away while opting into the beta early. That'll teach me to Steam when I'm not feeling well. Oops!

Maybe? But I'm seeing this:
and a couple of similar ones. They're very much the exception. Whether that's because people are tending to use multiples of 100, or something screwy with the system is anyone's guess.
edit: or maybe no one has tried to overbid them this round. I dunno!

What happens is this.
Two people have a bid of, say, 800 and 973 on Who's That Flying.
Someone else comes in and bids 1100. It shows as 1000. They win, it's removed, and the next person's bid is shown - 973. because the gap between them and 800 is more than 100.

It could be that the maximum bid by the #1 is 973 gems, and therefore cannot round up to the 1000 gems for the 100 gem increment.

I have apparently had the best luck, or I need to spend time on some sort of real money auction market. I've now won 3 games totaling $70 bucks list price for 16,600 gems.

Those background prices seem to be keeping pace with the gem bags too. I kept one each of the various holiday sale backgrounds I had already so I can click through them and see the starting prices. They've jumped up to 12-14 cents on average now.
Looks like all the auction shenanigans were amusing enough for @Big Classy so he decided to send me Carmageddon TDR 2000. I remember playing a ton of the original game but I don't think I ever got to play any of the sequels. Thank you!
Hmm, yeah I hadn't thought about jumping ahead to badge crafting. Since I have about 17 sets I could complete that's another 100 gem value background I'd likely never use.
Oh wait no, it's the holiday card set that'd be worth 100. Never mind.
New Sherlock is actually at a reasonable price on the auctions. Game hasn't dipped below 29 bucks I don't think, current bids are in the 20ish buck range, which is probably how much it'll hit the Dale for. Heard it's pretty good too.
So, @Jragghen, I get to choose your next game to play all the way through before you can play another game, as per your charity incentive. Mrs. Dirk said it would be TOO MUCH of a dick to make you play The Last Remnant, even though it's totally awesome, but if it's too much of a dick move then so be it. So, if that would be too much of a dick move, my choice for game for you to play is Bulletstorm, the dick killing simulator. It's a fantastic dick game about dick kicking and dick shooting. All about the dicks. Plus, now's the time to play, in case GFWL goes away and it's no longer an option in the future. It really IS a great game. Have fun. You know, for the children.
