The main goal there is to fix the perceived problem of excessively powerful defense in the game. (Don't fixate too much on the exact amount of shield consumed. Variables are variables.) It is certainly possible to reliably punish rolls and air-dodges in this game. In actual practice, the ratio between invulnerable frames and recovery frames is extremely high, to the extent that an intermediate player, particularly with the lag introduced by online play, typically finds that attacking an aware opponent is a losing proposition. Furthermore, since your shield is regenerating during dodge rolls and so on, a strong player can interleave full shields and dodges such that getting hit is really only ever their own fault. By attaching a cost to dodges, you remove the efficacy of long-term defense because no matter whether you shield or dodge, you will eventually run out of defense points and eat an attack.
... it's kind of frustrating having the developers so distant. It's a mechanic that could easily be patched in (or, to be less presumptuous, implemented quickly in a test build and evaluated for viability), but how the hell would one get it to Sakurai's ears?
Have you tried talking to his ravens, Hugin and Munin?
They fly around the world collecting ideas for the new Smash.
Collecting ideas so that Sakurai can make sure to put stuff in that no one was asking for or would expect.

Spoiler: the devs don't care about competitive play.
I don't know who is working on balance changes, but the game is straight-up designed around people BSing on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Any competitive game that can be dredged from that is a happy coincidence (see: Melee).
Hmmm. On the other hand, I know Lloyd had a reasonably strong showing in character popularity polls for Smash, so that's probably a bad sign for K.Rool fans (as though the Mii Costume wasn't already...).
Swear to god, if we get Paper Mario out of the Smash Ballot I'm going to... issue the biggest sigh.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
i realize the characters aren't just obtusely overpowered, but why do so many of marios moves have nearly no recovery, or all of them autocancel? And why does playing against rosalina as a character with any projectile just negate that entire section of moves?
it's like every time i play this game online i want to quit it and go back to PM, or even pick melee back up because at least those have some general concepts of fighting games correct.

While I understand you, I find this funny because my biggest problem with Mario in PM is how his forward air always seems to autocancel. You'd think such a beefy move would be punishable, but nope. Throw that shit out all day, who cares.

On the third hand, there are Mii outfits for characters like Meta Knight and Mario.

Is this without L-canceling the move? I main ask because I don't deal enough with Mario to know. And the shield/hit stun in smash 4 is just laughable at best, its like they want it to go back to pre-combo street fighter days.

Well yeah but those were never in question. Metaknight is like the most popular Nintendo villian . K. Rool is Bowser if he was unemployed for a few years and ate to many donuts

Of course that was pre-release.
Wouldn't be shocked if we get loads more Mii outfits for established characters that were runners-up on the survey, just to get as much representation as possible.

I'm pretty sure Rosalina has a projectile-negation move because otherwise characters with projectiles will just backpedal and spam Luma until it dies. Either one or the other of "Luma" and "projectile specials" is going to get negated in that matchup, and since Rosalina has to spend an action on cancelling any given projectile... I'd say it's mostly a wash.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
More costumes, including bear...Gunner costumes, Flying Man from Mother, and uh...this guy
Was not expecting that.
Is this real? I love Symphonia so much so it's awesome to see it in Smash in some form.
Whaaaaat!? This is awesome!! With this update I'll be getting my two most wanted characters, Lloyd and Chrom....as mii costumes. Still, it's better than nothing! And Lloyd actually looks really good as a Mii fighter, hopefully there is still a chance of him appearing as an actual character.

I'm honestly mostly fine with the gravity field, except for its range. when she go off stage and eat a pk thunder without being in range of any of Ness or Lucas's other moves, it seems like it might reach too far to me. And given that any projectile heavy character is already far away, there is little to punish the move at all.

I've used the Mii fighters with the costumes that I've unlocked for free, but I'm a casual Smash player at best. No way could I be bothered to ever practice a video game (which is funny because that's the reason I like playing Smash over other fighters like SF or MK).
So yeah, I could see people dropping a few bucks here or there for a costume of a character they really like.
Edit: Upon re-reading, this sounds like an insult to y'all that study that game. But quite the opposite, I'm actually impressed that people put that level of effort into the games they like to play.
I figure a Colette Lloyd Mii would work best with the whirlwind, Chakram, spin attack, and Counter moves.
Meanwhile , an actual Lloyd should probably have Blurring Blade (Sword Rain), the flip jump side B (Tempest), the dashing stab down B (Sonic Thust), and Stone Scabbard (Tiger Blade)
Do not trust any balance change claims for like the whole weekend.
"Samus can shoot missiles now. I don't think she could do that before."
"Ganondorf's uptilt can break shields now. That's new!"
"They changed the timing slightly on Ness' PK Thunder. Now it strikes the opponent instantaneously no matter where on the map it was fired from."

Yeah it's crazy how perfectly the Mii fighter's moveset fits with Lloyd. Lloyd's visual design really matches the Mii fighter's aesthetic too, so it's almost perfect.

Edit:
I find it funny that of all the Tales swordsmen to use for Swordsmiis, they chose the one who prominently uses two swords at a time.

I think they got rid of Fox's jab lock combo stuff. not completely sure though, but that one makes me the saddest if its true.
