Skylanders had one figurine with previous history and that was Spyro. These are all Nintendo characters, most with lengthy history and having been lacking figures until now. The two can't even be compared in terms of audience.
Ideally the way to fix this is to put up a page for order, and produce exactly what customers order so there's no figures languishing on shelves. Disney does this with Collectors Edition T-Shirts and I'm sure other companies do as well.
Nintendo can announce "For the week of February 7th through February 14th, we're taking orders for Meta Knight." like a week in advance. Each customer can order up to three figures per person, and a minimum of 5,000 figures overall need to be ordered for Nintendo to bother with production. Once the 14th comes to an end, Nintendo cuts off orders, puts those figures into production, and ships them when they're ready.
But that's probably more than Nintendo wants to bother with, I would imagine. Plus you'd probably piss off retailers that way.
I would love to get more Amiibo but Nintendo clearly doesn't want my money. I seriously do not understand their decisions. Most things I disagree with I can at least go "okay, well I can see why they wouldn't do that."
Like, Nintendo isn't hurting for money. Take a tiny risk and make more of the things that are selling out everywhere. Open up the VC catalog for 3DS. Make the online system better and get rid of friend code nonsense. Do things that aren't crazy!
I love you Nintendo, but holy crap what are you doing.
That Lucina one looks really cool and I'm not even a big Fire Emblem person. But there's pretty much zero chance I'll get it since I'm a teacher and need to be in school most days instead of waiting outside a Best Buy at 10am.
It kind of pisses me off that Nintendo acknowledges that we want more of the rare amiibos but the best they've said is "maybe, I'd you really really want them, we might reprint some." Either ignore our complaints or fix them.
You can see there is demand for these damn things because scalpers are clearing double digit profits on some of them but if you drag your feet all freaking year none of us will care by the time it happens.

Nothing will beat Damon Baker's line the other day insinuating that their choices regarding the N3DS would piss off their core audience, but they did it anyway.
Their core audience is the only thing keeping the company afloat at the moment.

Welp, went back to Nebraska Furniture Mart. Apparently they DID have Ikes in today (not sure if that was this morning or a shipment later in the day) but they sold out. Boo. BUT, he checked the computer and they are getting more in next week. So now I have to decide if I wanna take work off for that haha
The problem started with Marth, Trainer, and Villager. Once Nintendo decided to cut some characters short without any warning it turned into a situation where ANY of them could be cut short which means ANY of them could potentially be an investment for scalpers.
If Nintendo would indicate which ones would be small runs up front, it would alleviate the problem somewhat.

There's also the fact that you can just buy all of them, wait a week to see if they're rare and if not just return them. So pretty much scalper heaven.
I sold my opened Marth for 41 freaking dollars. Not because I'm a scalper, but because when I realized it was worth more than four times what I paid for it I figured I wasn't using it enough to justify keeping it.
But damnit I want cool little action figures I can do neat stuff with. I don't want a cool little action figure I'm terrified to open or ever use because it's super valuable.
@Maximumzero I may be making this up, but isn't Nintendo sitting on a pretty good bankroll? Like, if they did absolutely terribly for a year or two they'd still be fine fiscally? I feel like that's what i've heard, while they just sit on this big riskless pile of money.
Ended up not getting to Beat Buy until 9:30. Tickets had already been handed out by then. Cut my looses and got my Kitby amiibo w/Raibow Curse and a New 3DS.

You're absolutely right. Nintendo has quite the "Warchest" they can dip into if necessary.
But how many boneheaded decisions will they make and how much longer will they continue to piss off their fanbase before folks just throw up their hands and go "Fuck it, I quit!"

They do have bargeloads of cash, but since they're also a publicly-traded company, they have to keep their stockholders happy. And even with their Scrooge McDuck-style moneybin, when they have unprofitable quarters, their stockholders aren't happy. That's why Nintendo's been scrambling lately to create more sources of revenue.

I never intend to sell them, but I can't bring myself to open up something selling for $50-100. Hopefully Nintendo will come to their senses are re-issue most of them. Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold over 7 million copies on the 3DS. How could they not predict that maybe more than a few thousand people would want a villager Amiibo?

Holy shit, you managed to actually get in on that? Congratulations. As far as I can tell it was available for sale for roughly 45 seconds.
I already have Ike, so I'm not terribly bummed, but I'd love a second one to use as a trader towards harder-to-find figures.

