Anyone else in this MCC Insider Program? I'm in it now and downloading something 70 gb, which I'm assuming is the game I already have only updated? Will I notice something big or is it just small bug fixes? And I read something about times in the morning and evening. Does that mean I can only play it during those times? Or is that just when they're tracking stuff? I'm really confused.

Dumb question: How did you get in the Inside program for MCC?

I believe it's open to everyone now, but it takes a couple days to get access. It will show up in the insider app.

Thank you, that's informative. I think I'll hold off though, I'm looking forward to the huge update, and already in the Insider Program, but I doubt I'd be contributing much trying it out now.

I think I fucked up bad, you guys.

So I recently (as in, a couple weeks ago now) started working through the Halo CE LASO playlist. Made it through POA and Halo without too much trouble, but Truth and Reconciliation has been brutal. I've spent at least a week or two trudging through this level, made it to the Keyes escort, and tried the typical time save trick of "kill all the marines and skip the end sequence."

    It didn't work.

So I have a checkpoint outside the sword elite room, and a pissed-off Keyes hanging out with me. The only saving grace is that for some bizarre reason, Keyes isn't actively shooting at me yet - but this appears to change randomly, for reasons I haven't entirely worked out. Sometimes walking back to the brig to get ammo/grenades will make him start shooting me. Sometimes it won't. Sometimes I can clear the elites and the ensuing wave of grunts without him going aggro, but sometimes I can't. So on top of trying to keep his dumb grenade-happy ass alive and away from the covenant, I have to deal with him randomly shooting me in the back.

I've worked out a few interesting things so far.

    1) If I drop all the invisible sword elites, since there are no more marines, there's no dialogue sequence. Instead the doors immediately open when the last elite is dropped and grunts rush in. This means that tactic A is to drop all the elites with the sniper from outside the room, and then try to clean up the grunts while using the door for cover.

    2) If I drop the two elites on the far side of the room and then sneak into the far corner, the locked door opens when Keyes gets close. My guess is that because he's registering as an enemy, the door is opening for him. I've been able to rush through the door and get to the final sequence where you push the dropship button - but I have to pass through a loading section, and that invariably seems to trigger Keyes to go aggro. His weapon of choice is the fucking grenade.

    Any ideas?

I still have a deep loathing for Truth and Reconciliation, along with The Library, trying to complete them alone on the hardest difficulty--without any other handicaps.

Ok, so with some further experimentation, and a little help from Rockslider, I have something of a plan for getting past this.

I sat there with the game running and after 12.5 minutes, Keyes changed from an enemy to an ally. The obvious way to tell is to keep the assault rifle pointed at him; when the reticle turns from red to blue be stops being pissed. Didn't have a lot of time to mess around tonight, but one promising strategy is to snipe the two elites on the far side of the bridge, then sneak over to the corner with Keyes still in "enemy" mode. The door on the far side opens, at which point we can hide in the hallway until he stops being mad. Then I just need to get past the final set of enemies at the level end switch.

    Tedious, but doable!

Don't forget you can load it up after it's downloaded a few gigs, and then go into the options and tell it to not download a particular campaign or mulitplayer. (I saved 20 gigs by opting out of the multiplayer download)

The Halo 2 campaign alone is like 40 gigs! Is that all HD video or something?

Played some game tonight in Halo 2, Halo 2 Anniversary, and Halo 3. Populations seemed much bigger, was finding matches instantly. Kind of sad my ranks got reset though.

They actually fixed it. Me and a buddy spent 7 hours the other day running Halo 3 Legendary, and then into MP for instant constant matches.

Finally got around to trying Halo: The Arcade Game. Very good for a on-rails mounted shooter. Visuals are easily past the competition, but don't hold up next to Halo on an XB1X. It's not too easy either, though it's still fairly forgiving.

Have you ever played Halo 5, or really any entry in the franchise, and thought, "You know, I enjoy the brain-ratting sound of gunfire and violence, but this game, as a product, as far too polished, easy-to-pick up, and approachable and free of bugs? I played MCC the week of launch, and laughed at complaints--I want a game that will literally keep me from playing it at all years after release. I'm only interested in the premise of a battle royale game mode if it comes with the promise of drowning this franchise in PUBG-on-PC style bugs, crashing, and cheating. I want to use a mouse-wheel driven menu to pilot a vehicle, with the option to use KBAM, thereby flying it into a smoldering crater immediately after takeoff."

