Okay, so these past few days I've been playing Hotline Miami 2, and as a huge fan of the first game, I wanted to give my thoughts on it.

The original Hotline Miami was perfect for its place in time - it was riding high on the crest of a wave of 80s nostalgia and reveled in everything that games were meant to be moving away from as they matured as a creative form. Blood, gore, mindless violence, served up with a side helping of incredible music, and a story that could be thought-provoking, if you were intrigued enough to pursue it. The action was tight, the soundtrack fitted it perfectly, it moved at lightning speed and was like nothing I'd seen before. It's no surprise then that Hotline Miami 2 was my most anticipated game of the past two/three years, I wanted more time in this twisted world. Well, if time is your number one determining factor then Hotline Miami 2 gives it to you, the game is significantly longer than the first game - a main course to Hotline Miami's crisp starter, but...well, I don't know how good this restaurant is, and this analogy is falling apart, so all I'll say is that the main course can feel pretty leaden.

The breakneck pace that gave the original its crazed energy is lost somewhat in the sequel, which uses story far more overtly than the first. Remember those dream sequences that'd pop up in the original every so often? Yeah, there's a dialogue-heavy scene like that every 2 missions or so. The problem with breaking up the action like this is that you never really gain the momentum you did in the original, where you'd get to the end of a level, smash through a door, break someone's face, and then go on to the next mission, with (usually) just a phone call between the two. This time, you finish a level, and there's Hotline Miami's version of a cutscene to break the flow. That's not to say that the dialogue is badly written, or the scenes badly done, they're pretty good for the most part, but they take away a key part of the game.

The action is still great, melee weapons are still brutal (you can use a chainsaw, for god's sakes), and there's some new guns, which are decent, but the game also pretty much forces you to use guns at several points, drawing enemies to you, and often forcing you into multiple gunfights. That leads me to another point, the levels are far larger this time around, which causes some problems when you're up against dudes with guns. You can be keeping an eye on one enemy that's charging towards you, kill him, and then be shot by another guard that you couldn't really keep your eye on. The larger levels also mean you have to make more complex plans, whereas in the original, plans were often made in my mind in a split second, in HM2, I'm having to stop and think more often, which again, breaks the flow.

The story is decent, but somewhat hard to keep track of, taking place across three different points in time. Actual hot spoilers in the tab below.
And the bit in Hawaii where you're killing...invading Soviet troops? What the hell is that about? It's also another scene where you're pretty much forced to use a gun. It's not a great mission.
There is one point where the sequel is stronger than the original - the soundtrack. Oh my lord. The original game introduced me to an artist that I now love, and have pretty much everything by, and I feel like the sequel is going to do that for a few people. There's a ton of tracks ranging from pumping, incredible synth to a wonderfully smooth track used on the main menu that I just want to take a swim in. Even if you're not interested in the game, I'd urge you to go listen to some of the music and pick it up if you like it, it's that good. @Drake, you'd love it.

I guess the problem is that when you're tasked with making a sequel to a game that was perfect for its time, where do you go? Hotline Miami 2 chose to take the path of packing in tons of content, missing the point of what made the first game so great. The first game was perfect, for me, and for the time. While I'm sure some people will think the same for the sequel, I doubt it'll be that for nearly as many people. It's really important to understand though that despite what I'm saying probably sounding scathing, it's not a bad game. I'm having a really good time with it, but compared to the first? It's not doing it for me.

TLDR: HM2 misses what was great about the original, feels slow compared to it, is still a good time. Great soundtrack.

So I got hit with two games by @akajaybay for participating in the Steam Games. I asked him if that meant I was about to die. His response was something about dicerolls and luck.

I'm totally going to die now, aren't I?

So Might and Magic X is on for $7.50 right now. Is it worth this price?

@Descendant X - I think M&M Legacy is a ton of fun. I've got a fair number of hours into it and I feel like I've barely dented it. There seems to be quite a lot to do and discover. I without a doubt say it's worth $7.50.

EDIT - Oops, I didn't even see that Corp had already responded to this. What he says is all true! And I see you already picked it up anyway, so hey. I hope you dig it.

So what are the thoughts on Ass. Creed 3 and 4? I have heard better things about 4 but i dont want to skip too much story wise by missing 3.

