These figures just reinforce how much I dislike Zero Suit Samus as a thing. These images just do not jive with the Samus I have in my head who's a real self-reliant badass. That's not to say you can't be that kind of pretty and also come off as a super badass (Bayonetta comes to mind, another character who I love), but then that's a very different sort of character, isn't it?
I always liked this image of Samus. Less glamorous, but much more reflective of the no-nonsense character I always imagine. To each his own, I guess.

Samus as depicted in the Zero Suit is closer to 5'5, I think
Without her armor on (and even with it, nowadays) she's shorter than the majority of men she's seen around
Looking at height charts for Smash, she's decently tall in that. She's only shorter in armor than Bowser (GIANT DEATH TURTLE) Ganondorf (Seven foot something wall of pain), Rosealina (Way tall), and Captain Falcon (who is, apparently, very tall as well.).
Zero suit's shorter, but she's still taller than Ike or Palutena.
Fixed. She's been tall in every other depiction, and it's likely everything about Other M will be ignored going forward.

I should also say when I say she looks "too tall" I mean relative to the shape of her body. Like, almost stretched - the proportions seem off. In fact, the more I look at it, the more convinced I am that this is my biggest problem with the figure. Compare the two (I'll spoiler since I think the Good Smile one is large):
Look at how long and lanky her legs are there. It just looks... off...
Edit: I suppose I can't comment on the paint job of the new one yet (though Figma has always done a fantastic job), but the Good Smile one also comes off slightly cheap looking - at least in the face and hair which seems semi-monotone. It makes her look slightly plastic-y.
Smash isn't to scale. If it were, Ganon would be a ten-foot behemoth since in Twilight Princess Link only comes up to his waist
Samus is just a lot shorter of late
I agree Smash isn't to scale (Although I'd focus on Olimar and Kirby for that since they're the most extreme examples), but I still think it's relevant to figuring out Nintendo's intent going forward that it has a taller Samus proportionally than Other M.

Is it? Smash 4 Samus is Other M. The Samus amiibo is Other M. They keep making the character more and more generically feminine. Fuck's sake she wears heels now for some reason.

Nah, she's definitely been embiggened and toughened up for Smash 4. And the Good Smile Figma figure looks like it lost the heels.
I loved the aesthetics of axiom verge so much, but it was one of those times one bad event spoiled my enjoyment of the game it total. For me that was the final boss. No legitimate way to win, either a specific weapon or hide in the corner. The run up to the boss wasn't very enjoyable either.

I have no problem with Samus being pretty in theory. Nothing says you can't be somewhat conventionally attractive and a cool space ronin heir to the warrior tradition of a bunch of magic bird monks. I start to get annoyed when said prettiness becomes the obvious topmost driving force of the design instead of simply a thing (triply so when this focus ends up with such stupidity as high-heeled boots on an interface/infiltration suit).
I forgot how short that game is, compared to games like Fusion and especially Super.
I guess that's what you get when you remove all the BS identical maze rooms from the original Metroid.

I'm not even going to disagree that the Good Smile figure has weird proportions, her legs are fucking weird as shit since they're basically hyperextended as far as humanly possible in order to get that swimsuit pose
Still, it's an incredibly detailed figure and it looks just as good in real life lighting as it does in the vanity shots on the website, which is more than can be said for a lot of other figures on the market

The game is pretty short but it's probably got the tightest and fastest movement in any 2d metroid game. Couple that with the game's length and the game is practically made to be speed run.
I wouldn't really consider Cave Story a Metroidvania. Too linear for that.
Yeah, I never quite got the comparison either. I guess there's some backtracking and upgrade stuff, but comparing the two is like comparing Zelda to Final Fantasy.
Alright metroid thread, assemble me a list of Metroidvanias to play while I languish waiting for more metroid
Some a bit off the beaten path:
La Mulana
Cave Story
Shantae
Guacamelee
The original Shantae is a bit rough around the edges.
I'd still reccomend Risky's Revenge and then Pirate's Curse.
Pirate's Curse is an odd beast. Despite its areas unlocking via boss defeat and event flags, it's still very Metroidy in that the equipment and skills you unlock open secrets and progression in the new areas, and in previous ones.

Yes, Guacamelee is a fantastic Metroidvania game. And yes, I'd say even Risky's Revenge is a bit rough (to me it always felt like a shell of the game the devs actually wanted to make... hell, one of the dungeons is a monster gauntlet minigame...). I hate starting people off with Pirate's Curse but it's *so much* better than the other Shantae games.
Guacamelee, if you get it on PC, even has a downloadable Samus outfit that I used basically for the whole game. It's just a cosmetic Steam Workshop thing, totally unlicensed of course. And it's totally incongruous with everything else, but it's pretty well done.

!!!!!!!!!!
I own (and loved) Guacamelee on Wii U, but I will totally rebuy it in a steam sale to wear a samus costume.
Didn't want to influence the suggestions; here's what I've already got.
Unplayed in italics, finished (or at least finished enough for me to be satisfied) in strikethrough. Plain text is started and on-hold or in-progress.
Super Metroid Prime 1
Prime 2
Prime 3
Fusion Wii U Fusion [GBA]
Hunters Prime Trilogy [Wii U]
Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition [Wii U] Steamworld: Dig [Wii U]
Darksiders II [Wii U]
Ori and the Blind Forest [pc]
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse [wii u]
I've seen enough gameplay of Axiom Verge and La Mulana to know they're probably not for me; if I catch them on sale I might buy just to support the devs/genre. Environment Station Alpha and Xeodrifter are in the same "wait for the sale" boat.

So, yeah. It's just Other M being other M.
Why I fear the ocean.

I love La Mulana, but I do think Cave story is a much more fair difficulty.
Any news for a 360 release of Ori and the blind forest? Wikipedia says tbd...
Also, the DS Castlevanias are pretty good.
And, allowing a generous definition of Metroidvanias, i would recommend "steamworld dig".

Cave Story is still awesome though.
Order of Ecclessia is still one of, if not the, best Castlevania games, for my money.
I still have my copy.
I'd still reccomend Risky's Revenge and then Pirate's Curse.

And the pirate equipment is great.

The first Batman Arkham game is also very Metroidy. So is the rebooted Tomb Raider.
