Thinking about selling off the parts in my Viper and fully kitting out a Lakon 6. I suppose I should get into trading if I ever want an Asp, and I'm thinking the Lakon would make a decent exploration vessel. I also think it looks like a cute, bulbous breadbox.
Bought myself a joystick ... and could not figure out for the life of me how to access the vertical and horizontal thrusters.
Gonna have another play with it tonight because it was way easier to fight with but docking is impossible right now.
I have a function button on my throttle that I press, and then I use the hat switch for lateral and vertical thrusters. It works well enough, though I'm still getting used to which function buttons do which (I often mean to reset my power management, but instead I end up deploying landing gear in the middle of a RES, etc).
I decided it would be a good idea to get used to headtracking and make the switch from gamepad to joystick at the same time! In case anyone is wondering what free headtracking software looks like I will be uploading a vid soon. (Warning: bad piloting incoming)
Vertical thrusters. I have FA toggle on the front of the throttle.
So I toggle FA, slam full engine reverse, jam max up thrust, and yank the stick back all in one motion... Remembering to turn FA back on half way through so I don't go spinning past and off into space like a fool. But, it's a nearly zero point nose over turn in a Viper with A thrusters (not sure that matters).
It's just more fun than using the hat, for me.
I use the hat for lateral roll/horizontal thrusters, and twist for lateral thrusters.
Video is uploaded. This is with an $8 PS Eye camera, $3 camera drivers, and free headtracking software (FaceTrackNoIR). Works pretty well, although I'm still adjusting my sensitivities and ranges a little bit. This is also my first flight with a joystick rather than a gamepad, so pardon the terrible flying. (Joystick is a $50 Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X and it works great, in case anyone was wondering).
Overall it feels very organic, I just have to be more aware of what I'm doing with my head, or what position I'm playing in. I would definitely recommend!

I awesome'd at the part where you booped him and just kept shooting. Please make more videos and continue updating us with your progress with this. I am very interested in a cheapo solution until Oculus hurry up.
uhh that's all that's important? except like, your discovery scanners and a fuel scoop which are both whatever you want to spend on them they always work

Unfortunately, it is the B5 FSD that costs 1.7M. The A5 FSD costs ~5 mil.
^ you can play around with the ship builder there.
Note: The shipbuilder simulator won't let you, but the game will let you downgrade your ship's sensors to a lower class of sensors. Useful for a trader that is trying to squeeze every ounce of tonnage out of his ship so that he can make that 17LY jump with 200+ tons of cargo.
Guys? How do I file a ticket for losing all my stuff for no reason?
I was boosting towards a station with nothing in my view and had just gotten landing clearance when I blew up in the middle of space. Nothing near me. No reason. Just boom.
Lost a really big chunk of my net worth as it was a Type-6 full of Palladium and I'm not rich.
boy if there's one thing that's fun and compelling gameplay it's spending an hour farting around in supercruise checking every USS you see looking for a pirate you're hunting that's been narrowed down to this one system and never even encountering him once.

Try having an npc bounty hunter show up when you finally find the target and poach the kill. Then you get to look for the target again! Double the fun!

I kind of want my stuff back.
Sorry to hear that. You have to go here and sign in.

man I love me some fuel scooping.
granted I lose time and fuel is rather cheap but I just cannot bring myself to say no to free fuel.
For a break from trading (which I am also terrible at) I decided to buy a Sidewinder and kit it out for fightin' just to see how far I could get.
First attempt was Railgun + Missiles and ... well, I really hope they rethink the cost of ammo. I made a loss despite winning three fights (two eagles and a fellow Sidewinder) making 6k in bounties, 12k(!!) in ammo. Disappointing.
So I swapped to twin gimballed laser cannons instead, and immediately ran into a much bigger ship. Got myself a sweet 30k bounty, but I'm not convinced the old loadout would even have gotten through the shields and would have been a big waste of money.
Really feels like the weapon balance is off, which is a pity because I love using missiles and the railgun is very cool. Maybe it gets better if you're using a larger ship?
Not my best piloting but I killed an elite anaconda in a sidewinder. Let my shields drop but system authority showed up and took some heat off me while they recharged. Strangely it wasn't my assassination mission target. Video won't be uploaded for aaaaaaaaaaaages because 0.2 meg a second upload speed but I'll post it tomorrow when its done.

Railguns are for knocking out subsystems and sniping because the damage doesn't fall off over range, since the ammo is pretty limited it's best to use them once the shields are down. Rockets are for blowing through hull after you drop the shields. Shields do great against explosive damage. With a sidewinder if you want to get fancy I'd choose one of those weapon systems to pair with a laser. Use the laser for taking out the shields then go to town with your saturday night special.
Hmmm.... somehow I'd got it in my head it was the other way around (lasers do badly against shields/better against armor), but that does make more sense.
I'm still not convinced it is worth eating into my profits to carry one, though. It might be worth some more experimentation... my captain name is Demolition Squid after all. I'd like to use some explosives.

Your ships hull has to protect from you from stars, it can handle a little extra light. :P
As for missiles, they're not supposed to be cost-effective. They're easy to use and hit hard but they also have a lot of hard counters. They're mostly for fighting bigger ships in PvE.
So I was getting a bit haphazard with my station docking, and didn't fully appreciate just how fast a Viper really is. So I'm heading into the docking corridor from a distance, hit the afterburned and am doing about 400 m/s. Misjudge it slightly, my ship crunches off the walls and just goes spinning wildly into the dock, slamming into a control tower and then exploding.
Welp.
In other news, missions which require me to find stuff in space can go eat a goose. Is there some secret to getting them to spawn? I got the "betray this mission" USS, but then after going through like, 10 more USS's the damn black box just wouldn't show up.

Other than super extra triple check you're in the right system there's note much you can do but hope.
And yeah trying to boost through or towards the station opening is very risky in the viper.
edit: also you will grow to love the viper. great combat ship and even completely upgraded the replacement cost is under 150k.
ugh, got stuck in the middle of nowhere, unable to go into supercruise cause I was 'too close' to an imaginary object. had to jump to another system, and then jump back, and then cruise for ten minutes back to the binary partner I was exploring.
It will take a lot for me to upgrade from the Eagle. I just love having great maneuverability, it makes dogfights a lot of fun. I'd love more/bigger guns, of course, but I think I'll be using the Eagle for a while.
I've upgraded from a Hauler to an Adder and continue space trucking. I bought a viper for a while but I don't think I out fitted it correctly because I was still getting wrecked in fights.
1. They spawn more regularly the more active the system. Avoid USS missions in unpopulated systems at all costs.
2. Go to minimum throttle. The distance USSs spawn from you is related to your speed. At minimum throttle they spawn right on top of you and you can just instantly shift out into them.
3. Stay near a station, preferably one with a black market. This way you can scoop everything, dump it when full, and have rearm and repair within spitting distance.
Edit: Though I would love some improvements to exploring. Not so much the actual act/rewards, as the information you receive. I want to know which planets are rare because I have a list of what I've discovered. I want to know when I've mapped a system because it's got my tag on it or something. I want to know when I'm the first to map a system, or the most thorough.

It made a really pretty explosion.
You're making me jealous. At the moment I'm stuck with the Adder's space-Prius cockpit.

Aside form that, it seems to be pretty accurate.
