I expected trading to get more boring when I upgraded from the Cobra III to a Type-6. It's actually more fun in a lot of ways. With a real cargo bay and a network of backwater trading planets, I can take delivery missions for any (legal) cargo, and pick them up from somewhere on my route. The changing mission requirements keep the route from devolving into a stale back-and-forth run between two planets.

There are also a hundred percent fewer player pirates out here in the smelly armpit of space, compared to rare goods worlds. It doesn't matter for now, since interdiction is broken, but when piracy works the choice between rare goods and bulk trading will be interesting.

The faction gains are fantastic from turning in several missions on every stop. Which reminds me, I am a Lord of the Empire now, and I expect to be addressed as such.

It's a real tribute to this game that I lost 40% of my assets last night, half due to a bug, and I'm still having a great time. It'll be a sweet windfall if they reimburse me eventually. I am pretending that my ship exploded due to a faulty power plant, and that my civil suit against Lakon Spaceways is winding its way through the Imperial courts.

    @Bonaventure‌
Picking up delivery/sourcing missions alongside my breadwinner commodities along a trade route was what I did with my old Type 6. I ran a High Tech (Performance enhancers/consumer tech)> Agriculture (Tobacco)>Extraction(Palladium) triangle, so I was pretty much able to pick up anything they requested from each of my normal stops along the route. After an hour or so, I'd have to run off to an industrial world to pick up the food cartridges that the agri-world inexplicably had such a strong desire for.

Just make sure you pay attention to which faction you accept quests from. I slowed myself down for awhile by being anti-synergistic and just accepting every mission that I felt that I could fulfill. Just accepting missions from super-power aligned factions is a real way to fast track yourself along the promotion ladder.

They're actually supposed to be nerfing the effectiveness of missiles VS shields pretty hard.

There are a lot of issues with Eagles trolling everything with 3x dumbfire launchers.

Eagles should be able to troll everything cause if you just look at an Eagle it explodes

Took my first Anaconda contract. Hoo boy. If the cops hadn't shown up and distracted him I would have gotten et.

I think one of the issue I'm having is that I'm still rocking the default shields in my Viper. A3 shields are so power hungry, though :(

I also don't think I'm punchy enough against shields. I had an E2 and D2 fixed beam laser equipped, and two gimballed class 1 cannons up top. Once his shields were down I could punch out his power plant pretty easily. It's just getting his shields down that was the problem.

Yeah, I lost two ships last night. One from plowing head on into a face full of plasma accelerator and losing my thrusters, the other from getting rammed by a Cobra in a conflict zone (which cost me about 70k in unclaimed bounties).

    Still having fun.

Go into the modules section of your right panel and set things you don't/can't use with your hardpoints deployed (like your fsd) to the lowest priority. Fit an A3 shield module.

Also maybe consider a B rated shield cell bank if you're using an A? It's heavier but for that you get more charges and (I think) lower power usage.

Ok so I finally found that Anaconda I couldn't find last night, and lost 200k credits as a reward. Apparently even if you're in a kitted out cobra, can stay directly behind them, use chaff and shieldecells as often as possible, and empty your weapons into them as fast as possible, it's still not enough.

    BACK TO TRADING.

What weapons were you using? Anacondas aren't nearly as tough as most people assume they are, especially if you're taking out subsystems and not just hammering against their hulls.

You have to subsystem target against those big ships.

Break the shield, target something and try to narrow in on it. Particularly power plant or FSD. Blowing those up will shorten the fight considerably.

Gimble weapons are terrible at hitting subsystems. Not sure about turrets.

2 medium pulse lasers, a multicannon, and a missile rack which I planned to use when the shields were down but I never even got that far. The problem was less in damage output and more "enemy ship was able to hit me with like 5 lasers from rear facing turrets every couple seconds even with chaff active."

Yeah, I found the easiest way to take out Anacondas in a Viper (and would probably work in a Cobra too) is to have fixes lasers in the class 1 slots to take down shields, then target the powerplant and use fixed cannons in the class 2 slots to blow it up.

Shield cells are important, and ignore the chaff. The targets have too highly rated sensors to be fooled. The best way to avoid the turrets is to be directly behind it, then either slightly above or below it, depending on which turrets are the ones doing more damage.

You were having trouble cutting through its shields with medium lasers? Out of curiosity, what rank was your power distributor?

Also, those turrets are on top mostly so you want to be under an Anaconda as well as behind. An un-upgraded Cobra might not have the maneuverability to maintain that position tho.

Couple days ago I sold everything but my Viper, and jumped down to the Fed/Empire boarder to try and find a new, more permanent, system to base out of.

After a solid day of searching, I found it yesterday morning. Spent all day mapping and collecting market data on the surrounding area, and buying and moving ships to my new base. A quiet little Anarchy with quick connections to both Fed and Empire. There's a 2k ppt bidirectional trade run nearby, and a High Tech station just 30Ly away.

Now, I have to try really hard to not tank my rep with these guys, and somehow increase their influence. Has anyone sussed out what missions make the influence go up, and what actually make it go down?

I'm becoming quite the dogfighter. Last night I escalated a RES until there were 4 hostile Pythons and 2 hostile Anacondas in the scrum. Managed to down 2 of the Pythons and both 'Condas before a seeker exploded too close to a Fed and angered the bear. Once I'd soothed their hurt feelings, I cashed in 200k in bounties for about 30~40 minutes of fighting.

Yeah, killing a guy gives a rep hit to that faction, period.

You lose rep with the guys you kill, if they are wanted you gain rep with the guys who put the bounties on them.

That's only if/when you claim the bounty, though. You lose the rep the second they die. You only gain the opposed rep if you live to claim the bounty and "prove the death", as it where.

In unrelated, yet mildly related, the game related radio is trucking along. I'm just working on programming right now. With other music only a click away, I want to have enjoyable stuff playing. All the moving parts have moved and I can literally hit play on this one program, and you can hear it when you hit play at a URL.

I'm getting a little frustrated with trading. I'm running a fairly optimal bi-station route, where I get between 9 and 1.5k pt per run. The most I can make out of a run is a little over 150k each way, and the sheer amount of grind I'll have to do to get to the next ship up, then the next ship up from THAT is overwhelming. I'm not sure I can be arsed.

    Go exploring for a while!

The fun part about exploration is that it's the polar opposite of trading in terms of structure. I've got my little Adder kitted out with a repair module, fuel scoop, decent shields, discovery scanner, and detailed surface scanner. I went to the edge of inhabited space, and then just lit out for the unknown. 20 systems later, I'm still tooling around! The longer I stay out here looking, the bigger the payday when I get back.

Your ship is as good at it as it can possibly be pretty much instantly, too. Even without an Advanced Scanner, parralaxing to find planets and stars is actually real fun. Instead of worrying over how quickly you can grind things out, you're having a decent time seeing weird sights and figuring out what the galaxy is made of. I found a water world last night and it was pretty sweet.

I think consciously swapping between Trade/Explore/Combat is a good way to keep things entertaining. Each focus has a feel that's distinct, and they all kind of complement each other in terms of what bits are engaging.

Take a moment to donate what you can to Critical Resistance and Black Lives Matter.
