Your going somewhere, but if you really want to get these portraits to the next step you need to seriously study the skull. The proportions are all slightly skewed in these, a solid handle on the skull would help that alot.
Also, you may want to try a backwords approach to your features. In the last one, the black outline around the lips is hurting the peice. What you might try, it using tone, light lines, and knowledge of the skull is create all of the structure around the lips first. Then, when you draw the lips, you will realize that they are infact conected and a part of the rest of the form and not just pasted over top.
That first one and last one are on completely different levels. It's almost like they were done by different artists altogether. Your life stuff currently kicks the crap out of your other works, which is a complement considering that i've seen your other works on another forum, and it's not bad at all. I find it odd how i'm having the opposite problem, where it's extremely difficult for me to create realistic pieces rather than made-up work.
But yeah, best get crackin on studying the skull; Just doing one bone, muscle, and face study (at least an hour on each section) does wonders for the artists. Try doing this at least three times a week and you'll really be seeing some results.
