I thought Winterhold was a college, not a city /s
It is indeed a city. A large one. It used to be Skyrim's capital, in fact.

And then it got sunk to the bottom of the sea because Bethesda ran out of time to develop cities mages or something.

Yay... After weeks without any issues, crashes or otherwise, I ran into several glitches at Kodlak's farewell do - first the game wouldn't continue with the weenie roast, then it wouldn't give me the relevant quest tasks, so I had to resort to console jiggery pokery. Added to which, I've suddenly got intermittent freezes for a couple of seconds. Haven't yet restarted the game, so I'm hoping that those will be gone soon, or that they're linked to this quest and once it's over that's it, but it would definitely suck if this was a constant now. Meh.

That's strange, I'm assuming you're using the unofficial patch mod, which is supposed to fix the bug where
    Kodlak's funeral
    doesn't fire off.

I don't use it, so the funeral won't fire off for me. The workaround is to console resurrect
    Skjor
when you come across his corpse in your first mission after becoming a
    werewolf.

  • ThirithThirith Registered User regular
I'm indeed using the unofficial patch, so I don't know what's going on. I've forwarded to a later stage of the quest using the console, but it's mostly the weird freezing issue that worries me. I don't know if it's connected to the quest, or whether it was a weird hiccup this morning that will be magically resolved next time I start the game. Will have to see when I get home...

Are you running a lot of mods with scripts? It might be script lag.

  • ThirithThirith Registered User regular
It's possible - but the weird thing is that this never happened until this morning, and I haven't installed any new mods in a week or two. The game went from no freezes whatsoever to freezes lasting several seconds every couple of minutes.

Yeah there is a mod for that. I've never tried it.

I've always had a hard time getting into content mods like that. Adding weapons and armor? Changing spells around? Awesome. But when they start building new areas I just can't shake the feeling of just reading fan fiction, even when they're heavily supported by the lore.

Interesting NPCs is legitimately better than any of the vanilla content. Helgen Reborn is pretty comparable to vanilla, outside of some poor voicing for minor characters. I actually enjoyed it.

Of what I've played or seen, those are the only two major quest mods I'd really defend, though, at least until I get around to trying The Wheels of Lull or Beyond Skyrim: Bruma comes out. Granted, my experience with quest mods is pretty limited. Moonpath has some wonderful design to the environments and nothing else. Falskaar is impressive to have been made almost entirely by one guy, but is otherwise not worth the time.

Now, if we're talking about pure city expansions? I'm going to be knee deep in those next playthrough, and I've got a list of 30 or so that look awesome and develop the world beyond the technical restrictions of the PS3 and 360 in ways that I'm very excited about.

Interesting NPCs is uneven, though. It badly needs an editing job, cutting the text down to half of what's there. Right now the quality suffers from the sheer quantity, making the Interesting characters less credible at times (too much logorrhea) and from the mod's tendency to go for hit-and-miss quirk.

    Also:
Have you removed mods and kept playing the same save file? Sometimes it takes awhile for problems caused by that to become noticeable.
Nope, I haven't removed any mods in weeks - but there's one thing I changed just before the freezing problem started: I updated to the latest version of the Mod Organizer. I don't see how that could cause the problem, though, unless it changed something about how the game is launched. Possibly something to do with the Script Extender? The freezes happen fairly often, but it's not a complete freeze: the music continues, for instance. Auto-saves also seem to prompt the freezes, e.g. when I enter a city.

Remember my post about the sudden freezes? Well, the plot thickens: saving and loading take much longer - and here's the best bit: my recent savegames are all around 200-250MB. I have previous saves, but they're ancient, and they're around 5-10MB.

Is there any way I can find out what the problem is? Is there any point in deactivating and then reactivating all mods? What kind of problems might the latter cause? I'm kinda stuck here, since I want to finish the game, but in its current state it's more pain than fun.

Have you uninstalled any mods since you started playing? Do you still have autosave active?

The easiest thing to try is to go into a small interior space and wait for 30 days. If that doesn't work you may have to look into a save or script cleaner. I think SKSE has one built in but I've never used it.

  • ThirithThirith Registered User regular
I do have autosave active indeed; should I deactivate it? To be honest, I can't remember if I uninstalled any mods recently.

Will try the 30-day wait. If any of the people reading the thread have any tips, e.g. re: script/save cleaners, I'd much appreciate hearing them.

It's generally recommended that you should. I know it can cause problems in the long haul but you save files are pretty big; I don't think the autosave alone would cause it.

