As for "best class" for retainers, it's a bit tricky. I have one of each (you can get 2 additional for a monthly fee through the cash shop, and I'm a hoarder) battle/mining/botany/fisher and the 2 most profitable on my server are mining & fisher. Mining gives shards, crystals, ore, fisher for sharks and oysters. But, like ForceVoid mentioned, they can only level a class you have leveled, so you can't have your retainer level up as fishing if you haven't leveled fishing yet. If you haven't leveled any gathering classes yourself you can always pick up mining or botany and use it to collect shards; It wont level up but they definitely are profitable.
The battle classes are easy to gear out since you can give them your old combat gear, all the classes gather the same things so you can just pick whatever class your main is. One thing to note (since I'm a derp and totally didn't think about it): They only get a class and not a job, so don't do what I did and make it an Arcanist and think it can wear your old Scholar/healing gear. Oops! :rotate:
Melding levelling gear isn't quite recommended. It can give you a slight edge but yeah, you tend to upgrade your gear rather quickly, doubly so if you have access to high level crafters that can pop out HQ gear with no effort.
There is one exception that I'll advise and that's level 40 tanking gear. I always recommend that some accuracy is melded onto that stuff esepcially the body seeing how it can last until 50 (may be a bit more difficult now with grade 2 materia prices going all crazy). Hitting Stone Vigil without extra accuracy at level 41 can get really rough since there's a reasonable miss chance, which will completely screw up your threat generation. When you have level synched party members breathing down your neck scrabbling to kill stuff as quickly as possible, you kinda don't want to miss your combos.
Grade 2 materia typically sell really well as the supply for them isn't as high as the grade 3s.
The FC house is a good home point. A lot of the FC members hang out around there, it's an ideal meeting place and it does have some nice facilities. Retainer access, MB access at a short walk away, armoire access, basic crafting supply vendors, dyes and dark matter vendors, repair NPCs, target dummies and a pretty snazzy interior decoration.
The only equipment that is maybe worth melding while leveling is some jewelry, and some belts. Since those tend to go 10ish levels between upgrades. Even then, it's probably a wash.
As far as gathering Materia, you get that from getting your gear to 100% spirit bonding, and then turning it into Materia. It's random as to what you'll create, but it's usually something to do with the kind of gear it started out as. The Materia's level will be dependent on the gear when it's transformed. 1-10 is Materia I, 11-20 is Materia II, and so on up to IV.
Though maybe they'll introduce Materia V with the level cap increase.
So, how does one convert gear into material? I did the materia quest right at the end of my free play time in late January, and don't remember if they explained it or not

I think you can occasionally get grade 2s in the teens. It's not very common but it happens. Pulling a number out of my ass from back when I did SBing several months ago, maybe 2-5% of the time. At least that was with battle class gear, not gathering gear.
That quest should have explained it adequately. You can't convert/turn into materia all pieces of equipment. Typically all crafted items and aetherial gear (pink) can be converted and the validity is listed in the tooltips:
Once the Spiritbond hits 100%, you can right-click on the item or open the menu on the item and select Convert. That option will not appear if the spiritbond isn't at 100%
You can't desynth things that are non-convertible as well, right?
The two things are separate. Some things can be desynthed but not converted. Gear that drops in Syrcus tower is a good example. You can't convert it but you can Desynth it.

No, you can desynth things that are non-convertible otherwise it'll be rather difficult to level up Culinary desynth.... >.>
An item will have a tool-tip property if it can be desynthed.
Wow those Lodestone updates are REALLY nice. I can even check my linkshells outside the game now. Was that a thing before?
Yes, it's been there for a while...
I wish the event scheduler thingy lets you invite people to an event instead of having an open join or restricted to your friends list/FC.
What if I wanted to schedule an event that's not necessarily game related?
-MGP changes are coming. Minigames will give double the MGP now (lol)
-More MGP for higher ranked Chocobo Races. Also buffed EXP for those.
-Many more changes to Gold Saucer, please look forward to the patch notes.
-Magitek Mount will now get its own theme song, it's "that song" from FFVI. For best results get two friends and march together when it's snowing.

While I am super excited we're getting that song, I'm also just flat out surprised it took this long.
I mean when they had released that teaser video before the game launched I thought for sure the song was already in. Doubly so since they recorded a new version of that song just for the teaser. Seemed a waste.
Although, on a related note, I remember reading an interview with their main music guy and he mentioned that he has recorded a good number of tracks that have yet to actually be put in to the game for one reason or another.
Axen on
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Actually, the thing about unspoiled nodes, is the stuff on them is in the same position every time.
So you can just use a node tracking app or webpage, and only hit the row you want. Once you get your gathering up, it only takes one hit to clear.
http://ffxivclock.com/ is great to use, you can select what you want to gather and it gives you an alarm with zone and slot #. I like using box view so you can see a real time countdown to the next time the node will be available.
Suggestions for what I used before that website was a thing, and/or if you don't have a second monitor or don't want to tab out to a webpage-
I have a toolbar that's mapped to my numpad, so I put all the Ward skills (increases shard/crystal/cluster yield) on their corresponding slot # so I can remember where the cluster slots are: Lightning on 2, Fire on 3, etc. For other stuff I had echo macros in game with Eorzea time, zone and slot number, so something like
/echo 1am - CCH - Darksteel #3
/echo 9am - EThan - Gold Ore #6
etc. It get's a bit cumbersome with the 2/3/4 star nodes though, but it was perfect for 1 star.
I'm more excited for Terra's theme for magitek mounts more than anything else xD
