A common practice among soldiers has been to use the coins to determine who buys a round of drinks by taking out a coin and issuing the challenge by slamming it on the bar. If everyone has their coin on them then the challenger must buy the drinks, if someone forgot their coin then that person buys. Another common way to determine the winner/loser is to challenge an individual and who ever has the coin from the highest ranking officer/NCO is the winner. The Challenge Coin has become very popular in other groups besides just the military and PAX is no exception.
I don't understand how that ranking officer thing applies however..
Certain high ranking officers/government officials (Commander in Chief, various cabinet secretaries, Chief of Staff of the Army or Air Force/Commandant of the Marine Corps/Chief of Naval Operations/Various other generals, etc, etc.) will have coins minted specifically for them to hand out. They're someone hard to obtain, as you can only legitimately receive the coin from them.
Say we're all drinking and someone (call it Private Joe Snuffy) slaps down their unit commanders coin. Everyone else reaches for the coin they tend to carry, which comes from the highest ranking person they've met in their career. Sergeant X drops a 2 star general officer coin. Master Sergeant Y pulls out a coin from the commander of Central Command (4 star). Specialist Z (being the shamtastic member of the E-4 Mafia that he is) pulls the Secretary of Defense's coin out of his pocket. Everyone else, having coins from lower ranking people, owe him drinks.
I've personally witnessed someone pull the President's personal coin out and drink free for the rest of the night. Though honestly, I'd keep that in the display case. Don't want to lose that one.
I would like to make a request for anyone who has gotten every East coin. Could someone post some nice high quality shots of the previous coins? The pictures on our community wiki page for the East coins are lacking in quality and I would like to update them.
Thank you.
I'll try to do that tonight for the 2014 coin. I'll take one of the 2015 coin if you want, but the one uploaded looks pretty good already. I plan to take my camera to PAX, so if anyone has their older coins, I could take pictures of them.

While I agree that being insensitive is an issue, so is being oversensitive.

Not sure if my phone can do anything good enough but I'll see what I can come up with tonight when I get home from work.
Mwahaha! my coins have arrived!
There is one with a slight defect (a tiny little groove just below the keyboard), but the rest appear great.
Also, one of the cases is broken, but, that's fine, as one coin is just gonna be in my pocket, and doesn't need a case!
Well I cannot create an account on that wiki page. I tried to use my normal wikipedia account, but to no avail. I have a hi-rez photo of the 2014 coin, but it's a 10MB picture, and I don't want to post it in here, but here is the lower rez version, only at 1.2 MB. It took probably 50 different shots with 5 different lenses, but I think it turned out well, except for the color of the coin itself which I blame on the lighting (spoiled for size).
NOTE: If you quote this, please remove the picture so that it doesn't bloat this thread.

Considering they're coming from Phoenix, I'm not sure that's hard to figure
Actually their press is in New Hampshire.
That would probably be why I got mine so quickly! As always the coins are beautiful, just need to find a nice way to display them all!
I bought a bunch of little easel stands on ebay. They cost next to nothing and look great, plus I can take the coins down and handle them if I want to see the other side or show them to anyone. Couldn't do that with a more formal display, though they'd be more protected. The easel stands also hold my past PAX passes and Star Citizen member card really nicely! Make sure you get the kind that are a single piece of plastic -- the folding kind are fragile and tend to snap. They come in lot sizes from 1 to hundreds and everywhere in between.

That's a cool idea. Might have to order some.
I giving away some coins to a few friends. So I bought these Gift Boxes. The plastic coin holder is smaller and tighter so it locks the coins from bouncing around. Also the plastic coin holder from Phoenix does not fit in the gift box in case anyone wanted to know.
Now to wait for the pins and get a specialty box for those as well. I tried eBay but not having any luck. Might have to hit local jewelry shop :P
Those are really classy and make a great way to present the coins as a gift. I'm just going to give mine in the little plastic cases, though I may end up putting them in ones that fit them (I just ordered a bunch). In case anyone is also looking at cases, they often are measured in metric, and 1.75" is 45mm.
So, if a handful of new people could throw a couple bucks at the gofundme, that would be super.
But if no one wants to, that's fine too, I went into this willing to eat the die costs if it came to that. And 25% is a bargain in that light.
A decision made much easier by starting a new job last week after a year of unemployment. (Although.. How I ever got used to mornings I'll never know, so tired..)
Donated as well today...only $40 to go folks, let's do it!

Let's go PAXers! Don't leave your fellow PAXer hanging like this. Let's help to finish paying back SutibunRi.
He did step up to lead this project, and if you ordered by the deadline you likely have coin your by now.
To those of you that have donated to the die so far the community thanks you, for making this forum what it is. If you haven't yet there's still an oppurtunity to help out!
I am happy to say, funding complete!
The last $40 by someone who I can only assume is not actually The Doctor.
Thanks everyone!
I hope you all enjoy your coins as much as I do!
Sorry @sum10fishy backordered should mean that they're out of the first batch, the next batch will be printed after orders close on the last day of EAST.
So, those samples akidderz was sending me arrived today..
They are really, really nice.
I'll bring them to East so everyone who wants to can get a look, the only place I know for sure I'll be all weekend in the Pre-Pax game night to pick up some Steins, and play some board games.

I just got my confirmation that second batch is sending! Hope for the win! I should be receiving them within the next week. Heads up for your order to @sum10fishy, you might be able to get these just before East!

I GOT THEM! Awesome! They look great. Thanks for everyone who helped make these a thing.
I'll be at the Pre-Pax Boardgame night at the Westin on Thursday evening/night, I'll bring along the sample coins akidderz sent for anyone who wants to come take a look at them, they're pretty impressive.
Just wanted to pop in and say for anyone with access to a 3d printer this stand (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:516444) works great. Took about 10 minutes to print both pieces. The stand is small for sure, but it once the pieces are together and the coin is in place it actually holds really well, and doesn't get in the way. Very happy I chose to use this stand and the coin looks great in it

@Le_Goat Color corrected for you
While the lighting might be a bit off, it is way better than just the concept art we had up before. Thanks, it has been added to the site.