3 is fun, but the story has serious issues, and for me the biggest is the pacing. It feels like 1/2 the game is intro. Not that it is a short game, just a really long intro.

The season pass/digital deluxe adds The Tyranny of King Washington content which has some pretty fun new features.

I personally thought AC3 was an atrocity, but it depends on what you're looking for out of it:
    - If you want a satisfying conclusion to Desmond's story... you're not going to get it.
    - If you want interesting historical buildings to scale... well, we weren't building things very interesting or tall at that point in our history.
    - If you like planning out intricate assassinations... well, there's like one. And it's path is pretty set and on rails.

On the other hand, do grab it:
    - If you want a woodlands roaming hunting simulator.
    - If you like the idea of managing a small town of craftsman (seriously the best story in the game).
    - If you want to play as a dude who is a dick to everyone. Usually with good reason, but not always.

Payday 2 is on sale again? Wasn't it just on sale?

It's been on sale for a few days to celebrate the web series' release

It went on sale for SteamOS and they haven't taken it down yet. Then the web series got put up and the Hype Train event ends soon with their Spring Break event starting the 13th.

With the now 100% xp boost, it's a good time to check the game out if you haven't and grab the GOTY or DLC you're missing on the cheap.

Any DLC in the "must have" category? I have already picked up Gage Mod Courier, Hotline Miami and Clover. While I'm tempted by the guns I have barely afford any of the standard ones and the heist packs I can be cheap and piggy back on other players.

You should probably buy Big Bank because you will want to play it constantly as the best heist in the game :P

    In more serious stuff:

Mod Pack, snipers and weapon pack 1 are usually listed as the top stuff as they each give something useful and unique (easy mod access, snipers and grenades respectively). Though if you're just gonna buy one weapon pack it's worth noting that the Historical pack comes with a sniper and an LMG for maximum variety.

After that it's really up to you. Either the shotgun or assault pack would probably be next because they give you access to explosives of some sort for stunning dozers but really in spite of the sheer amount of DLC about you'll be shocked how little you need.

EDIT: Also join the steam group for it to unlock a whole bunch of weapons for free. Including the ability to hit cops with a giant wad of cash.

I haven't been playing lately, so I don't have any of the newer DLCs. None of the DLCs are really must haves. You can still play the DLC maps by joining a game, you just can't host a game for a DLC map. The weapons are nice, but not necessary, you can get by with just the base weapons.

Big Bank Heist is indeed a great map. I still haven't been able to successfully stealth it, but it's really well designed.

If you have friends that can host the DLC only heists you can skip those. Like everyone else has said, none are required to win, they're all about what you enjoy and I second/third what's already been posted.

That said, I tend to suggest the Clover Pack also because of the Burglar perk deck for stealth. Not critical, but nice to have.

yea this is really true, the only 'must have' I would say is the Gage Mod Courier, you really don't need any of the others as noted above. I really love that they avoided splitting the userbase by letting people without the DLC maps play them on hosted servers. And as said, the Bots in this game are really useless which is surprising because the game overall is pretty well polished every other way (bots don't do mission objectives). Pugs are kind of hit or miss, I've had some really awesome teammates but also some really crappy ones. It's better IMO to use the 'In Lobby' filter when finding a game to plan out whether everyone is going to go loud (guns blazing) or stealth (low/no body armor, ECM, etc.). A few games I had a dude that was Stealth spec'd so well he solo'd a few games and basically powerleveled me up.

Anyway, I just got this game myself and if anyone still plays feel free to add me on Steam, I'll probably be playing this for a bit

I'd say it depends on how much of a fan you are of:
    • Ubisoft
    • Assassin's Creed
    • Colonial America
    • Hunting in the Woods
    • History!

Also, you only really start the story of the "main" character Connor 6 sequences in (The first 3 are prologue of sorts, the 4th and fifth are you as a kid-ish), which can give the game a bit of an "on rails" feel, and that can be harsh coming straight in from the other previous games that were very much more open.

Still, I had a blast with it. I put in 70ish hours and only felt like it was maybe 40, so I count that as a plus. Also, your assassin brotherhood is more unique this time, which I count as a bonus, and forts were fun to either infiltrate or walk right in the front door.

The Main questline for AssCree 3 is hot garbage, writing-wise, but the Homefront missions, detailing you bringing life to a colonial town, are great! Well worth the play time.

