So this is my 4th PAX and I have never really gone after pins before. This year I might try, any general advice on this? Do you just ask random booth people if they have pins?
If you go to pinnyarcade.com, they have a spoiler with info on where you can find pretty much every pin that'll be available at East. Any of the exhibitors who have pins will usually have a big sign indicating such. The Pinny Arcade forums also have a lot of discussion about hunting down pins - the posters there tend to do sleuthing and dig up info that isn't normally circulated about where rarer pins can be found. Also, read the rules page on the Pinny Arcade website. Specifically, it mentions that line entertainment enforcers and PA staff can't deny a trade, which means that finding and trading with folks from Penny Arcade is a great way to diversify your collection.
My recommendation is to pick out the pins you really want on the spoiler list, research where they'll be, and plan stops throughout the weekend to get them. Big gets for me are that Twitch pin, the Blizzard Overwatch one, whatever the Harmonix pin will be (Rock Band 4 I hope?), and a few others. My itinerary already has a few pin-related stops on it.
This above post from PA shows what new pins will be at East, other vendors will have some too from older PAXes, so keep your eyes out (MC Frontalot, Katie Rice, Scott Kurtz, Kris Straub).
Get to merch early some morning to buy the limited edition Polygon pin, they sell out quick but will be useful down the road for trading. Buy show sets as well.
Go for freebie pins. They'll save you money. And go to the trading event on Saturday from 5:30-7:30PM, followed by the Pinny Arcade 101 panel at 8PM where I'll be a panelist!
Best piece of advice I can give you is to decide which pins you like and go after them. Don't let other people tell you that a trade isn't "worth it" or something like that. While some pins are rarer and more sought after you have to remember this is your collection, so if you want to trade a 2014 Kemper for a PAX staff pin go ahead and do it!

^ and don't forget to enjoy the experience hunting down the pins!
I would suggest getting the Moonrise Nemony Pin from Undead Labs because it is a nice pin, it is free(just play their game), it is part of a 3 piece pin set and Undead labs announced yesterday that they are going to be giving away steam beta keys for moonrise, so that is a nice bonus.
I am bias though because I fell in love with undead labs while talking with them and playing Moonrise and State of Decay at pax south.I wish I could have made it it east to get a pin and beta key
