My wife and I are big craft beer lovers, and are flying in from Vancouver, BC on Thursday night (March 5th). We're staying at the Westin Waterfront, and are open to meeting up anytime over the weekend.

We'd love to meet some fellow beer nerds, and trade bottles as well as share a few regional/local specialties.

UPDATE:

Two weeks to go! Get hyped!

We're hosting a bottleshare/six pack swap at the Westin Waterfront on Friday & Sunday nights. If you're planning on coming, click the link below to add your name and details to the Google Doc, and to sign up for a time on either night:

And make sure you join the Facebook group:

Looking forward to cracking open a few beers with you fine folks.

Awesome idea! My wife and I are definitely in and will bring some selections from NJ.

I love this, tried this last time but nothing was ever set. I have some local brews that only come in 24oz bottles but I could bring some. I'm staying in the ramada about 4 miles away. So if something could be set up in advance that would be awesome.

Anyone know the regulations on transporting alcohol on an airplane? I might be interested if there is not an issue with having some bottles in my luggage.

You'll need to put it with your checked luggage, unless you are coming internationally, in which case I think its two liters with your carry on (via the duty free stores).

This sounds fun, think I might be able to swing by the convention area on Thurs.

Paging @redfield85 since I know he just flew with beer to South. How does it work?!

I'm coming from Brooklyn (though the less hipster-y part of it, it's still not impossible to get access to local beers) and staying at the Westin Waterfront, so I'd be interested in figuring something out, baggage space permitting. Any requests?

Ok I'm going to drop the bombshell. How about if it is homemade?

  • iltailta Registered User regular
Seems to be ok as long as you check it and wrap it really well. Of course, if you get a grumpy TSA agent they might open your checked bag and take it, you never can know for sure.

I've taken brew on the plane a couple dozen times, i just wrap it with a bit of bubble wrap, throw it in with the checked baggage. My wife and I most likely will grab some FL beer to bring and homebrew if its done in time.

if you guys do this, maybe you can organize some trips to a few breweries. There is Harpoon near by, as well as Sam Adams. Trillium is a brewery down the street from the convention center (on congress street)

  • redfield85redfield85 Registered User regular
Yea, just wrap it well and put it in your checked baggage. They make bags just for liquids. I forget what mine were called, but they were basically a plastic bag that sealed up and had bubble wrap on the inside. Worked just fine.

This sounds like an awesome idea, do we bring what others request, or just whatever we want? I'm coming from Grand Rapids so I have quite a few micro and craft breweries to available. (Founders, Brewery Vivant, Bell's, Grand Rapids Brewing Company, etc.)

  • OhFugglesOhFuggles VTRegistered User new member
This is a genius idea. Coming from VT there new are microbrews each month starting up but it would be great to share some and try some other brews.

FYI don't do the swap at a hotel. Shit was majorly frowned upon.

  • SkexySkexy bostonRegistered User new member
I'm local and could be interested, but obviously, anything I could get you could find over the weekend so I'll take a moment to drop a couple of recommendations. Harpoon is a few blocks away from the convention center and further afield I can't recommend downtown wine and spirits in davis on the red line for their selection of beer.

    http://www.harpoonbrewery.com/breweries/boston
    http://www.downtownwineandspirits.com/

There are a handful of interesting breweries also in somerville across the river if you're not tied to the convention center.

this would be cool! We've got a few nice local places and I know we're stopping by Harpoon on Thursday afternoon to get the weekend started as it is.
Westin Definitely isn't a fan of openly carrying beer in, though, brews in backpacks is a thing :P could always do something in a room if this doesn't get too big.

I'm totally down for this awesome Idea. I will be driving from central NY (Ithaca area) and will try and get a wide selection to trade.
I'll bring a growler of my favorite local stuff so if anyone wants to try some Jester's Nectar they are more than welcome.

Nice! I'm coming from cortland. I'll bring some of the local brew. I agree if we keep it small and someone has a room that's near the BCEC we could do that. I would limit it to 10-15 people

I think if people brought a 6pk of local brew or foreign beer with them, that would be ok.

Lay out all the varieties and have people select one at a time to create another 6 pack of beer. This is just an idea.

I will also be in Boston from Thursday morning to Monday morning.

Any day would work for me, Thursday night I'm either doing the poke crawl or the game night. Other nights I don't have anything planned yet.

Six pack exchange strikes me as a great way to do this.