I also greatly enjoyed the forested areas. The cities were...eh...

Blaze through the campaign, but relish the ship-fights, and the Homefront stuff.

    AssCree4 is great, though!

I'm sure it's been asked and answered due to the sale, but is X Rebirth worth it at this point? I know they had some major content/bug patches and a 'reboot' of it at some point, but I haven't heard a damn thing about it since its (sadly) disastrous launch.

There was/is PA Crime Time, but it hasn't been super active. I play with some friends quite a lot and as I've said before, am always willing to take the difficulty down a notch to help new folks out. We try to do a healthy mix of loud and stealth although we have been on a stealth kick lately trying to shave time off our Shadow Raid, Banks, and jewelery store runs without just plain ECM rushing them. (Side note: ECM rushing Shadow Raid is really fun.)

Soooo... Ori and the Blind Forest seems to be a neat new thing. It's mind-blowingly beautiful from what I can tell. Reviews seem pretty favorable. People should have it.

    Oh, I know!

    Let's have a contest!

Since this game is so darn pretty... I need a pretty new desktop wallpaper. 1920x1080. Send me your most beautiful wallpapers. Any subject matter that you like, because beauty is totally subjective (bonus points if you can articulate why you find it appealing). Note: I'm not asking for original art (though you're certainly welcome to). Just a wallpaper from somewhere that you love. And don't pick something because you think I might like it - pick what YOU like.

I'll choose a winner in an [unspecified] few days - either my favorite submission or, or I can't decide, randomly among my favorites. Winner gets a copy of Ori.

    Go!

(edit: Alternately, if you don't want the game because you already own it or you just have no soul like me, you can designate a stand-in giftee if you win)

Last call for stragglers and procrastinators!

How long does a heist typically take in PD2? Are we talking hours or is it like a 30 minute thing.

Hopefully I can get some gaming in tonight but that may not happen. Have to start prepping for a mini-vacation and I was up late last night building my computer. That being said, I really want to run this bad boy through it's paces now so if I can, I'm definitely up for it.

I'm sure it's been asked and answered due to the sale, but is X Rebirth worth it at this point? I know they had some major content/bug patches and a 'reboot' of it at some point, but I haven't heard a damn thing about it since its (sadly) disastrous launch.

It's a pretty decent sale, but if it's still virtually unplayable, meh.

It's a freeplay weekend so you can try it out, the download also wasn't too bad (only about 7-8 GB install).

However, it crashed when I tried to change resolution. I almost didn't give it any more chances, but on a second try I was able to change the resolution and get into a ship.

Good call, think I missed the free play part, just saw the sale.

Congrats to @Stabbity Style on winning the Ori drawing.

Oh wow, thanks! Can't wait to dive in this weekend! I love me some metroidvania and it seriously appears to be one of the best looking games ever.

    Thanks again! <3

And out of nowhere just now, @Talus9952 PM'd me a code. It was for Double Dragon Neon! Thanks!

The Double Dragon games were some of my favorites as a kid. I even liked Double Dragon 3 on the NES, Bimmy & Jimmy be damned.

I was hit by a random code from @Corsini ! I followed the indigala link, since he didnt say what it was. Turns out it was a gift of Orc Attack: Flatulant Rebellion! .... I have no idea what this game is but it combines my love of orcs and farting, so It has to be good!

    Thanks so much bro. <3

So what are the thoughts on Ass. Creed 3 and 4? I have heard better things about 4 but i dont want to skip too much story wise by missing 3.

4 is a must. It's not the deepest game, but I can think of no other game where you collect sheet music via parkour so your crew sings new sea shanties as you sail.

There's a good AC4 episode of the Top Score podcast where the composer talks about how he had to get the vocalists for the shanties to stop singing so well.

So @Talus9952 saw fit to surprise gift me a code for one of the games on my wishlist, BloodRayne Betrayal.

It's always great to have a hack-and-slash game to spend a few minutes with here and there, and since I finished Final Exam and Sacred Citadel I didn't really have anything that fit into that category anymore. Thanks very much.

The best part of AC4 is this. Even if it's fixed. Just the fact that it happened.

Just like that Seinfeld episode where George sings a bastardized version of the Greatest American Hero theme, only Jason Alexander is a musical theater actor by trade so they had to ask him to sing it poorly.