Oh, and look who showed up while I was playing Heroes of the Storm :P
Between this and finally getting an Ike order, I am happy today
Edit: Also, totally done w/ waves 1 through 3 now, at least once Dedede and Ike arrive.
Mine has a couple paint blotches I'm not super happy with, but they aren't *too* noticeable (he's honestly a little scuffed up too, I wonder wtf they were doing to him at the factory). I've certainly seen WAY worse though (people seem to suck at using silver paint).
How cool would it be if Meta Knight's mask was removable? :P
Just paint Kirby blue and slap some wings on him :P

BTW, took a picture of the shoddy ass paint job on Meta Knight:
This is one of the more egregious examples. Don't know why this figure in particular seems to have been painted by blind people. He's all scuffed up too like someone was kicking him around the factory floor before painting. The stupid clear support stand in particular is quite scuffed up.
Got my Mega Man and Sonic amiibos from Gamestop. Apparently, they weren't delayed (at least not at mine). Sonic looks great, but Mega Man looks a tad plain.

I think I may have a problem.
Yeah, I think Nintendo might have been sending those two out earlier as I was able to get them a few weeks ago (Sonic from Amazon, Mega Man from Nebraska Furniture Mart who got him crazy early). One theory I've heard thrown around is that with the port strikes, a lot of these big companies are holding onto stock until they get enough shipments in to fulfill orders nationally (i.e. it would look bad if a bunch of people at say, New York GameStops got them two weeks ago, while, say, California GameStops didn't get them until today). Which is why you hear about a lot of these smaller chains getting them earlier than the big ones - they didn't order as many and they don't need to hold back stock because they don't have that many stores to distribute to.
At least, that's what makes the most sense to me. I suspect they only starting shipping out Ike & Dedede last week, maybe late last week, which is why stock is so low and/or not in right now.
Apparently Sonic and Mega Man were in Canada for 2 freakin' weeks and I never noticed. Queue scramble today. Sonic was basically everywhere (mayhaps a social statement on his games nobody wants...), but Mega was the bitch. Luckily this has a happy ending.
And with that... I think I'm mostly out. I might get Lucina. I figure the last one I'll fight tooth and nail for is Ganondorf. After that, I don't know. Maybe if I see a cool one, or one turns into another Link where it just has more functionality than most. Otherwise, unless shit improves, I'm not doing this. I want to get the occasional one when the mood strikes me, not scramble to be the lucky 1%
This is exactly what I was worried was going to happen to me. I'd get bitten by the bug just enough to become disillusioned by the whole process.
I think what really gets me is how dumb stores are being too. I got Sonic at Futureshop, but his and MM's web pages have been deleted. They were apparently there for 2 weeks, and I never saw them say in stock in store once when they were up. I saw tons of Sonic at Walmart, but their site for him says Sold out online/Not sold in store. EB was my last ditch effort for MM, and despite having zero confidence they'd have him... they totally did. And Sonic. And their website just lists the most basic of the basic amiibos. The only way to even find these and know they exist is to go on a damn scavenger hunt.

Yeah, basically everyone had the figures waaaaaaaaaaaay before the US (except Nintendo World Store, because why wouldn't all the figures including most store exclusives be available at only one location in New York City!?). I think I saw people in Canada with, like, Shulks in January. It was kind of disgusting.
If these continue to be such a boon I wonder if Nintendo would consider opening up a site that lets you order directly from them, at least for the initial release of each wave.
That would 1) guarantee people who want one would get one and 2) set up solid release dates on waves.
I'm sure this has been discussed, but I'm all butthurt about Dedede right now.

Oh, and mark my words - Mega Man is going to be a common. Just not for the first few weeks while everyone scrambles to buy 20 of them :P So I wouldn't sweat him *too* much just yet.
They did 2 months of printing though, which is more than most figures got. They made a ton of Mega Men.

I think the problem is a combination of shipping problems (with the port strike forcing them to air mail everything which gets expensive - they still gotta make a profit) and they only have so many factories to manufacture the things in. So I mean, they are printing Wave 4 and the Mario ones now - they don't have any free machines to re-print stuff for something like this, and the shipping costs right now probably also makes it hard.
There might also be weird retailer agreements where Nintendo isn't allowed to sell the things themselves. I don't know how all that works.
I do wonder if with the supposed success of Amiibo though they can justify to shareholders opening up another factory or two. That would certainly help supply.
