Speaking of games in the category of, "When Will This Hit Steam", Assassin's Creed Rogue is finally on it. I knew about this one earlier, and it's supposed to be you playing as a Templar this time, killing your former Assassin brothers. It's apparently supposed to have been the lesser between it and Unity, but most things I can find says this one is better. Sailing type bits from Black Flag, it's a precursor to AC III (so you visit New York before half of it is burned down), and did I mention that instead of the Assassins you are playing an Assassin turning Templar this time? It's a sequel to Black Flag, has a cameo from Freedom Cry, and sets things up for what happened in III and Unity.
Now, I get why it was only on UPlay for a while, they were trying to get as many folks as possible in on their distribution marketplace before Steaming it. But honestly I'm glad it didn't take too long.
It was only the lesser game in marketing, because it was the "last gen" (360/PS3) game and Unity was the "next gen" (X1/PS4) one with all the associated glitz and glamour and advertising budget. By every single account I've seen, Rogue is by far the more highly regarded game... the problems it has are people a) not knowing it exists and b) hardware-generation snobbery.
Its quite like if someone were to add Jack Thompson to a video game roster. I have a number of problems with Anita Sarkeesian and Jonathan Mcintosh, mostly with their extremely wrong and damaging accusations about video games. None of the problems I have with either of them are a result of either of their genders, its 100% on the statements they've made that have been proven clearly wrong and their crazed pushing of their agenda based on completely wrong interpretations of common 'tropes'.
But I wont get into more than that here. If you care to PM me about it, I'd be happy to explain any viewpoints I have, but I'll leave it out of the steam thread. I still think that Towerfall is ridiculous by adding that, however. I wouldn't even accept that game as a joke gift now.
nope
also towerfall owns, and the guy making it is dope
anyone wants a copy, first three people pm and i'll buy it for them
Ok three fellow video game hating, femenazi soldiers have taken this terrible ridiculous game. Godspeed making straight white males everywhere uncomfortable classy people!
Just dropping in to say that I've not read this thread in forever, and have never seen you post, and I already like you.
Didn't Anita Sarkeesian complain about Dying Light being anti woman? Talked about how the girl in that was a damsel in distress who needed saving. Anyone who's played the game could tell you, that really ain't it. I likened the character to Farah from the 2009 Prince of Persia game; a complete bad ass who saved your ass multiple times and you don't save her once.
So yeah I'd give Anita more credit if she actually bitched about the relevant games. But her endeavour is noble, even if her methods are kinda shitty and lazy.
It's really not cool to make a statement like that and then say no one else can respond in kind.
Corrigan made a statement that was Steam related, and then told people he would be happy to continue the conversation (that was not Steam related) outside of the Steam thread.
Meanwhile, you're clamoring for non Steam related discussion in the Steam thread on a topic that is the living embodiment of can of worms that shits on everything it touches because both sides are so incredibly polarized.
Keep this in mind when you're deciding what really is and is not cool.
Saying "Fuck this Steam Game because of Message X" would probably make discussing why you feel that game should be fucked pretty Steam related. If you're bringing up stuff like that as to why a game should not be supported, you should be able to deal with push back about it.

Not to mention that when emotions rise, sometimes the tendency to use unmarked spoilers as a point happens.

Spoilered comments on this below if you care (because I do but hey, Steam thread; also I mention plot points of the Prototype series):
From what I can tell, her comments appear to be about a character named Jade, who, while empowered at certain early points, is later disempowered. Now, to be fair she expresses her disappointment in that action, she does not condemn the game; she expresses disappointment in the creative team for using a tired "capture the girl to drive the plot" mechanic. This is all hearsay for me, on both sides, as I my fear of zombies keeps me from being able to assess the problem from a fully informed viewpoint, and she could be seeing the forest for the trees.
However, another game (oddly another zombie game that I didn't realize was one until I was into it) of Prototype had the sister Dana helping the main character gathering intel early game, and it was boring. Only when he had the stakes of rescuing the girl (she is taken by monsters) does the narrative pick up. And yet when she was taken I said aloud, "Really?" because the stakes could have been anything else to drive him forward, but they chose to depower the female character and go with the old, tired "rescue the lady" story plot point. And once you rescue her, she disappears from the story. I found all of that disappointing (as well as just one more missed chance in the narrative in that game). Now in the second one, as I understand it (I'll still play it even knowing it's zombi-like for certain reasons such as ongoing narrative), Dana becomes leader of the resistance, she is empowered, but they use the main character's Daughter as the "ball" instead of her. It's just tiresome after a while. I mean, why not a son? Why not something other than a person? It always seems to be the daughter.
I agree that her endeavour is noble, and I also do think some folks akin to her can see things that aren't there, but I don't expect social commentary to be flawless. But I see their endpoint (even if the way they get there is sometimes mentally acrobatic).
I think I'll be playing some more anime cuteness today, because HyperDimensional Neptunia is silly and I like silly.

I went from ready for my second Sunless Sea captain to die and start in on the next one with the headstart he'd have. But now I'm beginning to fear it, because I've actually managed to uncover large parts of the map and upgrade the ship a bit, and get some work done on the individual officer stories.

