Yeah, basically I guess tying in game functionality to a hunk of plastic was just a stupid idea.
They need to make those cards asap so they can have availability of game functions now and easily in the future, with being able to make excess without a large financial risk, while they can keep the figures limited in availability or whatever.
Basically they should have made figures.
They should have made cards with in game functions.
And they should have somehow let the cards slot into the figures, and the figures probably should come with one of the cards.
okay they clearly underestimated demand for these guys
but by how much?
they don't want to pop out a million more little macs and find out they only needed 100k more
or discover that there was only high demand for little mac in the first place because of his rarity
Also, they have such a bizarre grasp on what their customers want, it feels almost intentional. Like, part of me thinks that the bigwigs who make the call on how many were printed decided initially how popular certain figures would be and are so confident in their analysis that they not only refuse to look at actual sales data, they outright reject it, because doing otherwise would amount to admitting they were wrong about it or something.
How else can you explain the lack of any new Metroid games since 2007, despite the continued success of the Prime series and general fan love. They didn't even acknowledge the 25th anniversary of the franchise a few years back.

I don't think the idea is dumb, but how they handled it was
they should have looked at skylanders or disney infinity and known what kind of demand/trouble they were getting into, but it seems like they just ignored extant evidence
From the impression that I got from early announcements of amiibo and stuff, I really think Nintendo expected everyone to buy, at most, one amiibo. Their absolute favorite character to train in Smash.
And if you look at the amiibo reddit, its not that uncommon to see someone with a wall or shelf full of amiibo say they should get a WiiU/3DS someday.

It's inherently different than skylanders because they work with multiple games.
They made Marth for Smash, cool, that works. Then several months later Codename Steam is coming out, and uses Marth. Will he be available at all? Who knows. What happens a year and a half from now when Intelligent Systems makes an Advance Wars game (hahahahaha okay I kid) they make a Fire Emblem game and want Amiibo support. Where is Marth at all now? Do they do another print run? Is it financially sound to? etc. It's a mess.

Skylanders also work with multiple games
I would say the difference is more that in skylanders if you can't find x tech skylander there are a bunch more
if they're going to have amiibos work with multiple games, having ONE SPECIFIC ONE be the only one that works on x game is going to drive up demand
I think that's more the problem than just that they are useful in multiple games

Well yeah who is insane enough to buy multiple of these things

I meant more that they work with more then one franchise and work with games with potentially very different release schedules. Where as skylanders wave Z is meant for game Z, but can work with other stuff.

I have kind of a hard time figuring out how I feel about toy/game scalpers
its definitely mean, I don't really have a question about that
But I also have kind of a hard time getting too mad at people who see demand and attempt to make some money off it, especially when everyone has the same chance to buy that product
I am also nearly certain I wouldn't be this ambivalent about it if it was for something I actually wanted

Eh
I've had people do it with things I want, and I don't get mad about it at all
Nintendo's the one not producing enough of the stuff
Scalpers are capitalists playing off of supply and demand, pure and simple. I've got no beef with them
I will admit that juggling crits with everything else does add another layer of complexity so that playing at speed requires more thought
But I love that stuff. Fire Emblem is all about out maneuvering your enemy, and I love juggling those pieces. Crits aren't even a particularly big element to me. weaknesses are much, much worse, since they triple weapon power, which can be way more powerful than a crit. Mind your pegasi
Granted I agree they need a no permadeath option for folks
I just contest the idea that crits can't be dealt with. They can
And I don't agree and that's ok!
I think you're probably right that turning them off won't be an option, which means I'll just stick with no permadeath, which is unfortunate, but at least I'll still get to play the game
Dude, this seems silly to argue with such finality. I mean, Wyborn wouldn't be saying "crits can be dealt with" unless he'd actually, you know, dealt with them. Clearly it's possible, since he doesn't have an issue. Saying "no they can't" seems like a weird hardline stance to take, since it's basically saying "no, your experience is invalid". You not wanting or feeling unable to personally deal with them is fine. Saying it's not possible is reductive.
I don't agree that they can be dealt with with any level of reasonability, no
Never moving anyone within range of an enemy that could crit them to death ever is, to me, untenable
if Wyborn finds that doable that's cool but its not for me, so I don't think they can be dealt with in my experience, no
I think you don't mean "They can't be dealt with"
What you mean is "I can't deal with them"

I bought a Toon Link and a Samus because I like them. I really want a Mega Man because he's my favorite. I'll try to get a Ness because I love Earthbound
but I'll admit that I'd be tempted to buy the rare ones I don't really want just because they're rare.

Yeah I think some sort of limit on how many you could buy would be the best solution, like with concert tickets, but I know that would be much more difficult with this sort of thing
I've only attempted to flip one amiibo and did so pretty successfully
When GameStop.com put the orders for Sheik back up, I went ahead and ordered one and was able to flip it for $40 before stores everywhere started stocking them again and she became common
So I mean
Totally used that as a way to get Pokemon Alpha Sapphire for $17
Samus is like the one amiibo who I hope they put out with a different pose. Because yeah I'll pay 15 bucks for a little Samus for my desk, but she's in like a dainty t-pose. Give me one where she looks like she's gonna blast someone. Or in mid shine-spark.
I feel like amiibo scalpers could make better money easier and faster in other ways, without inconveniencing people.
But if that is how they want to spend their time whatevs.

when I worked at GameStop, I bought off a customer for $30: a dreamcast, six controllers, the keyboard peripheral, Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2, Mortal Kombat Gold, Street Fighter Alpha 3 (I think?), and some other games I'm forgetting
I ended up selling the stuff a few months later because I was in school and broke; think I got around $250 or so total for all the stuff, since this was before everything had digital re-releases (didn't sell it all at once)
the guy was going to give me the stuff for free (since GameStop didn't take it). I said, "No, that would feel like stealing." and he said "Uh, okay, I guess $20?" and I said "I have $30 in my wallet, just take that."

I really like the Samus pose but I'm not rushing to buy common ones. I figure I can find some sales and get them a little cheaper if I wait.
I have an hour lunch break and within 10 minutes of work I have 2 GameStops, a Walmart, a Target, a Toys R Us, and a Best Buy. I check at least two of those every day
still haven't found one. Toys R Us and Best Buy at least have pegs marked for them now

Other M existed. It's not a Metroid game.

It's as much a Metroid game as Minish Cap is a Zelda game

three-month long delays and such ain't phase me anymore
sometimes fate decides you will never get the stupid thing you want, and you should instead spend the money on a sandwich and/or charity
It's bad when you wish a game had DLC instead of their current implementation.

I would like a DeDeDe and a Meta-Knight because they are also from Kirby.
I would also like Bowser and Shulk because they round out my favorites.
But I will probably just settle for having Kirby.

I already have Ness and Pac-Man preordered
I still want Lucina, Zero Suit Samus, Mr. Game & Watch...that might be it
I've got WFT, Shulk, Rosalina and Little Mac so my essentials are out of the way
