id was so awesome about releasing sourcecode for their no-longer-commercially-viable games for the longest time. It was an excellent resource for the mod community for each game, bringing tons of new mods and sourceports.
"No longer commercially viable..." If only they had anticipated Steam. Doom must be one of the most evergreen games out there.
It had nothing to do with commercial viability; John Carmack was just a big proponent of open source software, so when those games hit fives years old or so, he was down to releasing the source code. (Quake III's code release was delayed because they still had licensees with unreleased games five years later.)
I think they released the DOOM 3 source code when Rage came out, so as far as I know they still do it for all their games once they have something newer out. It's not something they've stopped doing.
It's not up to them anymore, though. It's up to zenimax, so I wouldn't hold out on the source code to Id tech...4, was it? Or is the last real id tech engine 5? I can never remember.

Rage was id tech 5. And the DOOM 3 (id tech 4) source was released in 2011, 2 years after the Zenimax acquisition, so eh.
There's a disturbing lack of Berylline in this contest. Also Icemopper don't be silly and think because you did well last time you need to to sit this one out.
Only 2 spots left on this signup but I probably won't wait long to finish up.
If you've been missing em because you're on a different time zone/schedule and want in, shoot me a pm.
Needs some @Taramoor and @Smokestacks. Need to hit a nice multiple of 5 to even things out well.
Edit: Ok that's all 25 for today. Will figure out if there's any more tweaks needed.
If I called you out and you'd like in, let me know. Also if you want to be a Captain and haven't sign up yet, let me know.
Still short one of those. But otherwise we've got the bare minimum assortment of all officers and 50 entries so far.
Though it was incredibly fun last year, it will still be very fun to see others enjoy it too! Plus, I'm way busier than I was last year and only get to read the forums (or anything) about 5 minutes a day
The Long Dark is more fun if I think I'm Femshep surviving on an alien, tundra world - thanks Brain!
Major patch coming this week (ie: Today or tomorrow). It nearly doubles the play area, adds new wildlife, and some other stuff. People are guessing that it will be moose or bears, but I'm leaning towards something smaller, like owls or foxes.

2 things we've known all along. GabeN is AMAZING. Steam support is AMAZINGly bad.

Or the evil business converse, these people throw money at me now. Why should I spend money on something that may not increase my revenue perceptibly. Instead spend it on ways to get more money like steaaaaaaamboooooox.
It is pretty much everything I ever wanted in an RPG based of one the most notoriously crude and hilarious cartoons ever aired.
It's hard to put into words how well you feel being part of it. Even though I stopped watching the show since the game released, I still recognized nearly every callback too!
Favorite moments;
- 8 bit Canada (with O Canada and Blame Canada renditions to match)
- Animu Professor Chaos/Princess Kenny
- The ONE thing you actually SAY during the whole game, bringing it all back.
Too many things to list here but those are my things, though having to fight a boss while you watch your parents have wild untamed sex is kinda awkward, but still funny. Crawling up Mr. Slave's ass is bonkers, but I adore Lemmiwink's theme to pay it little mind.

You should really watch this last season, it is one of the craziest and funniest yet. So many big WTF moments this season.
It's too bad there isn't a bunch of DLC and a sequel in the works. And a patch to make the game challenging would have been nice too.

Yeah, as much as I love GabeN and Steam and Valve, the "we're all support" answer is actually quite bullshit and indicative of the problems so many of us have had with Steam customer service. When everyone is support it's pretty easy (and even likely) for no one to be support.
Since they obviously don't organically have a culture of customer service at Valve, a current employee or new hire needs to gamify taking time to provide support within Valve. Some sort of incentive structure that rewards taking some time to resolve customer issues (but not too much time) would very likely be effective in a gaming/programming/engineering environment. Maybe get the Greek Minister of Finance back on the weekends...
(Or just, you know, create/contract for a dedicated support department. Gamifying it is more spectacular, though.)

Closing a ticket gets you a GabeN Buck. GabeN bucks can be used to buy Steam Mana. Steam mana can be used to learn and cast Valve magix. Each Valve magix has the potential to earn the employee extra time off, bonuses and raises. Each magix cast also deals universal damage to the Valve Vault. When the Valve Vault is vanquished, GabeN reaches his final form, and releases Half Life 2 Episode 2 Part 2.

Or they could just hire me. I've done support 15 years and they could just route the emails to my basement and I'll sit there all day taking care of business for them. Gonna go email Gabe my resume now.
Is it worth dipping my toes in for the first Chapter or commit to the whole kit and kaboodle? I can't look it up right now, so do you know if they've made anything else of note to sway me?
I really enjoyed chapter one, and will be buying the full Season when episode 2 comes out.
I bought Episode One as a test, and I'm glad I did. A fun adventure game, great story, great settings with a creepy Twin Peaks vibe, amd some great music.
It's great, basically.
Small tip for Achievement/trophy hunters - when you complete the chapter, if you missed any trophies, you can replay each section in an exploration mode, where decisions don't count, and grab any missing photos.
Yes, they fail to realize that spending money on people who are proficient at support will lead to less money spent per hour of support help than just having "everybody" (nobody) or god forbid your CEO answer support emails.
Do they have programmers take turns running the reception desk too?

Well, it hasn't been all the same - I did 7 years in disability insurance which was fairly torturous, but my current gig is tech support for black boxes to help companies watch their drivers which can actually be pretty interesting. It's fun to see what people try to get away with in their company cars

Okay, that's not so bad. I did phone support for a bit.
18 months for an American cable ISP, about 15-ish years ago. It once took me 42 minutes to walk someone through setting up an email account in Outlook Express. It took TWELVE minutes to get them to put the @ symbol in. Seriously though, if you can't type @, then MAAAAAAAYBE you don't actually need email.

I just beat up Madame but I had one annoying part in the fight where I wasn't seeing the quicktime prompt
I'm at the part with Captain Trace chasing me with his goddamn gunship. There's a bit where I have to scale a wall while he's shooting at me and breaking up the wall, and I just keep dying in the exact same spot. About 20 times last night. I've read guides and I'm going the right way - I just can't seem to do it right.
