"It is hard" isn't really a compelling argument. They charged me 70 bucks for an old PSP game so I am going to go ahead and say they should have maybe put the work in to not have one of the worst cameras I've ever seen in a game.

A camera so bad it's making a lot of people physically unable to play the game.

It's not like you can just take an open game back for a full refund if it literally makes you sick.

That comic. I am slain. Please tell me there's even more of these.

Stjepan Šejić (& Linda Luksic Sejic) might not be my absolute favorite comic artist (I personally really love the work of Andrea Sorrentino, Fiona Staples, and others) but they're damn talented and man do I enjoy their sense of humor.

Never again will I think of FF8 without Quistis hilariously traumatising Squall. Hopefully Stjepan will be inspired to do more FF comics if he's just acquired a PS Vita and is having a big nostalgia session.

Here's a good article on the technical aspects of the port that you should read before saying that they couldn't be bothered to fix it or whatever. We're talking porting a game from the PSP, with PSP assets, etc to the latest gen. Not a simple project by any means.

You're right though, that was a pretty good article. It does not, however, help your point at all.

    ...

At no point does it seem to suggest that the level of motion blur that is making people sick (the point I have been hammering over and over and over again) was anything but a stylistic choice, not a technical limitation. I said earlier, yes, I understand the need for it because it's locked to 30 fps, but we've established that seems to be beyond the point of where it needs to be.

In any case, I'm tired of arguing this. Type-0 went from a game I wanted to a game I wouldn't legitimately get to play to a game I didn't want to play to a game that I (finally, again) wanted to play but couldn't and now I don't want to anymore (again) and that's just where I'm going to leave it. There's really no point, especially when things just get more and more clubhouse-y in here as they have been and I'm sure will continue to do so.

There's nothing to be had from arguing your first quote of me as it's clear that we're going at squares and circles... so I'm not going to.

As for the latter, the point that I was trying to make was their port wasn't some simple project and even the motion blur that makes you ill was built by design; to the devs there was nothing to fix. Given how common motion sickness is, it even stands to reason that they were aware of the possibility of the effect causing issues and set it to a level that they felt would impact the least amount of people. But the suggestion that the blur is in the game because the devs were lazy or apathetic is untrue. They put a lot of work into the project, and the choice they made on the matter of the level of blur simply wasn't ideal for many. The author of the article acknowledges this too.

"It's an attractive effect, but..." he says there, and even goes on to state in the caption (4/4) of the comparison images "We quite like the effect but an option to reduce it during camera rotation would be welcome. I don't think anyone has stated that the blur is completely awesome as is, nor has anyone said that they would object to having the option to adjust either camera sensitivity or the blur itself. Unfortunately it's highly unlikely that they'll add either in, so I'm sorry you won't be able to play it.

Japanese development is weird sometimes. Or maybe it's a global thing? But more than once I've seen games where, whether intentionally or not, many important game functions are wired directly to the framerate. And if you increase it via modification or whatnot, then shit gets crazy.

I know I posted this before, but I can't remember which thread.

I compared the camera controls on the PSP and the PS4. Not the lock-on camera behavior, and not the blur. Just controlling the camera. The PSP version uses the d-pad, and the PS4 uses the right stick.

The camera control is similar on both platforms. Velocity and lack of acceleration seem the same. It's very likely the camera control functionality was transplanted from the PSP d-pad to the PS4 right stick.

On PSP, it's difficult to use the d-pad to control the camera while moving (The Claw is always an option, of course). Camera control is really only there to be used when you are standing still. Almost all on-the-go camera manipulation is done with the R button, which engages lock-on when held, and centers the camera when pressed.

On PS4 though, the right stick is right there, begging to be used to look around while running. This is where things get dicey. The camera seems to have an auto-center function, and that combined with the digital input means the player feels like they have to fight the camera in order to look around. Add in the motion blur, and some people need to put the controller down, or feel like they can't play the game.

    That sucks.

So I suggest an admittedly dumb workaround that shouldn't be necessary, but I've found it helps. Play it like a PSP game. Don't use the camera controls. If you want to move the camera while running, center it behind you and that's it. If you're on PS4, remap the Center Camera button from R3 to R2 or L2, which are normally unused. I think the game plays very smoothly this way, and I don't think the lack of camera control hinders me. It's how the PSP version was designed, after all.

    Hope this helps.

Yeah, it's more of a global/design specific thing.

edit: Renzo, the blur kicks up the most when dodging or strafing, so that wouldn't really work. The camera is actually analog when you're being still too,at least on the Xbox One. This of course is overridden by making hard fast movements.

It has nothing to do with Japan, this is how all games are made, though some game engines 'abstract it out' so it's not a consideration. It's possible that more Japanese games tend to build their own engines while Western games are using Unreal or built in something like Unity, but if a game has animations - of any sort - it's tied to framerate under the hood.

I don't know how ingrained this was with FF Type-0, but there's a good chance they are counting frames for things like random battles and kill/breaksights, so they'd basically be gutting a lot of the game if they wanted to aim for 60FPS - which is typically not something consoles are known for anyway. If you want perfect, scalable graphics, you really want to be looking at the PC.

As far as the blur, it was extremely jarring and I posted as much with my initial impressions like ~40 pages ago. However my eyes and brain got used to it after a couple hours of playing and now it's fine. I think some of the battle was adjusting where my eyes look on the screen - if you focus on the spinning backgrounds obviously you're going to get dizzy, but your character is in focus at all times.

Designing games to framerate is generally a bad idea if you're going across multiple systems or especially on PC (old PC games are infamous for becoming nigh unplayable as computers got more advanced; for a time, people used slowdown apps alongside old games, apps that did nothing but eat up system resources). But if you're building for one console system (or a couple even), you can build your game into the framerate (which is easier) because the hardware is never going to change.

