GOTY 2014 Poll: Nominations needed

Mr_GrinchMr_Grinch Registered User regular
edited January 2015 in Games and Technology
Every year since 2004 @mcc has done a fantastic Game of the Year poll on this forum. People seem to enjoy it when it happens so she's tried to keep doing it. This year she's decided to bow out for various understandable reasons but has kindly provided the software for us to run it ourselves anyway.

I have shamelessly stolen this op from last years nomination thread so forgive anything that still refers to 2013, or MCC running it

There are a lot of Game of the Year polls out there, but this one is special. Where most GOTY polls just give you a list of maybe five of the best-selling games from the last year, and ask you to choose your favorite, THIS poll gives you a list of EVERY game that came out in the last year (more or less) and asks you to vote for [up to] your top 20-- ranked by how much you liked them. Here's last year's poll if you want to see how this works. We actually wind up with a serviceable ranking of the top hundred or so games from the last year, with blockbusters, obscurities and cult hits mixed in side by side, and a pretty color-coded graph.

Here's the plan: We're taking nominations in this thread until the evening of January 7th (is that enough time? Too long? In the previous thread we already did a fair bit of work on it).

We'll then run the poll for one week, until the evening of January 14th. I'll post a thread back here (watch for it!) with the voting link.

So, let's get some nominations. Remember, the point of this is to have the most comprehensive list of games possible! So any game that anyone might POSSIBLY put in their top 20 deserves to go on the list.

The rules for nomination are:
* It must have been legally released IN AMERICA for the first time in 2014
* It must be a new game-- no ports, no expansion packs.
We can try to be flexible about these rules. But here's the underlying point of the rules: Every game gets one shot. Think about it, if this game you like got on one year, and then we snuck its expansion pack on the next year… half the people who liked it will vote one year and half the other and it will get really low scores. You like this game, but it's gonna get stiffed in the poll. Avoid that.

I made a starting list with massive, MASSIVE help from others, specifically @Undead Scottsman who has spent a crazy amount of time pruning the list that I ripped off of wikipedia to make sure it only contains stuff it should. Still though collectively we may have removed something that should be on there, or we may have included something that shouldn't be.

PS: If you want to make things REALLY easy for me, look over your nominations, punch their names into Wikipedia, and make *certain* that (1) you spelled them right (2) you list *exactly* the platforms it was released on this year in alphabetical order, like:
Bioshock Infinite (Android, 360, 3DS, DS, iOS, Ouya, PC, PS3, PS4, PSP, Vita, Wii, WiiU, XBO)

This year I've forgone marking if a game is download only. Mostly because I'm lazy.

Thanks for putting this on Mr. Grinch! I recommend Shadowrun: Dragonfall for the list.

    Added!

And I can't go taking all (or even a large portion) of the credit here:

    - @Undead Scottsman did far more of the grunt work on working out what should and shouldn't be on this list I just compiled it initially.
    - @Infidel is doing all the techy stuff to actually make it work when it comes to voting.
    - And of course @Mcc for all the previous years :)

    Got a couple to add

    Jazzpunk (PC)
    The Fall (PC)
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (PC, PS4, XBO)

Also, I've come to discover that Mount Your Friends originally came out in 2013 on Xbox Live Indie Arcade :( Though given how shitty the visibility on Xbox Indie stuff, I wouldn't be against being lax on that rule for this case.

Went through a quarter of the list checking platforms, came up with the following
1001 Spikes - Also on Vita, not on PS3
Agarest: Generations of War Zero - Released on X360 and PS3 in 2011 in North America
    Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed - Also on PS4
Alone in the Dark: Illumination - Missed 2014 release window!
Another World-20th Anniversary Edition - Also on 3DS, WiiU, and PC)
Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry - Originally Released December 2013? Though that may be for the non-standalone version, so I dunno how we want to count this. The "Everyone gets one chance" rule would suggest we count it)
Awesomenauts Assemble! - Relaunch of the 2012 Awesomauts on PS4 hardware
Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - Originally Released on Vita/3DS in 2013 (Whoops, I think I'm the one who made you add that too!)
Blade Symphony - I think this 2014 date is correct, but Metacritic disputes it. IGN, Gamespot and Wikipedia say it's correct though, so it should be fine
Broken Age Act 1 - Also on iOS
Colin McRae Rally - I think this was a 2013 release
Costume Quest 2 - Also on WiiU, X360 and XBO
CounterSpy - Also on iOS, Vita mispelled ;)
Crimsonland - Also on PS4 (and possibly a 2004 PC release)
Defense Grid 2 - PC listed twice :D
Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes - iOS/Vita versions not due out till 2015, I think?