I'm around Thursday through Monday as well, though Thursday is spoken for at game night. I have a Westin room to do this in, but I'd need to clear it with my roomgroup if we were doing this, and when.

This sounds great, my fiance is a beer lover and we did a little exchange a couple years back that was fun. Space to do it is difficult, the hotels don't like booze exchanged in their open spaces. A room would be less convenient, but better.

Looks like we have several ppl interested in this. Is there a place or time ppl would want to meetup (of sometype)?

I know Thurs before PAX is busy for many as most will be either at the pre PAX board games, pokecrawl, or just getting in late.

  • ClannMorganClannMorgan Registered User regular
I'd be interested in doing an exchange...sounds like a great way to try some new beers.

As for when I vote for Friday at 5pm...obviously this is more conveneint for me...as on Thursday I'm doing the pre-pax dinner, the game night and maybe a crawl too and then I plan on hitting the parties fri/sat night. Oh and Westin would be a great place.

I could do friday. I don't have anything planned. If we could do like 6 or 7pm, that would be fine. Do it after the convention floor closes.

I'm 4 miles away from the BCEC so I would need sometime or if the person that supplies the room allows me to store the booze before going into the BCEC.

We should make a list of beer that people are bringing so that we don't bring duplicates.

Cool, good to see people are interested!

I like the idea of doing a six pack swap - bring six beers, trade for six beers. I'd also love to crack open a few bombers or something and do a tasting as well.

Making a list of what's being brought sounds great to me, and if anyone wants to take requests or is willing to do so, that's awesome.

My wife and I are fine with hosting it in our room at the Westin, provided people are discreet with their transportation of their beer, as we'd rather not get kicked out during pax or anything. Space will be limited if we host it in our room, so if there's enough people committed to coming we may set up two times to meet and do a swap. I'm in no way familiar enough with Boston to know of anywhere else we could do this, but if any locals or knowledgeable people have suggestions, they'd be very welcome.

As soon as the schedule goes up I'll figure out a time(s) that would be good for us if we're hosting this shindig. If anyone else would like to host or knows a place we could go, that's cool too.

I'm already looking forward to drinking a cold one with you all!

Awesome! I'm so excited that this is happening.

I'll make sure I'll bring a couple cold bottles with me so if anybody wants to try some drinks then that's fine with me.@stu13x get with me if you are coming so that we don't bring the same kind.

Let's just make sure anybody that is coming has ID with them before we start.

Yup, my first post goes here. Boston local, first PAX.

I will keep checking in on this thread, definitely has my interest. I haven't done bottle parties before but they sound perfect.
I'm a big Night Shift supporter and I have some limited bottles from them I have been stockpiling for no clear purpose.
Maybe I will even fill my Trillium growler. Trillium is an excellent brewery if anybody has the chance to visit. Not terribly far from BCEC but likely an unpleasant walk weather pending.

If anybody from VT can bring some heady topper that's a fine local favorite to bring to swaps.

My hubby and I are definitely in. We can bring some Long Island stuff, might see about a discrete growler to bring some for sampling.
Gonna bring some plastic cups in case we do some tasting, would be nice to have some extras.
I like the idea of a selection list. I'll see what we'll bring and post it here by the weekend most likely.
Debating focusing on super small craft beer versus something people might have access to... delicious decisions

I'd be down for this. I can pick up a variety of local Connecticut brews to bring along. It seems like we have a new nano/microbrewery opening every week in this state, it's a good time for good beer.

  • ViciousEin02ViciousEin02 NYRegistered User regular
I'll bring in a variety of Ithaca beer to exchange. I'll also bring a bottle or 2 of Cortland beer to sample in the room.

My husband (Cateleptical up there earlier in the thread) already threw our hats into the ring, but I wanted to offer to organize this up a bit in terms of making sure we have a nice variety to choose from!

I think a 6-pack exchange, much like a cookie exchange, works best--as f33rNapalm suggested--everyone brings 1 or 2 six packs, and you leave with a variety of beers in the same quantity you came in with. The nice part here is that if someone doesn't make it, it doesn't impact the exchange in terms of making sure everyone gets back what they bring!

If everyone's interested, I'd like to throw up a google doc so people can sign up - this way we know who is officially participating (probably good to keep it message board members only?), and what's being offered up, so we don't end up with 20 6-packs of IPA and everyone's fighting over the one variety of stout, etc. and that we're not ending up with a ton of duplicates.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes as far as planning goes, but happy to help get things organized to make for a fun exchange!