I for one find this discussion far more interesting and relevant to steam than the pages of D&D and old hardware that I had to sift through. Not that I have a problem with that either though.

Re;Dying Light.
She fails to point out that the male protagonist, you, are disempowered more than Jade is And isit's her that saves you.
I have no problems with the push back from it? Thats exactly why I said that anyone could contact me and I'd be more than happy to explain it. But If you guys insist, sure.
Anita Sarkeesian and Jonathan Macintosh are ignorant, lying, charlatans. They make ridiculous statements that fall apart under the simplest scrutiny and then incorrectly assign things to 'tropes' without even understanding the basic tropes they're trying to explain. Even their first few videos were so wildly offbase that it would be impossible to believe they even played the games themselves. The footage they use as "proof" is taken from others without their consent, and completely proves the opposite of what they're trying to explain.
In FemFreq's first few videos they go on about how Hitman is super sexist because you are rewarded for murdering innocent women in a strip club. Except that the video they use clearly shows that you lose points for killing them (You lose points for killing civilians of either gender) and that there is no benefit or bonus given to the player for murdering anyone that isn't your 'target', if they're male or female.
The "damsel in distress" trope is repeatedly used and explained away as turning the "female character" into an "object". Then she explains that anything that isn't the player (the only one that you control) being used to progress the plot becomes an "object". This means that any woman that is not the main character in a video game, that has anything to do with the plot, is an object. This is how she explains the dying light "damsel in distress" point. I'm going to spoil the following lines for those who havent played it, but I'd strongly suggest reading it if you're intrigued.
Jade Aldemir, a proffessional kickboxer called 'The Scorpion', is the female NPC she calls a damsel in distress. In the first 5 minutes of the game, Jade rescues you while a male character dies to save you. Later in the game you and Jade are brought together before the big bad guy. He injects both of you with the zombie plague. You then try to attack what you think is a zombie Jade, who then stabs you with a needle. Turns out Jade injects you with the cure for the zombie plague, which means she doesnt have any to save herself. She sacrifices herself because she thinks you would do more to save the other survivors. The bad guy then calls you out on letting her decide instead of yourself. She then fights the remaining enemies, buying you time to escape while she heroically sacrifices herself. Calling her a "damsel in distress" is completely retarded. Is she in distress? Yeah. She also moves the plot forward by making choices for you, rescuing you, and then allowing you to escape. What the fuck could you possibly want more from a female character, or ANY character, than for them to be the heroic plot point? Taking away her heroic actions and calling her just a plot point so she fits into your "damsel in distress" narrative is disgusting. Thats what Anita and Jon are about. They don't play the games they talk about, or at the very least dont even remotely understand plot and story.
This is the exact thing that disgusts me about FemFreq. They will actively make up lies that REMOVE the power from female characters. Are some of the same stories over used? Sure. Theres also a lot of sexism in some video games. However the ignorance inherent in 90% of their videos cause me to seriously question any of their comments.
Anita has been talking about the smurfette trope as well. Using this as a way to call Borderlands 1 sexist because they've included the 'token' female vault hunter. Except thats not what the trope actually is. The Smurfette trope is the one stating that you throw in a "the girl" character, just to add diversity. Not you make a character female, that the entirety of the character is based on being "the girl". Like a token minority. However Lilith in BL1 is far from that. She has a backstory (its short and shitty, but its just as indepth as the other vault hunters) and she has her own powers and schtick being a siren. Would you say that Borderlands is racist because they have a "token minority"? Of course not, because hes not just a token guy. He is a soldier who just happens to be black. Its the EXACT same for Lilith. Shes not "the girl" she is the Vault Hunter that happens to be a girl.
These are just two of the tropes shes using COMPLETELY WRONG and then trying to cry sexism. Thats the problem I have with FemFreq at its core. Both her and Jonathan are charlatans trying to explain everything up to be SEXISM OMG which is actually having a negative effect by confusing the fucking issues.
I fully support women in gaming, I support female characters, and Lilith and Maya were two of my favorite vault hunters. One of my good friends worked on Destiny, and now works for ArenaNet, and shes very dear to me. I think that more women should be in development of video games, and there SHOULD be people supporting less sexism in video games. However these two are the worst possible people to "idolize" and reward with a playable character based off them in your video game. Thats the problem I have with Anita's inclusion in towerfall. I think shes scum.
But like I said, if anyone cares to discuss it I'm more than happy to explain it further and give citations and links to more info.
And I fully expect people to believe that just because I think FemFreq isn't the second coming of Jesus that I'm some kind of sexist asshole. That occurs a lot actually.

I recall someone chiming in on his behalf a few months ago (he stopping coming here not long after Steam Battle 2014) saying that he just has other priorities in life and that gaming had fallen off the radar. I remember checking my friends list when I read that and saw that it'd been a hundred plus days since he'd signed into steam, so that could be the case.
Still, it was bizarre that both JaysnFour and Scratchy had he exact same PA and Steam avatar. Lightning striking the same place twice, or something more sinister? *lightning strikes background, twice*. Oh, it was the lightning thing, sure.
What happened to that co-op steam deal that was supposed to be on Valentine's day? Did I miss it?
