Thinking about it some more, they've showed off this cover system already, and yeah, it seems to be that you stick to corners, boulders, etc.
There's a chance it could feel like Gears if you can pop up or blind fire spells, but I doubt that will be the case. And from looking at the dodging animations, the cover is probably just as snappy instead of the "stop and pop" that Gears is usually known for. I imagine you'll only pop into cover to avoid attacks, then pop back out and try to move into melee range.
Remember the re-reveal trailer with Noctis running and jumping through that dining room, dodging that watery stuff? He and his crew take cover a few times there. I know that was conceptual/target render/proof of concept/bullshot, but still, the idea's been around before just now. And the end of one of the trailers shows Noctis sticking to a corner to hide from a Behemoth.
And they've already showed off destructible stuff. Temporary, destructible cover might be a thing.
I do understand the distinction, and I apologize if it sounded like I was downplaying your informative explanation.
I was just saying that you could meld both lines of thought into FFXV without exclusively following one genre's mechanics over the other. People are quickly rolling their eyes thinking this is just a Gears of War/third person shooter thing whereas I'm being slightly more optimistic in noting that it could be closer to the mechanics found in FFXIV.
So yeah, in simplistic terms it's still about hiding behind something so you don't die. But there's ways to make that contextually interesting in an Action RPG atmosphere.
If nothing else I would love it if the cover could be destroyed. Like someone sets a tree on fire or a Behemoth rams into a rock and flings it across the field.
I don't see the cover system in Gears of War as a negative thing. I'm not a huge fan of the game but one thing it did well was have a cover system that really played towards a very cinematic feeling for the player. This is something that the LoS system in FFXIV does not do. So in that regard I would prefer they avoid something closer to the very simple mechanics in FFXIV as I don't feel that would really serve the style of game they seem to be trying to create.
I mean I love FFXIV, and it does a lot of things right, but the LoS system is not really something to strive for in a console action RPG game, there are many many ways to do it a lot better than a system designed for a more limited combat engine.

Hopefully, it'll at least be better than AC Unity's cover system hahaha just kidding it couldn't possibly be worse
Oh my God the shit is so bad in that game that it makes me temporarily forget the other shit that shit game does.
That game is a trainwreck and the series is considerably lower in my radar. At least my faith in Final Fantasy is steadily renewing, even though it too had to reach a low point to begin with.

The latest trailer shows the group taking cover behind a rock to avoid an explosion. It's in a cutscene, but it's there!
Kind of weird that Noctis, as powerful as he's been portrayed, might take cover. But whatever, it's the same as it's been for the last several years: Wait and see.
There's also the most recent trailer that shows the group hiding behind some rocks to avoid getting burned by what appears to be a huge burst of fire (Ifrit?).
I imagine there will be cover/escape situations like this where you have to just run and avoid damage until you reach the boss. I got this vibe from the iced-up train as well; I can imagine that being a scripted moment where you have to quickly huddle your way past the frozen train and maybe find ways to warm you up.
This recalls some of the early impressions from the E3 2013 trailer where people claimed it looked like they had inserted Uncharted into FF.
Frankly, I'm all for that, provided they can strike a good balance. The old FMV sequences of classic FFs were essentially the same idea: big epic set pieces where you have little control. If they find a way to incorporate that intro realtime while not creating the jarring effect that FMV transitions did, then we're onto something special here.
It's not a shooter, there's literally no way they could reasonably use a Gears of War style system. If "cover" is a poor descriptor, it's easily chalked up to "lost in translation."
Here's what gets me: there's no car, but there is Cidney, who is supposed to be strictly your car's mechanic. I can't help but read that as a "PLEASE BUY THIS GAME, CHECK OUT THIS CLEAVAGE, WE HAVE ALL OF IT." Judging too early etc, but still.

Or I mean maybe you go to her garage and meet her but you don't get to drive the car in the demo. There's a lot of room for her being in the demo without that. And frankly, Final Fantasy, even with a game that's been in development for a decade does not need to try to sell people on tits. They just don't.

Considering the way certain characters are portrayed in some games versus their portrayal on others, there clearly are people at Square who feel that they must pander with tits.
Also I woudn't count on Tabata being entirely classy given the material in both Type-0 and The Third Birthday, both which were under his direction.

