Father's bones ending achieved, just song of Zee to write now. Few other quests to tidy up, like what's up with Godfall and how to face a Zee Beast, and I see Aestival is getting patched in tomorrow, but first thing's first.
A couple of days after I started playing, I dreamed that I sailed south along the coast and got sucked into a whirlpool, resulting in the loss of my ship and captain.
A few days after that, I sailed south along the coast in the actual game and found a whirlpool. Almost noped out right then and there.
My current captain's wife left him and took their kid. I'm not sure if she found out about his affair with Maybe's Daughter or if she was mad that he didn't, you know, go back to the house when he returned from zee a couple times. Doesn't matter.
Finished Maybe's Daughter's quest lines, pretty sure I got the mediocre ending. Nobody's Daughter is kinda a shitty lay, but on one of my last captains she disappeared, presumably forever, and I wanted to avoid that.
I like how the player seems to get obsessed and go crazy alongside their captain. At least that's what I tell all the devils and rats that I meet.

One thing I've noticed is that I can't buy Pages from any of my officers. I have plowed through the quest chains of a couple and lost them at the end, so maybe I just don't have the Pages guys anymore, but if there is really such a dearth of Pages officers, I think that, perhaps, maybe the science protagonist may be the "best" one, simply because of the number of events you can get that add points to your main stat.
Protip: When you find yourself in an introspective mood on a hilltop,
think on your past career, by Salt. Just do it! Thinking of your romantic interest or your future or whatever doesn't hold a candle to getting +5 in your main stat. I think this now caps at 100, though.
That said, anyone who tells you that Iron is a dump stat is silly. Murdering pirates and poor, defenseless sea zee creatures is huge industry; most significantly, killing a monster reduces your Terror by a substantial amount. Giving your sailors a giant catfish or flock of parakeets to kill makes them less likely to mutiny and throw you overboard into the dark, primordial zee.
In addition, you can get upwards of 4-6 Fuel or Supplies from any ship you knock over. It's not common to get that much, but it can happen. I'd say that the average echo value of each ship you sink is about 50, with occasional grand hauls of 300 or so.
Zee monsters usually have a Pages challenge to net a bunch of Fragments. Fragments lead to Secrets. Secrets lead to suffering stats! Also Hunting Trophies can be exchanged for a bunch of stories at Godfall or big Terror reduction at the Sisters' monastery.
200 health burns down pretty fast with a good deck and forward gun, honestly.
Even discounting the Icarus, Memento Mori+Caminus Hellthrasher is 50 damage before any Iron bonuses.
It's not the 200 HP dudes I'm worried about. I'm more concerned about 400 HP Lifebergs and 500 HP Republican Dreadnaughts and 600 HP Tyrant Moths.
EDIT: And, now that I think about it, the rare instances where 5+ Crack Pirate Pinnaces or Jellyfleurs swarm in from nowhere and try to take revenge for all of their fallen homies. Being able to 1- to 2-shot these guys can mean the difference between dragging your rudder away and leaving it at the bottom of the zee.

Yeah, that's why I'm wondering how the bonus on Iron scales. If it's just linear scaling, another 16ish damage per full volley isn't terribly exciting to me for the investment involved in gaining that much Iron.

It wasn't really an investment for me, as I took the Veteran background this time around. All of my +5 event bonuses were to Iron. I've actually mostly been pumping Mirrors and Veils (at least until I started getting quests that required that I spend my Secrets on Judgment's Eggs and whatnot).

Yeah I'm actually still on my first captain, but he went Philosopher.
Given that Pages is the toughest stat to raise and it is used constantly I'll never be using anything except Poet going forward though.

I honestly expect that Failbetter will eventually realize the lack of Pages officers and either mod existing officers or add new ones for Pages. Or let the Mascots teach Pages. That would be awesome.
I haven't had any trouble with getting echoes since I discovered how lucrative sunlight is. A few more runs and I'll have enough to just sail the entire zee as much as I like looking for quest chains to do.
Still going to need to be careful about how much I take in the way of supplies when I go out to zee, though!
My current captain has problems with the authorities back in London when smuggling sunlight. Those Admiralty Favors don't last forever... especially when a spy keeps grabbing my Strategic Information.
Concealed compartment is all you should need to smuggle sunlight in, but I've never had any problems with them even without it and I only have 41 Veils.

Don't bother going back to London with sunlight on hand, just sail straight from the canal to offload it on the Isle of Cats.
The odds never looked good to me with 60-some Veils (I cranked them to romance Maybe's Daughter). My ship is a cutter designed to murder pirates, and doesn't have no slots for no stinkin' concealed compartments.
I realize that these problems are of my own making.

I can't remember which slot the concealed storage goes in, but I'd never give up my 10% fuel efficiency or clay men.
Edit: okay yeah, it goes aft, can't drop my Milebreaker
Okay, at 115 Iron I had +18 damage, which essentially doubled my deck gun's damage. There was also a discrepancy somewhere, because I had between 2 and 3 extra damage coming from something. So that's around +36 damage per volley, approximately, which means ~+72 damage when the Blue Schintilack is ready. Basically anything with less than about 150 hull/health dies instantly. With 50 Iron, that's only about +24 per full Blue volley and you're only doing around 100 damage in your opening salvo.
Pages officer is useless; he only buffs to 50. Salt can also buff pages if you have the boon active during certain conditions, which is small compensation for all the grief Salt's attention gets you
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
If you have a god's attention (usually salt) you get additional options at sea or on certain lands. There are only a few instances that trigger it so don't feel like you're missing a huge chunk of the game. However, playing with the gods does give you a certain way to raise all your stats with other random boons. They'll probably make them more relevant in a future patch.
Salt's attention has nothing to do with salt's curse...maybe. Every captain of mine has been cursed by salt in various known and unknown ways (please secure your cargo once you get trading real valuables), but I've abused salt's favor too.

You have gained 10x terror
meanwhile, though, they've opened up the option of setting up your own kingdom on one of the islands

At 113 Iron, I notice a significant damage increase over a starting-Iron character with the same guns. Like, I killed Mt. Nomad without much effort.
I'm not even sure what the deal with flensing weapons is, other than the fact that they do more damage to critters.
I'll check when I get home.

and a bad-ass pirate ship wrecked my hull
I have not even circumnavigated london yet!
I'm glad they opened the new goal
it was the one I was looking forward to the most
kidney stones
Twitch (I stream most days of the week)
Twitter (mean leftist discourse)
I went into frostfound, they said I shouldn't, they said I should never
not without good reason
my crew would eat itself before I made it back to london, and if we were lucky it would only be metaphorically
that's a good reason
what came out did not long survive

a Fallen London aside, I just paid some money for a special story and had myself a little encounter with the royal family
it was
well
I'm not sure if I can accurately describe what it was
"disturbing" would not be doing it justice