Because we may have the game for you.

Joking aside, that's actually really cool, and goes into an area I've long wanted to see explored in the franchise (intra-human conflict). And I still play the exceeding-complex-and-frequently-broken bag of bones that is Arma 3. Sign me up!

Just played two matches of slayer in 5 and man, the combo of the BPR and the pistol is everything I want it to be. A half second of pew-pew to strip shields, an instant to swap weapons, and then a round in their dome, altogether taking less time than if I'd just used one weapon. I need to play this game more often. I've probably played it less than Titanfall 2 but I have even more fun. I shouldn't be finding out about stuff like this years after release.

With Reach soon-to-be added, ODST Firefight is the only major omission from MCC. Hopefully 343i gets on that.

I'm so excited for Reach. It's far from my favorite Halo game, but I'll happily play through it again. I'm sure it'll look gorgeous in higher resolution.

Reach is really pretty with just the Xbox 360 resolution. Seeing the opening cutscene of Exodus in higher res will be lovely.

Curious to see how moddable these will be. These may be releasing a bit late in their life to warrant new content from modders unless they sell extremely well, but I am curious about the possibility of (for example) playing Halo 1 maps in Halo 3 multiplayer.

At the very least I am looking forward to replaying the campaigns with mouse and keyboard, and being able to play some Halo 3 Rocket Race again. Plus it is technically the first time any of these games are releasing on PC since PC never got the Anniversary Editions of Halo 1 and 2.

I would think generally not moddable (and I say this as an huge advocate of modding, and indeed mod support is a major reason for a majority of my PC purchases nowadays). MCC, obviously, has a substantial online component which will discourage (or flat-out forbid) certain types of modding. Of course, you're going to have access to MCC own Forge tools (which aren't as elaborate as those in 5, but are still more elaborate than every other console FPS ever made).

But I could certainly be wrong. Even the Windows Store version of FFXV had some basic mod support (once the tools were released). Plus, you'll obviously have KBAM support if that's what you want (having played both CE and 2 with KBAM years ago, as well as some basic tooling in Forge, it's not something I'd really seek to repeat).

I played a lot of Halo 1 PC multi, hopefully the PC exclusive maps come along for this. I even bought a keyboard and mouse adapter for Xbox for playing Halo 2 on Xbox Live. Been wanting to replay the series, having never finished the Reach or 4 campaigns. I have MCC on Xbox One but I rarely use the console so I'm good with waiting for the PC releases. Also having access to multiplayer without needing Live will be a nice bonus.

If Halo: Infinite doesn't get a simultaneous PC release I would not be shocked to see Halo 5 get added to MCC around the time of release or shortly before.

It's hard to believe Infinite (as de facto Halo 6) will not get a simultaneous Xbox/PC release.

Gears of War 4, Sea of Thieves and Forza 7, just to use a few examples, were simultaneous PC releases, and more importantly, cross-platform games by virtue of being integrated into Xbox Live (with no subscription fee since Microsoft "subsidizes" individual game multiplayer on its PC store). It's hard to imagine Halo Infinite won't be the same (or Halo 5 if/when it comes to PC), since Microsoft has already implemented that standard across a few dozen multiplayer-compatible Play Anywhere titles (plus there are a few exceptions of games that are not Play Anywhere, but still use Xbox Live).

Obviously, MCC on the Windows Store will work that way. I'm not sure about MCC on Steam though. I assume it will still be on Xbox Live? If not...that doesn't bode well for the multiplayer population, if the immediate and very sharp decline in multiplayer populations for multi-platform shooters that aren't specific Call of Duty titles (which don't include any recent ones) suggest. It's not guaranteed, of course, but MCC multiplayer separated from XBL would probably mean a very small population by comparison, divided up between +4 games and dozens of game modes.

That being said, that doesn't effect singleplayer.

I don't think 5 will get added to the MCC. In a way, it's "too big" of a game, and would be easy to release as a separate title. Halo 5 Forge isn't going to be integrated into MCC either. But that's just my suspicions on the matter.

  • Options
    eelektrikeelektrik Southern CaliforniaRegistered User regular
As far as multiplayer population on PC goes it won't be a problem at first because they are starting with just Halo: Reach. Unless like you said they stupidly split Windows Store and Steam multiplayer pools. In the long run Reach on PC might maintain the largest population by virtue of releasing first.

