Probably a late bit of advice, but something that helped me with some of the grind:
You likely have enough vanguard/crucible marks for boots and/or gloves. I went ahead and bought both and had them equipped through all the Dark Below story line and quests along with whatever bounties were around them. Both are now maxed out and just need the mats and my light level of 28/29 is all but the same.
Pretty sure people were saying they did normal with pubbies. So isn't it just a regular strike on Earth?
Last night tried it several times for a minute or two each time, never changed from 1/3 guardians for me. Both 24 and 26 strike lists matched in 15-30 sec though.
EDIT: Did that 1st raid loot chest and got some primary sniper rifle that looks like a Springfield 1903. Flip-up iron sights, bolt action, wooden stock. One of the perks is for bonus precision damage. Wonder how much it is. Otherwise it sucks because I can't carry very much ammo for it at all.

I think I figured out how to fix the RNG nature of the very end of the loot/level curve in Destiny:
What if, in addition to gear drops, Aetheon/Crota/whoever dropped a burnable token that, when used, bumped your Light level to that raid's cap for the duration of a specific raid lockout? Just mechanically added (<current light max> - <your light points>) light to you as a buff, while you were in a particular raid/checkpoint.
You might still be waiting for a long time for the specific gear you want to drop, but by completing a normal-mode raid, you'd get a "golden ticket" to participate in a Hard Mode run with your already-max'd clanmates/buddies. It wouldn't have an inflationary effect or get people through the top-end content "too fast", and the perk for finally landing your gear (other than maximum frabjosity) would be that you wouldn't have to run a normal mode, then a hard mode, each week.

I'm looking to build a fighting force of extraordinary magnitude. We will forge our spirits in the tradition of our ancestors. You have my gratitude.
Basically I have the K/D exotic bounty for Bad JuJu to do in the crucible and I'd like some back up. If anyone is interested later today, I'll be online around 4 or 5pm EST.
I'm not sure if Team Motorboat Kitten is looking to do the VoG, Crota, or whatever
This is Jefe, he is old and toothless.

I was a bit worried since it took us longer than I thought it would to make it through the first and second phases.
But we OWNED the third phase. Second try and we completed it.
Then we crashed against the final fight. I think we were all a bit tired and the timing for it will take a bit to get down, but we should be able to get it done this week sometime.
What's the plan tonight? Do we wanna make a run at Crota? Or do a "forgot some loot" VoG run? Or heck, maybe we just wanna make some runs at the new, high level weekly and nightfall? I'm up for whatever.

According to Bungie's twitter account, the new DLC strike is being added into the Weekly rotation as expected. So, it's not just this week as some had thought it was going to be, which didn't make sense to me honestly.
EDIT: D'OH, this was posted a couple days ago. So old news. Sorry, never mind, go about your Dark Below business.

I've said this once and I'm saying it again, hitting lvl 32 is going to take forever.
Levelling up Crota gear takes ~21 shards per piece. Assuming you get an exotic as a fourth piece, that's ~63 shards to hit lvl 32.
Crota only has three loot drops, one pretty much guaranteed chest and another chest that is hard to get. So for most of us, that means 3 drops and a chest. Compare that to the Vault that had 3 chests, and 4 drops. Even with that many drops and other ways to get ascendant mats, it still took a while to get the mats to hit 30. Crota has one less drop and one less chest with no supplemental way to get Radiant mats.
Best case you get 2 Radiant Shards from every drop and chest after getting three pieces of gear. That means 4 the first run and 10 every run after that. Meaning we won't get enough mats to hit 32 unless we run the Raid every week for six weeks getting only Radiant Shards. That is BEST CASE.
More likely, is that you get a mix of Shards and Energy along with not always getting the difficult chest and probably not beating Crota the first attempt or two. This pushes the realistic scenario of hitting 32 back to more like 10-12 weeks, or 3 months of raiding every week.
Not a fan. There need to be other ways to gain Radiant Materials.

i wouldn't mind doing some weekly/nightfall madness, or a "it's called a Chestpiece, motherfucker" VOG run. i'm not really up for Crota this evening.

At some point they'll have to have the daily heroic and other avenues that give radiant materials. Or rather, I really really hope they do. If not, people will barely be hitting the new level cap when the new dlc drops. It's like they want us to have three of the same class and run it three times a week.

Yeah. I'm thinking their intent was to avoid a situation when the 70-90% hardcore pop was going: "Man, when's the next expansion coming out again? I hit cap within a week of release of this DLC, wth bungie?"
That last 10% of course are going to hit cap via deleting toons and whatnot. I suppose that's the disadvantage (on their side) to having level being tied to the items you can freely transfer between characters and all.
edit: spitballed loose percentage breakdown - (70% of the population your average/causal players with one or two toons at 28/29), (20% are "hardcore" in that they play a lot and may have multiple maxed toons, etc), (10% have three maxed out characters and all maxed out gear, etc).

Hmm, with the time it's gonna take for one character to hit 32 it looks like most people will be barely getting a shot at Crota's End Hard mode before the next expansion drops.
Of course, this is me assuming that hard mode has level 34's in it. From what my buds already in the raid have said, normal mode has 32's in the later portions. I can only imagine anyone at 31 or below would be woefully ineffective.

Much thanks to @Trojan35 for joining me and a buddy on our way continuing our blind run through Crota's End. While we only made it through the first section, we got far enough in the second section to grasp what we need to do, even if I had to cut the night short.
I don't know how much of my enjoyment is the raid itself, versus being able to run it before people know it by rote. But it's just so enjoyable I almost don't care that I dropped enough marks to buy 3 pieces of legendary gear that I'm going to actively replace just to try and hit 31.

So, I played Destiny last night for the first time since last Thursday.
My "not entirely sure" feeling about the expansion seems to have been justified. I was able to do the first Eris quest/mission, but the second one was impossible for not-yet-max-level me. (For reference, I was trying it as a LL28; my only 300-attack weapon is Invective; and my best primary is Bad Juju.) I died 15 times in there before I finally gave up in frustration. I simply could not put out enough firepower to do any damage to the boss. I literally ran out of ammo on all three guns without ever getting through her shields!
To make myself feel better I went and bought some new gauntlets and did all six of the PvE bounties. At the end of the night I had crested just into LL29 (a new high point for me!) and finally got the "String of Curses" perk on Bad Juju activated. I'm really loving this perk! It's like having unlimited ammo. It only took about 10 minutes before I simply stopped reloading... ever!
My point is that the paywall thing is not only hurting people who didn't buy the DLC, but it is also hurting people who DID buy the DLC, but weren't "raid ready" when it came out. The required missions have such a steep gear requirement (which is to say, level requirement, since LL is 100% tied to gear) that unless you were already at the top of the peak gear-wise, it is extremely difficult to get through.
I'll probably try it again tonight. Based on what has been said about the VoG, I'm hopeful that an additional level will bump my DPS enough that it wont be like attacking a brick wall with a butterknife.
You'd still have the problem of "oh, I leveled up the firelock side, but it wants me to kill with Axiom Bolt."
