Connection Problem

manjimanji Registered User regular
so, my internet, both wired and wireless is normally fine. intermittently though its starting to have periods where i can no longer get on the net. checking the router there is still data going in and out and my ISP can find no issues at their end, it just seems to be net access. rebooting seems to make no difference and it always seems to right itself eventually.

the wireless is playing a part somehow. when the net is down changing the wireless channel restores the net on wired machines for 10 or so seconds. disabling the wireless entirely restores internet access.

i'm at a loss as to why my wireless should affect my wired connections. any advice gratefully received!

Is your wireless network secured? If not (or if it's using weak security like WEP) there could be someone else using your network.

Alternatively, how old is your router? It could be a software or hardware problem with the router that it's having trouble running both wired and wireless connections.

it's fairly new and using WPA2-PSK (AES). my next steps are probably password change and recommitting all wireless devices, then factory reset, then replacement

You might also want to check ip addresses. You could be getting some double assignments. I know my router sometimes has problems with dynamic assignments for wireless devices, since they are constantly turning off and then trying to reconnect. Sometimes they will try and use and old IP address that has already been reassigned to another device, which causes problems. Although in my case it manifested as not being able to establish a wireless connection on some devices, rather than not being able to access the internet on the wired devices, but you never know.

In the end I just assigned static (on the router side) IP addresses for all of my devices since there aren't very many.
