Woo!
I wasn't really watching, just had the stream on in the background, but he seemed like a genuine, earnest dude and his emotion at getting the WR was touching.

I love the preposterously tiny menu text from Quake 1/2 menus when played at modern resolutions. Because of course those engines supported those resolutions 20 years ago when no screen on Earth could produce them but they weren't gonna deal with scaling the menus for them, fucking menus man.
They might not have supported large resolutions, that might be a thing added in the source ports they're running. Modern resolution support is often a feature that source ports add. But I think he ran the original engine to play the ending cinematic and the menu was still tiny so maybe quake 2 did originally support large resolutions.
So anything I missed from about 10pm last night until now that I should really try and go back to watch?

I'm really enjoying this run. Even apart from my love for PJ, the run is entertaining and this is probably the best developer call I've heard in GDQ history. They're usually awkward, but these devs are fun.

depends on if you particularly like any of the games they ran during that period I guess. I think they did something interesting with pokemon red but I'm not sure what, I missed it.

Eeeeh none of the games really leap out at me. I saw the pokemon thing, and honestly right now this current game is pretty fun.
this game seems like a basically competent 2d mario clone but there's nothing else there to spice it up beyond the touhou skin
there doesn't seem to be much to speedrunning it beyond "doing the game normally" which is kind of boring
I think the guy running it is the one who brought a touhou character plush a few years ago so I guess touhou games are his thing? the actual touhou games would be more interesting to watch than this, but they don't really lend themselves to speedrunning so I guess they don't fit at a games done quick event.

if there's a game I want to see I'm willing to wait until it gets to youtube
like, REALLY brown
It's actually way less brown than Quake 1.
Sometimes its all grey instead.
It was the late 90s and no games looked like that yet.
Bunch of games just straight xeroxed Quake 2's everything, though.
no games looked like what yet?
It's such a Carmack thing.
Like generic sci-fi shooters.
Or, well, like fully 3D shooters, mostly.
So much pure speed.

what's that got to do with it being a strange art direction decision?
Uh the context of that decision has everything to do with it. It looked cool at the time and was easy to make look cool using few polygons.
I disagree that it ever looked cool but that's just my opinion, so whatever
it just seems like bad or lazy texture art to me, compared to, say, doom 2

was it ridiculous y/n
in GX when falcon races god or whatever did they give god a head start like last year

the stream went down for like 10 minutes when they started that game, I was just making a lame touhou joke
that sounds badass