Gonna take a break and do the next quarter.

You can remove Tales of Symphonia Chronicles and Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry. One's a port and the other was DLC. I would've voted for both, otherwise.

The list is missing Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

    Quarter 2
    Escape Goat 2 - Also on PS4

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions - Also on PC

Joylancer - Full name is "The Joylancer: Legendary Motor Knight"
KickBeat Special Edition - New version of a 2013 game; also available on PS4 and WiiU
    Loadout - Also on PS4

Also, I just noticed the source I was using doesn't list Droid and original Wii versions, so my info may not be entirely complete

Freedom Cry was released as DLC for Black Flag in 2013, but standalone in mid 2014. I vote it stays, as it'll otherwise go unrecognized.

Super Time Force also got a (late) PC release.

How do you guys wanna handle the jackbox for PS4, PS3 and PC (and maybe the X1 and 360, I didnt check yet...)

It's a collection of games, but I dont think you can get them individually anyway else (except Fibbage, although technically the pack is Fibbage XL, a new version...)

    The games included are:

    You Dont Know Jack 2015
    Fibbage XL
    Word Spud

But again - since they're not for sale individually, you'd have to buy the "Jackbox" game to run them. Much like you'd never really single out the games in Mario Party.

Either way - I vote they get included somehow, so I can cast a vote for Drawful.

IIRC, we split the Orange Box up into it's component parts back in 2007, and they weren't available separately until 2008.

Everything nominated has been added and all of @Undead Scottsman's updates applied. A couple of points:

    - I've added the Jackbox as separate games.
    - There seems to be enough people wanting to keep Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry on the list and with valid reasons, so I'm happy to do that unless there's massive opposition.
    - "Mount Your Friends" came out on the Xbox Indie Arcade in 2013 but really didn't get any coverage, and I don't think it was included on last year's list so again, happy to keep that included.
    - Oddworld: New 'n Tasty. Does this count as a remake? I was under the impression there was considerable new content but I haven't got around to playing it yet (it's on my list though, love the original).

Is Fibbage and Fibbage XL the same thing or should I add it as a different game?

Also I think for this year we'll leave the "Amazon Fire TV" out as a platform, just because (unless I'm mistaken) this is the only game we've got on the list at the moment. Maybe something to consider next year?

If anyone really wants it in then I'm happy to update the list if someone can let me know what games came out on it.

I think just listing it as Fibbage is fine.

The Fire TV is "just another" Android-based set top box, and I suspect almost everything that ever gets released on there will end up somewhere else, possibly eventually barring that weird Amazon Game Studios thing that they created. My guess is that we'll see a game or two like Towerfall that people will really pull for in the year that it is only available on the Fire TV.

Also, nominations (mostly just going through my phone and my email for things I have bought/installed):
Monument Valley (iOS, Android) (HOW DID WE MISS THIS?)
    Highrise Heroes (iOS, Android)
    Kingdom Rush Origins (iOS, Android)
    Bicolor (iOS)
    Monster Dash (iOS, Android)
    Secret Ponchos (PC, PS4)
    Final Horizon (PS Vita, PS4)
    The Hungry Horde (PS Vita)

    Off the list:
Peggle 2 (sadly, this was released for XB1 last year...it would be on my list if it were here)

Did we already debate The Binding of Isaac Rebirth? I would err on the side of it being a remaster and not include it, but would not be upset if it made the list.

Also, Wikipedia is saying Frozen Synapse Prime is a sequel? I had in my mind that it was a remake/port.

