The fire emblem ones can be used as units in codename steam which is like... what?

    They're startegy game characters

Why is it so weird that you can use them in another strategy game made by the same people who make their games

Because they don't fit with the look, theme or feel of the game at all.

It's a game where Tom Sawyer and the Cowardly Lion are expert alien hunters

I think some sworddudes will be just fine

All the characters are from iconic american literarure or folk tales and are powered by steam and technology.

Like none of this is true of the fire emblem cast.

Fire Emblem is iconic American literature at this point

it refers to him having been reprogrammed.

I doubt it'd ever get backported/updated, but I wouldn't mind a amiibo update for Bayo2 to unlock the Nintendo skins without having to pay halos for them.

the fire emblem cast is clearly steam-powered imitation robots

it's why they have noticably wrong voices, even

(aside from Tom Sawyer, the Scarecrow's bio is a little worrying too)

(steampunk lincoln seems like a ruthless kind of guy)

You can bring them right back after they die

Clearly these aren't actual Fire Emblem characters

man Scaldera was a really cool boss fight

It's a super neat twist on the standard King Dodongo "throw bombs in his mouth" fight

    6F32U1X.png
  • WybornWyborn GET EQUIPPED Registered User regular
My favorite part of the Scaldera fight is when they sort of reverse the normal dynamic of it

He hops on top of his long-ass arms/legs and runs up the hill past you and then curls into a ball to try to crush you

It'd been years but that really surprised me!

Thinking about it, it would be kinda cool if they had redesigned the fire emblem characters' costumes and such instead of just changing the general artstyle, I usually like seeing reinterpretations of existing designs

but then again, that would probably just mean goggles and absurdly ornate weapons here, so maybe not

I'm just saying Mario with a steam powered F.L.U.D.D. backpack would have been the way more obvious choice.

But intelligent systems didn't make mario sunshine

That's just what they want you to think.

  • DaypigeonDaypigeon Registered User regular
I think your chances of seeing mario in a game with blood (that isn't some 2000s-era newgrounds flash) is pretty minimal

aesthetically the fire emblem characters don't quite gel but codename steam is already very mish-mash-y and the artist did a decent job translating them into the steam artstyle

thematically, bringing over legendary heroes who are known for small-unit tactics is fine. They're obviously not characters from classic literature but neither are any nintendo characters so I think that's about as good a fit as you will get, and it's not like the series gets oversaturated with shout-outs and cameos like mario or zelda (plus they're teams working at the same studio, so they probably wanted to do this)

I will admit i am slightly biased in that I like fire emblem a lot and find steampunk cringe-inducing, so I'm just glad there will be some characters without goggles

I am not a fan of Fire Emblem. Though to be fair I last played it on the GBA.

So maybe they have addressed the AI and other stuff I didn't enjoy by now.

Fire Emblem's AI is designed to kill your characters. That is their victory condition. They are very, very good within those parameters.

Personally I did not find them to be good at that at all, or much of anything, because of how they were coded to only engage once you got close enough, so it was a very simple matter of creeping forward, peeling off a small amount of them, murdering them, and repeating.

But this was the GBA version which is like 12 years old now.

I don't suppose you were playing on Hard

On Hard mode they are way more... aggressive

This is still how it works but their engage range is much larger

You couldn't select hard mode on the GBA until you beat the game on normal, iirc, and I lost interest before I beat it.

But there are very few strategy games (jsrpgs anyway) where the ai moves around unless you're close

I know! And it super bums me out because I find the tactics that it promotes (and often necessitates to beat) to be really, really repetitive and boring.

  • ChincymcchillaChincymcchilla Registered User regular
That's kind of important though because there are always way more of them than you

There are plenty of other ways to balance a small elite force against a larger, weaker force than giving them handicapped AI though.