This of course creates problems when you port, but when you're making the original game, if the choice comes down to decoupling from framerate or fixing important bugs / finishing important features, it's pretty clear which way they're going to go with it.

SE in particular really loves keeping animations tightly glued to game mechanics. They won't skip frames*, and they rarely let gameplay functions fire separately from animation. This gives their games a really weighty feel (which is doubly important for action games like Type-0). But they even do this in their more traditional RPGs (FFX-2, FFXII, FFXIII), which leads to some balance quirks at times (infamously, Fran and Balthier being the worst characaters for bows and guns thanks to extra visual care lengthening their attack animations).

    * Not recently anyway. Original PC ports of FF7 and FF8 were happy to skip frames.

I am enjoying the hell out of Type-0. I love all of the new concepts it has introduced, and I think the story manages to pull off a truly dark and hopeless atmosphere that is rarely seen in the series. The story may have a similar approach to FFXIII's as far as as world building goes, but I feel it's handled a whole lot better and intentional in a few areas. It continues to go to some interesting places, and I'm invested enough in the cast that I'm hoping they'll make it out alright (but dread that they might not).

However, the motion blur really is awful and requires a pretty big tolerance. There are a couple of areas, particularly the library and HQ room, where it's borderline impossible to stomach. I don't blame people who say they can't play it, because it's really bad. That's why I want to emphasize how much I enjoy the game in spite of the camera problems. Just like you have a cast of respectable and ass-kicking ladies and one very pandering fanservice character. The positives outweigh the negatives.

But even though I can stomach it, I'm rather infuriated at Square; this doesn't feel like an oversight, it feels like disrespect. Like at a certain point during the remastering process they stopped and decided "Eh, good enough". There was a time when anything that had the Final Fantasy name to it would receive the best possible technical polish. The kind of cracks present in Type-0 would never be as visible as they are.

So now instead of letting everyone get the chance to experience one of the best things to have the words "Final Fantasy" written on it, they go and exclude a potentially large chunk of their audience while also leaving themselves open to further heckling.

In the end it just proves that Square still has a long, long way to go.

I haven't noticed the motion blur myself, so I'm going to check it out tonight and see I've been holding off of Type-0 to finish XIII (yep, still working on it). I picked up Record Keeper over the weekend, so thank you to whoever plugged it first. I checked out the Japanese site and it's impressive with both its depth and girth. I couldn't link directly to the wiki, but if anyone wants some info from it I'll do my best to translate.

So, Record Keeper. Apparently were on patch 2 from the original JP release -- that lowered the stamina regen to 3 minutes (now the industry standard) and added synergy (So FF4 heroes and gear get bonuses in FF4 maps).

They are also apparently going to follow the original JP schedule, so
    Sephiroth
will be added in about a month.

I know people are probably going to slam him for that line, which I personally think is a bit unfair since it's not necessarily wrong or offensive at face value.

I'm much more concerned about the "there's a chance that we may" comment. Unless they're really keeping the Stella scenario closely guarded to their chest, then this may be just a shoehorned band-aid where they have Cindy follow you around for a quest or two, which wouldn't even begin to placate people.

I'm still hoping for a large variety of guest characters, male or female or Quina even. All these "maybe we'll do this" comments are not encouraging.

I've never been much of a fan of guest characters in FF games anyway, assuming they're talking about like Larsa joining you to run around for a little while in FF12. I guess we'll see what they do, but just having female characters guest for a little while is not going to satisfy people who want the game to have playable women.

I like Larsa and Vossler, and I guess I shouldn't say I don't like the sections where you have them, but more that it'll never be a replacement for full characters in your party. That is to say, having a guest female character in FFXV is not going to satisfy anybody's desire for an actual cool female character in the party.

Well... yea, if a person wants to be offended at a thing, they will be offended, that's just human nature.

Even 8-bit Final Fantasy 2 had guest characters, so it's not that far fetched that this one will have a guest character or two. As far as I can recall they all had them. Could be wrong, don't really feel like fact checking that.

The use of a possibility allows him to make a statement without outright violating any NDAs or whatever. It also avoids teh spoilers, since a lot of people are particularly obsessed with avoiding spoilers.

Solved it. I took level 26 Ace alone, since AI party members kept getting killed. He had the Laser Shot, MP deck, and Avoid equipped.

Basically I would watch for the red eyes of the dragon, and run to the opposite end of the area. As soon as she charges her breath attack, hold down the Avoid ability, and the AI will dodge forward with perfect timing. After 3 breath attacks, back away from the dragon, since she will land on the platform and kill you if she crushes you. Lock on and lay into her with the Laser and normal attacks, as she will be in a constant state of Breaksight. After she gets up, use the MP deck to refill your mana, then run away and start from the stop. She didn't change her strategy at any point.

After she gets up, use the MP deck to refill your mana, then run away and start from the stop. She didn't change her strategy at any point.
So... you killed her with just Ace? Does that mean he didn't see Bahamut Zero?

Should I retry it and just kill off all my characters? I don't know who Bahamut Zero is.

I put down Bloodborne and went back to Type-0, heading into the Togoreth recapture mission... still not seeing anything NG+ related. Maybe it's after that?

    Edit: Oh shit.

So yeah, that ending for Type-0
    :(

Though I didn't get too much more from Chapter Truth afterwards, other than that its apparenlty a cycle, some people were left out, and Class Zero asked for something from Dr. Arecia.

Well, got Tifa. Not sure how good she is as it used all of my Stamina getting to her, but at least the tower is VII themed so I can level her quickly.

Hrm, has anyone else encountered issues with the sound randomly dropping out while playing type-0?