I really think people are being too quick to shit on Cidney just because of her design.
It's true that there are issues with her outfit, and it's also true that she's been designated as not being terribly important to the story, but I think it's really unfair and kind of shitty that people are already writing her off as being inserted into the game just for eye candy.
One of my all-time favorite characters continues to get that criticism from much of the fanbase, so I'm at least willing to see how Cidney is portrayed in the game itself before coming to that conclusion.

That makes me wonder all the more why they are then.
In the end it entirely depends on the people in charge of each game/project.
In Advent Children there are several comments about how much care they took to make Tifa's design appealing without pandering to a specific trait, and also took care in her mannerisms and speech so she wouldn't appear timid. The movie never once zooms in on her chest or makes her wishy-washy around Cloud. It's as equal a representation as you could ever ask for with the two principal (and most popular) characters in that series.
Then in Dissidia someone wanted to have her jiggle and have players notified of this in the tutorial and it's just really unfortunate considering all the cool shit she can do in the game.
And it's especially baffling because of how popular the character is at this point. It's like Lara Croft 2013: they knew they didn't have to stick to the gigantic chest anymore because the character had already achieved iconic status. You want to add the occasional cheesecake once in a while, that's fine, but you don't have to lower yourself to such a specific bid for attention.
Maybe they think Cidney is a great character and a badass and they want to introduce players to her in the demo? It's ridiculous to me to be like well she's the car mechanic so if there's no car in the demo surely they can't put her in there!
Also considering how much they've talked about how they're polishing FFXV based on feedback, it's entirely possible they could modify Cidney's design.
Then again the reception from Japan seems to be mostly positive, so I suppose it's a matter of which side is loudest.
Honestly they wouldn't have to change much; keep the cleavage or the short shorts, but not both. More than anything I would prefer she not have her cleavage out while she's operating underneath a car. That shit ain't sanitary.
how much does japan's reception matter when none of them are buying consoles, though
Well Japan tends to be a bit insane when it comes to buying consoles for just one game. I believe the XBox 360 got the highest sales of its entire lifespan in Japan when they released Tales of Vesperia.
A similar thing could happen to FFXV, so they're probably taking Japan's feedback very seriously.

Dunno, I'm not a big car buff but isn't the image of a bunch of dudes without shirts working on cars a thing? I doubt sanitation comes into the imagery much at all in that respect if your goal is to perpetuate a stereotype.
Not saying that's going on here mind you, but logic often gets left behind on this sort of thing is all.

Hah, I hadn't even seen Cidney's short shorts because every screenshot I've seen of her has been rudeass tittays.
Maybe she'll be a great character. Then I can be even more mad about her gross design. :P

Actually there is one exception: it's the fact that she loses in her one major fight in the movie, because the team just couldn't resist the urge to let Cloud beat all four bad guys by himself.

That... woulda been way better actually. Show the other party members being more than a match for the other remnants, emphasizing that there's something wrong with Cloud.
But then I guess ya gotta contrive some other way for Loz to get the materia. :P

True. It's just, her design is so bad that it kind of blew any confidence I had in them handling her well. Just my personal opinions, obviously that may change when I play the game.
What's sad is that it wouldn't take that much creativity to make a design that's fun and spunky and feminine but also communicates "I'm a competent mechanic." Hell, keep the curves. But this design is nothing but HI I AM A BOOB-HAVER AND I'D LIKE YOU TO LOOK AT THEM.
zuru zuru zuru zuru sounded cute until Junji Ito ruined onomatopoeia forever
I never really knew what it meant, even localized. At best I gathered it was something like "blah blah blah", the context being "stop your whining, Cloud."
Man, those are some plain, low detail environments. Remind me why this is on PS4 and not Vita, again?
Because Square want people to have more reasons to have PS4s and XB1s, which increases the potential market for their decade long developmentally-challenged money sink, FFXV.
I was needing some Dragon Quest and downloaded 3 on the iPad because it's probably been the longest since I've played that one. Apparently all the random themes I'll whistle around the house are from that one. I had completely forgotten. The overhaul they gave it really looks nice and the orchestration of the music has only intensified my need for the new Theatrhythm.

I think the part that bugs me the most about her design is that with a couple of simple shifts (maybe lengthen the shorts some) and then throw on like a tanktop over the bra and it works fine. Keep the jacket, I actually really like the jacket.
Though i do agree that I'm gonna keep my final judgement until I play the game, she could be awesome.
