Yeah, what looked like cowardly "hiding behind vague statements" turned out to actually be "playing the bad guy in order to spare Jimmy's heart", which is almost respectable.
I get marginally angry every week when I go to click next episode and there is no next episode. It's like Netflix was just a long con, luring us all into the comfortable ability to watch as much as we wanted of whatever we wanted and then BAM, they shut us down to once a week like savages from ancient times.

I'm not sure I could handle watching this show in marathon mode. I had to take breaks when catching up on Breaking Bad. The show's too emotionally heavy.
I am so excited to see where things go from here. This was a game changer, and kind of expected. But man, I got personally angry about the "reasoning".

Oh yeah, Chuck is full of shit. He's trying to justify his own superiority complex and doesn't want to admit that the idea of Jimmy not being a screw-up threatens his ego.
Holy fuck, your guys comments are making me put 2 and 2 together on things I didn't originally pick up on.
So the "partners" Howard is refering to are Chuck and just Chuck...
So did Chuck threaten to quit if HHM brought on Jimmy?
And Kim's thing...
Yeah I was not liking Chuck at the end of this episode, but he's upgraded to full cunt status now.
This or a few episodes from this would be a good place to start the switch over to Saul. Maybe we'll see it end of season.
Edit: Didn't spoiler this originally because I'm terrible.
I'm not sure this automatically makes Hamlin a good guy, just a willing accomplice to Chuck
There's no indication that Hamlin WOULD want to work with Jimmy
Unresolved: why wouldn't Jimmy just take the case to any other firm?
The fact that he goes out of his way to take all of the heat and a couple of well-acted moments where you can see it hurts him on some level to do so goes a long way towards humanizing him. Like, I get the distinct impression that he's not eagerly conspiring with Chuck to keep Jimmy down.

'cause it's hamlin, hamlin, mcgill, the other hamlin might have been the other guy in the office in the first episode or he retired and they just keep his name on there
Howard has no reason to doubt or care about Jimmy. I mean, he downright worships Chuck, as far as he's concerned Jimmy is his mentor's little brother who got a job in the mailroom. Why not give him a job? If Chuck let it happen, there's no reason not to. After all, Chuck is basically God to that firm.
What initially played as a petty superiority complex was actually just Howard covering for Chuck this whole time (because, once again, he'd do anything Chuck asked him to). He willingly took on the role of villain to this guy he has no reason to particularly hate.

Chuck was the petty tyrant all along.
He has all kinds of reasons now! The billboard stunt, years of apparently holding HHM hostage by threatening a Chuck buyout, there's all kinds of animosity there.
I think the scene where he calls Jimmy's psuedo-girlfriend (I cannot remember her name) back into his office to explain the situation is just a selfish act to show her that he isn't the bad guy.... but he's still the bad guy, because he has the option to majority vote Jimmy as partner. He's complicit in this.

He is, but only because he chooses to follow Chuck's lead.
Or at least that's how it was initially, back in the mailroom.

Why would Hamlin go against a partner, who got that reaction from the rest of the firm, for a guy who his own brother says is unreliable?
I'm not saying he's a good guy. We don't know enough about that. But I wouldn't call him selfish or the bad guy either.
Also, this show continues to rock my socks. That ending was devastating.
Even though the show had telegraphed it, just thinking about what Jimmy must have been going through... oof.
And I had no idea that one guy was Trevor. He was even dressed up like a GTA protagonist! They already got Michael Mando, they should have even more video game voice actors show up

I've been playing GTA V for the first time the last few weeks, and it was pretty great when Trevor was suddenly a real live person on my TV.
Listen, as big as that Chuck reveal was, how great was that pimento cheese scene, huh? So good. I had to rewind and watch it again before continuing the episode.
With all this focus on Mike. You think maybe gus will show up eventually?
I'd put the odds of that happening at 100%. Mike works for Gus when he's introduced in Breaking Bad (okay, technically when he's introduced, Mike is just a The Cleaner type, but he's clearly worked with Gus for years and years when Gus is introduced). So I'd expect him to meet and begin working with Gus sooner or later. Probably later, although I almost thought he was going to be introduced in the pimento scene when I saw the orange shirt. Damn teases!

Also, considering Saul's the one who arranges for Walt to meet with Gus, presumably through Mike, I'm expecting to see that thread get fully connected.

Aaah, makes sense.

I'd say early to mid 2000s.
Also, I'd expect a time jump between seasons unless the ending is a cliffhanger where that wouldn't work.
I just watched episode 4.
It's been fantastic so far.
Just
oh my god
this fucking show
Aw man, Jimmy.
Jimmy you did something bad, didn't you.

Laughed so hard when Jimmy called them "Ned and Maude Flanders" because that nailed it so perfectly. They're the Flanderseses without religion.
