Well I'd say that I only did maybe a dozen missions or so to advance a rank. Some of those missions were the donation missions where you only receive rep. A few were the "bring us 2 slaves that we can liberate" missions.
However I've also been moving hundreds of tons of cargo between imperial worlds, and I know that is supposed to boost your reputation (along with any other activity at a station like cashing bounties or combat bonds).
Just keep working out of imperial/federal stations and eventually you'll see an "opportunity for advancement" mission on the bulletin board. Complete that mission and you'll be rewarded with a new rank.
My three legged route is pretty convenient for completely many of these milk run missions since frequently one of stations along my route has the requested item. You need non-lethal weapons? The high tech world makes those. I'll just earmark a few cargo slots for those instead of my usual breadwinner cargo. You need grain and fish? I'll pick up some of that from the agri world where I'm buying tobacco.
Now I just need to make a detour to find some food cartridges (because apparently the agri world is just desperately in need of those o_O )
So you are advancing in rank, but what is your reputation like? I've gone up a rank or two in the glorious Empire, but I'm still at neutral reputation.
Reputation is still neutral but I have a little blue triangle next to it.
Immediately after the server maintenance I had a mission waiting for me to deliver a time critical imperial communication. Delivering it ranked me up to the third rank, "Master."
I don't know what dictates the appearance of those rank advancement quests. Maybe it is just random after achieving enough rep points to qualify for one. Perhaps I blew past the rep point requirement for the second, reached the requirement for the third, and then got two back to back advancement quests?
edit:
Oh shit. I've just received an Imperial Summons to Achenar.
To my knowledge, yes. However they had the cobra skin pack available for free this past thanksgiving (I was out of town with family and did not remember that until I checked all my e-mails when I got home....and saw that I was one day too late.)
It is possible they may release freebie skins again in the future. Maybe a green and clover skin for St. Patricks day or something.

*Jettison the 20 tons of biowaste you were carrying just because this was the way you were heading.*
Don't know if this has been posted yet but if you throttle back completely while in supercruise the unidentified signals will spawn within the safe drop distance.
You can just target them and drop immediately. Great if you have a mission that needs a lot of USS's for pirates etc.
The same kind of people who think you should be straight up murdered for 200 bounty and it's completely your fault that you hit that federal viper as it came up from behind and sat directly between you and your target.

Well it is your fault if you shoot that Viper. Once that happened to me a couple of times I started paying attention.
And if the thought of another player attacking you ties your stomach up in knots just play in Solo mode or Group mode.
Generally speaking griefing in Elite is a myth. Tons of player have reported being griefed for it to later come out that they were getting interdicted by NPCs. Elite has no chokepoints and plenty of ways for an observant player to avoid conflict in open play. There is nothing like Eve's bubbled up gate camp all night disco dance parties on major arteries.
Has anyone tried flying into the path of a federal viper when it is shooting to see if they acquire a 200 credit bounty and then get murdered by their fellow lawmakers?
Haha, I just had a nasty thought. Imagine two players working together. One is wanted and one has a clean record. Wanted player attacks a cargo hauler and if it tries to defend itself the clean player deliberately flies into the path of the gunfire. Whoops guess who is now a dirty criminal.

Oh man, killed my first player today! A viper kept chasing my cobra around the combat zones in Ho Hsi. I didn't really want to deal with him (I had 25k in unredeemed bounties and 2 warzone targets left on a mission), but yolo. I jumped into a zone, flew a couple K out, and went dark while I waited for him to show up; sure enough, he shows up and, not seeing me, declares on the Ho Hsi side. I wait for him to start tangoing with another viper before coming online and chasing him down. I managed to get his shields down before he could react, so he bolted off. Too bad the cobra has a higher top speed, sucka!!! Some lasers to the butt later, and he was just an explosion.
Now I've got a type-6 and need to find a decent trade route. I noticed I could make 1k/ton on personal weapons, but I'm wondering if I could do better without resorting to rare goods.
Ok, this is so cool. I just flew to Sol to check it out, and all the constellations are just the way I know them from looking at the night sky in real life!
And I just bought my first Adder. Anyone have any hints for an intrepid explorer? How do I gather that precious exploration data that I'll sell for presumably stellar (hur hur) profits? Only got a basic discovery scanner right now, but as soon as I can afford it I'll get a surface scanner.
Two questions:
1. I'm looking to upset the balance in a certain sector. I heard that you should take missions for the controlling faction, then when you get offered the choice, turn it in for another faction. Is there any way to tell what missions you can do this with?
2. Is there any way to get a ship to release more cargo once the cargo hatch is at 0%?
LHS 3505 has devolved into a minor civil war. I'm on friendly terms with the ruling party and wanted to get in on the action at a war zone, but I wasn't able to select a faction. How are you suppose to do that?
In the right hand cockpit menu, the far right tab, the top option is Faction. Choose that first before you start shooting people!

That happens a lot to me with the "Destroy x ships of y type" missions. Unless you only need to kill 1 or 2 ships, odds are that one of the USS's you'll drop into has a single ship that hails you with something like "There's no need to keep doing this. I'll make a counteroffer." Then your transaction tab will get updated, telling you what you have to do that benefits the faction you were hunting, while typically hurting the original faction. The method for trying to refuse one over the other though is super obtuse, I haven't figured it out yet.
The Galaxy map will show you how many light years each stop along the way is, cumulatively. And the fuel bar will tell me how much fuel my next jump will cost.
How do I find out how much fuel an entire trip, or segment of that trip, will cost? Trying to figure out if I can make it across a span of (apparnetly) empty systems without a fuel scoop.
I accepted a bounty mission with a 150k payout, and one that just wanted me to kill pirates, so I did some USS browsing. In one of them some random Sidewinder pilot (NPC) sent me some gossip messages asking me, had I heard? That notorious pirate David White (who I was supposed to hunt) is in this system! And then at the next USS I found him - in his Anaconda. With me in my Adder. Nopenopenoped the hell out of there!
Later, some rando at a USS offered me paltry credits to abandon my hunt pirates mission because apparently he hates the Federation.
I think I'm gonna go exploring for reals now. Found a good tutorial, and turns out it's really not that complicated.
Huh. Turned Friendly with the ruling faction in Lave just from the trading I've done there.
Also, Merchant rank in trading now.

Even with missions like "Indite purchased at this station", it can be worth it to stop at unidentified signals. Had one where I stopped and a guy said "Yeah, that indite? It's a trap. They're using you to lure out pirates. I know cause they're my pirates, but I also need indite so go to this station instead and I'll pay even more for it". Just 40K to 45K but, still, an extra 5K.
Okay, I decided to get a TrackIR as a Christmas present for myself.
Was pondering maybe getting a HOTAS instead, but I think a HOTAS suffers from not having a TrackIR to look around - when playing with KBAM I just have freelook on a mouse button, and freelook probably controls way better with a mouse than a joystick.
edit: also, I play Arma 3, I'll use the TrackIR a lot there.
So I'm thinking of picking this up because it looks like everything that always makes me want to at EVE, minus all of the stuff that usually terrifies me away from it (which is to say a community that seems a little toxic, especially to new players). Does that sound about right?
Also does it have any gamepad support, I know if probably need to use a keyboard and mouse for most things, but for flight I always feel better using a gamepad.
