I don't think you need to buy 60 packs to get back into hearthstone.
Really? I stopped playing the initial release back when it became evident that there was a ceiling where I would not win unless I had enough Legendaries. Has that been fixed?
Zoo doesn't use any legendaries, it's still always good.
yeah, but its not fun (for everyone)
fun in CCGs can come from three different things (from MTG):
- Winning by piloting the best deck in the best way (Spike)
- Creating cool combos and new ideas (Johnny)
- Playing the creatures that are coolest/biggest/awesomest, regardless of if they are good or not (Timmy)
Its been shown again and again that anyone can be a Spike in this game. "Trump did it" gets repeated every time this gets brought up. Being a Johnny or Timmy is much much harder since most of the cards needed to "create cool combos and new ideas" and most of the cool/big/awesome creatures sit behind epic and legendary rarity level. Those take a long time to get and Johnny and Timmy are being told to endure not having fun while being a Spike in order to eventually and hopefully have the opportunity to have fun in their way.
Edit: I am like 80% Johnny and 20% Spike. I stopped playing because the time needed to get the cards I wanted in order to try out new combos and deck ideas became too great. I'm back now because commons and uncommons are easier to come by and I can have some fun again coming up with new ideas due to these more easily acquired cards.
There's also Vorthos who's all about flavor. For example, the Vorthos in me really wants to make a shaman deck where the only minions are sticks. Deadly, deadly sticks.
I might cheat and add Fire/Earth Elemental because they were attached to totems in WoW.

So that's sorta like what TotalBiscuit tends to do with gimmick/theme decks?
As a sidenote, I'm sad that I can't watch TB's Hearthstone content anymore. I've become competent enough that it's gotten to the point where watching someone at his level play is mentally painful.
I feel so off balance in arena. I was expecting the rush of GvG players to make things much easier with a greater volume of casual players, but I have been having a hell of a time. Almost every run I cruise up to 3 or 4 wins and then just get wrecked one game after another. I'm not the greatest arena player ever but I am failing so consistently at 3 and 4 that something just feels wrong and I'm not clued into whatever it is.
I can accept that I might just be an average player, but something is bizarre when I've not been able to crack 4 wins in 10 runs since GvG launched.
Have any other arena players noticed a change in the average player and adapted drafting strategies? It seems like a lot of people are trying to draft very aggressively, but that might just be bias from me reading chatter about arena. Is drafting for more taunt and heal a wise move? Maybe an extra emphasis on removal spells?
I think I might try to make a Hobgoblin Hunter deck. The interaction between Hobgoblin and Release the Hounds/Snake Trap seems like it could be pretty cool.
Neither of those interactions work. Hobgoblin only applies to minions played directly from your hand, not minions summoned by the effects of other cards.
Oh, well glad you said something, saves me a nasty surprise.
For future reference, in Hearthstone card text, "play" always means "play from your hand" whereas "summon" just means "enters the field from anywhere".
Heh, so I had 8 mana and a Sneed's Old Shredder in my hand. I also had a Piloted Shredder thingy, the 4/3, that I wanted to run into the opponent's sole 4/3. I played the Sneed's and exchanged minions and said OH SHIT PLEASE NO DOOMSAYER PLEASE NO DOOMSAYER
It wasn't a Doomsayer! It was a Mana Wraith. Got lucky on that one!

I think it's just more people playing so above 3 wins match making is always finding people with decent drafts. Large influx of mostly minion cards makes removal cards a big difference in how good your deck is
Huh, so you can't earn classic packs through Arena mode any longer? Thought maybe there was a toggle or an option somewhere but doesn't look like it.
I rarely buy the packs straight out and instead pay into Arena to earn new cards. I have a pretty healthy spread of classic, but would still want to add some more. Seems strange the only way would be to just direct buy the packs.
If anyone's looking for a Hunter deck (haha) to play, and you've gotten yourself a Sneed's, this is what I'm rolling at rank 14 atm.
The multi-shots so far haven't been extremely useful; might swap them for explosive traps. I don't know how far it'll go, but it's fun to play so far.
Even as I'm playing this, I'm bored. Underhunter is not suddenly exciting or engaging gameplay with the addition of a slew of new Deathrattles and Feign Death. Though honestly it should be more exciting, 'cause more value.
Gonna work instead on a longer game control deck with Gahz and maybe Krush and maybe some spare part generators.
So guys, if I were to go on another pack buying spree to try and beat Heroic Kel Thuzad (because he's still a cheating bastard) do I spend my gold on GvG or regular packs?
To play jdark advocate, there actually was a period of time where the game was considered very legendary dependent. Zoo took a while to figure out. For a time the cheapest deck was freeze Mage, one that ran multiple epics.

I can't remember what cheese I did to beat him, but I think it was just restarting until I got the right basic cards.
Mechwarper allows some pretty crazy early plays. And unlike undertaker, it's not all focused in one card in return for not getting huge itself.
I'm very curious to see how mech aggro decks shape up. I think every aggro focused neutral mech is common except for the one that buffs your minions at random so it could be a good way for newer players to move past basic decks.
Mech aggro with mech warper and jeeves is amazing.
A couple classes have great aggro mechs, notably shaman, paladin, and rogue.
A shaman with the windfury mech and the weapon that buffs a mech is insane.

Hey, if I'm wrong now, fuck yeah.
My old school no theme, just value druid deck has been doing well so far.

You can also just craft the classic cards you want (using dust from the GvG packs).

Working on my next 0-3 arena, guess I should buy packs.

Yeah I was kind of explaining how I played the game to a friend who's thinking about starting to play, but Arena play as primary card gain source might not be the best bet now since you're going to want to fill in the base set as well. This is from more of a no real $$ approach as well.
So I threw this Shaman deck together randomly and it's 5 for 5 right now.
Highlight was probably the game against a Hunter where I had 2 Mechwarpers, 2 Whirling Zap-o-matics, and a Piloted Shredder on Turn 3.
Mechwarper is...strong.
No Tinkertown Technicians or Mechanical Yetis? Those two cards are amazing, I feel like they're staples in any Mech deck. If not TTT then definitely Mech Yeti.

I didn't get any of those from packs yet (somehow, I know), but you're right, they're insanely strong and need to be in this deck.

Yeeeaaahh.
It should maybe cost more than 2 mana.
Got 5 warbots, though.
Though
Leper Gnome -> Fairie Dragon -> Coin for Yeti -> Glaivezooka + Bloodsail -> Venture Co is a hell of an opener and drew a concession on turn 6.

had a rogue dominance quest so made an aggro mech deck

routine to have five minions on board by turn 2