And what do we about Sportsfriends? It should probably be on this list, as well. Split it out like the Jackbox?

Do we count P.T. for PS4?

It is technically a stealth demo for "Silent Hills", but it may or may not actually be representative of Silent Hills at all, and I feel is a full-fledged game in it's own right.

It's not really a "demo" actually, it's more of a short game to tease the release of another game.

I vote that it gets counted, but I totally can see the other side of the argument as well.

I think it should count. It is a separate thing that probably won't appear in Silent Hills itself. I kind of view it like Dead Rising Case Zero.

Everything added, except Sportsfriends. Have any of the games appeared before? Joust and Hokra have been doing the rounds since 2012 but just at expos I believe so have likely never been included before.

Should I add the games separately on the list like Jackbox? Keep them in one listing (Sportsfriends) or exclude them entirely?

I've enjoyed each of the games personally so they'd be getting a vote from me.

Yeah, I'd agree. It adds a nice layer of polish, and some new enemies and items, but it's far from being a full on sequel. It's called "Rebirth," afterall.

Freedom Cry was both a 2013 release and a DLC for an existing game, so doesn't that fail both eligibility rules?

It CAN be bought as a standalone, and the standalone didn't come out until 2014. The question is whether the fact that it's also a DLC, and was DLC first, would make it ineligible.

It got a standalone release in 2014. Given it was DLC before, and therefore ineligible to be judged last year anyway, I can see a case being made of allowing it this year. I don't feel strongly either way though.

I'd be curious how people would rank that Freedom Cry compared to other games this year, since it was highly acclaimed. But then again I'd also be curious how compilations like Master Chief Collection would rank, even if they aren't exactly new.

KRZ actually was on last year's poll, and placed 20th overall. Republique also made it on to the voting list for last year's poll despite having only a single episode (on only one of its two intended platforms) released in the last couple days of December, though doesn't appear in the results because it got zero votes.

However, we probably should wait for episodic games to be either released in full or formally cancelled before putting them on the poll. D4 would be a consideration there. It only has 2 episodes released and it looks unlikely that it's going to get any more, but AFAIK there's no official word on it.

I feel where this thought is coming from; it's almost like the game got split in half. But each platform's half is pretty distinct. I can't rate the 3DS version on the same level as the WiiU version, and I haven't played the WiiU version nearly as much as I have the 3DS version.

I think enough people have said (in this thread and the previous) that they want Assassin's Creed: FC to appear that makes it worthwhile. After all, this is just some fun thing we do so we don't have to be toooo rigid with the rules.

Smash Bros - Happy to roll them in to one, I've only played the WiiU version so couldn't really comment. Any other opinions? Are they different enough to warrant separate entries?

Sportsfriends games - how about they're added as separate items but prefixed with Sportsfriends? Technically they're separate games but, honestly, if I were glancing down the list and saw "Johann Sebastian Joust" I'd probably forget it was a game I'd played. Maybe worth doing the same for Jackbox?

As @Monger points out, we have had KR0 in previous polls. Moreover, I think for some episodic games, we're not really following the rule, especially ones where the time between episodes is really long (KR0's first act came out in January 2012!). CONSORTIUM is ostensibly the first game in some sort of episodic thing but it's not clear if that's still going, and I think it makes more sense for people to vote on it while it's fresh. Broken Age is in the poll right now even though it's Act 1 of 2. With something like The Wolf Among Us that all comes out in a short span, it makes sense to wait until it's wrapped up even if this means bumping it to next year's poll, but I'm not sure it makes sense to make people wait to vote on KR0 in like, 2016 or whenever Act V comes out - 2014 is when Act III is going to be fresh in everyone's minds and on GOTY lists at other places.

Another nomination: Here And There Among The Echo (PC)

  • Undead ScottsmanUndead Scottsman Cybertronian Paranormal Eliminator Registered User regular
For episodic games, I think the ones that have clear, concise release schedules should totally wait for the full package (i.e. Telltale); whereas something like KR0 or The Fall, we have no clue when they're going to finish, and we have no clue if D4 will be finished at all, so it's probably fine to add them now.