With each subsequent release I hope they are smart and release the multiplayer free to anyone that bought Reach(or any other initial campaign purchase) if they are selling the campaigns one by one. That way the multi-game playlists can assume everyone has access instead of splintering the playerbase by the number if combinations of MCC games people might own or restricting playlists to single games.

    (She/Her)

I expect buying MCC on PC will buy everything, so there's no split populations to worry about.

For Xbox, they announced Reach multiplayer will be free for everyone.

It sounded like each game within the MCC is going to be released over time as opposed to all at once. Wonder what that means for pricing...hopefully I don't have to buy five full-priced games separately. Can't wait to get up to some co-op nonsense once it comes out though! Halo was my first couch co-op game.

So is the general consensus is that Reach is the best Halo?

Because people seem to be losing their shit over Reach being included.

Yeah, I seriously doubt anyone who's thirsty (Hello fellow internet kids, I too am a kid.) for MCC multiplayer on PC is that desperate for...what? Steam comms, chat and matchmmaking? Maybe throw in some friends list linking if that's not already a thing. On top of that, Xbox Live cross platform between PC and console works really, really good for first-party games (which...are the bulk of them). Much better than I would expect. Though it's not like Steam is tripping over itself to advertising its console compatibility either, I didn't remember Steam and PS3 had that functionality in one or two games, and I owned both platforms and a game that used them.

And for MCC singleplayer it matters even less. Though I can understand wanting to organize things into a specific storefront and interface (where Windows gaming on PC is very fragmented between competing launchers, increasingly so).

But this is speculation. I'm hoping for a good PC implementation even though I won't be buying the series again. Gears of War 4 and Sea of Thieves both have very good PC ports, but we still get sloppy ones (looking at you, Nier: Automata) from time to time. Forza Horizon 4's PC port is excellent, but wasn't bug free at launch, despite the experience from FH3. I'm a little skeptical of things like +60 framerate support (also due to multiplayer logic) compared to more mundane stuff like ultrawide monitor resolution. I doubt you're going to get much more visual flourish, but it's not like Halo 2 Anniversary isn't already a gorgeous game on XB1X. Hopefully stability is good, especially with all that singleplayer scripting, I remember Halo 2 on PC had occasional issues with that back in the day. Besides, I'm such a combat vehicle whore that I'd basically need to keep a gamepad within reach if I was playing any Halo multiplayer, and I still laugh at the memory of how bad people were in Halo 2 PC multiplayer using vehicles if they were using KBAM instead of the Xbox 360 gamepad (or something similar). I remember you could tell instantly who they were, the same way you can tell instantly who in Battlefield is flying a plane or driving an armored car without a gamepad (right before they turn into a crater or drive into a ditch).

It was the last good Halo/Last Bungie Halo so it's nostalgic for a lot of folks. In fact I just felt old when I realized it's been 10 years since the Reach beta I remember so fondly.

It also had Invasion, which is a great PvP mode, and since a lot of folks skipped ODST, it was a lot of folks introduction to Firefight mode

I certainly don't think so, not even close. Halo 3 doesn't have AI companions who drive themselves off cliffs and vanish from the gamespace, thereby breaking the level progression (hope you didn't autosave).

In fact, technically, no other Halo games had that. Reach also leads in "Likelihood of player being killed by friendly fire", which is a dubious honor at best.

That being said, Reach's multiplayer wasn't nearly as unpolished, and sharing a Spartan between single and multiplayer was darn nifty. It's not my favorite Firefight mode, but it's still fun. And the most interesting parts of the story aren't conveyed in a completely optional radio play that the player could completely miss, which is good thing.

Reach is possibly the buggiest Halo. But it's absence was still felt, and I can understand why people are happy for its inclusion, especially as a gift of sorts. Reach wasn't in MCC for a very obvious and clear reason--but we eventually got ODST, so I'm not the least bit upset that a massive multi-game "anthology" platform is getting another edition.

I don't think that's the case because someone else actually described Kat's bad driving breaking a level way better than I did the last time we discussed it.

So it is a problem. Game breaking? Probably not, but that's up to the player and player experience. And there's no reason why it wouldn't be game when considering one's favorite entry into the series.