Especially since the whole thing literally happened overnight. I went from no issues whatsoever to regular freezes, ultra-long loading times and massive savegames for no apparent reason. :-/

Edit: Okay, some more info. I've just downloaded Save Game Cleaner, and in those saves I've got several 100'000s of references and active scripts linked to SneakToolsMaskSurroundingsScript. In between the game working normally and suddenly screwing up, I did join the Brotherhood and get the outfit, and when wearing the Brotherhood's mask/cowl I can't talk to people due to Sneak Tools. (That's a feature, not a bug.) I'm wondering, though, if it's the combo that's been screwing with my game, and that Sneak Tools keeps amassing scripts due to this.

    Among other things, yes.

What I'm looking at, if you're interested, is:
    -General
Expanded Towns and Cities - Mostly, it's this one. Especially now that it's integrated the otherwise dead Immersive Settlements, which I loved the direction of. It's the most terrifyingly well-organized mod on the Nexus. Jenna has the best worst case of modding OCD I've ever seen.
    Skyrim Sewers 4
Immersive Laundry - Yeah, that's right. Laundry. Bitch.
    Immersive Stables
    Immersive Stables - Vanilla Edition
    Skyrim Better Roads

    -New Settlements
Legendary Cities - TES Arena - Skyrim Frontier Fortress
    Forgotten Settlements (maybe)

    -Whiterun
    JK's Whiterun

    -Markarth
    JK's Markarth
    Markarth Reach Environment Upgrade

    -Windhelm
    Dawn of Windhelm
    Windhelm Exterior Altered
    Windhelm Bridge Overhaul
    Windhelm Lighthouse

    -Solitude
    Solitude Reborn
    JK's Solitude
    Books of Skyrim
    Legacy of the Dragonborn
    My Own Solitude Outskirts Improvement
    Solitude Docks District

    -Riften
    Riften - Thief Edition

    -Falkreath
ImpeREAL Empire - Unique Cities - Falkreath

Plus some other minor stuff, some stuff I'm already using (Skyrim Bridges, No Snow Under The Roof), a bunch of shop interior overhauls that I haven't really sorted through, and some other things that I've probably got in a list of bookmarks somewhere and isn't coming to mind.

I think another part of the problem is that the vast majority of writers I know do not have the skill, time, or patience to make a mod.

Like, okay, me. I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing, I've actually written for Wired Magazine (also EnWorld and The Escapist before the latter started to suck). I don't consider myself TEH BEZT WRITR EVAR because I'm very slow and bad at self motivation but I'm not half bad.

I have TONS of ideas for interesting mods. But then you get to the actual... stuff... and it's a combination of "holy shit what am I doing, what are all these... words that aren't words I know, or rather, words being used in ways I don't get" and "oh my god I'm not an artist" and "fuck this I have a deadline" and then also "wait, uh, I'm good at like... environment description and shit, and, like, all that is kinda... in the art direction... and little character tics like, even if I were a screenwriter the fleshy actor would be doing it, I have to like... tell this weird puppet how to run his hands through his hair when he's nervous? AND still have him like, say stuff, that's cool? At appropriate times???" AND THEN you have to be able to find a VA who is willing to do this on like, zero dollars and GOOD FUCKING LUCK

(... I'm actually not a half-bad amateur VA but I'm pretty sure a mod where I voice everyone would not go over well)

so TL;DR -- writing compelling narrative FOR GAMES is a vastly different skill than writing FOR OTHER THINGS and also both these skills are hard to come by in the first place and PROGRAMMING IS HARD GUYS

There's also a huge difference between writing narrative and writing dialogues. Even professionally written games (especially RPGs) have a tendency to be overly verbose in dialogues, going for a style where everything is exposition, exposition, exposition, and characters you've just met are happy to talk at you for minutes. Gamers usually get into that sort of stuff (possibly because genre fiction can have the same problem - quantity is mistaken for quality), so mods sometimes do the same, just twice as much and three times as long.

As far as my savegame bloat and freezes are concerned: I think I'll return to a savegame from three weeks ago, and I'll deactivate Sneak Tools since it's the likely culprit. Still annoying, and I think I'll take this opportunity to take a break from Skyrim, since replaying missions that I'd finished over hte last couple of weeks would most likely make me burn out on the game. Maybe I'll burn out on GTA V instead...

Morrowind's leveling system is built around training. This combined with a fairly broken economy means it isn't long until you can pretty easily train any skill from useless to usable. So really building your character should be about minimizing the early game annoyances. So along with your weapon and armor skills, take a ranged attack (Marksman or Destruction magic) and Athletics. Mysticism is a good magic school to take as well because it has all the fast travel spells.
