All you need is a mini-usb => 3.5mm headphone converter.
Not 100% true. Make sure it's one specifically designed to run with HTC phones. HTC uses a proprietary connector that is compatable with mini-USB, but it is not the same plug. so any mini-USB charger will charge it, a mini-USB cable will connect it to the computer, but for headphones, the only ones guaranteed to work are the ones designed for HTC phones.
Just messing around with it while in the taxi: this thing is awesome! The media player's better than expected, the browser is quite nice (though I wish some pages 'filled the screen' better... is there a mobile PA?), the UI is fantastic.
For $179, and $25 cheaper per month than the iPhone, I couldn't be happier thus far.
After having owned an iPhone, HTC Touch Pro, g1, as well as lots of hands on time with some of the other iPhone competing phones on other carriers, I can safely say that I prefer the G1 to the iphone. Most of that, for me, is that I was already full committed to the google cloud. But as far as browsing and texting goes, it also wins imo. The iPhone is definitely close behind, and possibly tied on both of these features though. I prefer the zooming method on the g1 to multitouch. Multitouch was just inconsistent for me, and a pain in the ass to zoom way in or out of something.
The G1 would definitely get a solid endorsement from me for any type of user.
Also, I'm glad to hear they raised that 1gig cap. I hadn't heard that before I bought one anyways, but it's nice to have more freedom. Now we just need that tether app
Yeah I was actually just in the T-Mobile store activating my G1 when the dude told me it was 1GB, so beware there are salesmen out there who are still out of the loop. This was at an authorized retailer, too.
one is run by a company licensed to sell T-Mobile stuff, the other is actually run by T-Mobile
Ok yes that is actually what I meant. There is one on Market street that is an authorized retailer (as in they have another 'master name' in small print after T-Mobile) then the 'official' store I went to.
Ok so I'm having a problem. Under settings, my SD card is showing, with 901 MB free. However it's not accessible via my computer. Under my computer I see "Removable Disk: E" but it's asking me to insert a disk into E (whether I try to open or explore).
What happens when the 64 MB of onboard memory runs out? Will app installation leak into the SD card, or will I literally have to clean house when that happens?

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.

You'll have to clean up, unfortunately.
They may change that...who knows...

Can we get the chemicals in. 'Cause anything's better than this.
So far I'm really enjoying Quickpedia (like, it seems almost too good to be true). I'll have to wait until Sunday to know for sure how the NFL score checker thing works. Pac-Man works ok.
Do any of the weather apps allow for a graphic display of the weather on my desktop? I'm using the Weather Channel app and it's excellent, full featured, detailed- but I need to open the app up to see the weather. I'm looking for something that will display the current weather in my 'primary zip code/city' on my desktop.
Any winners?

Other than the keyboard and the battery life I honestly have no complaints.
Those are two pretty big issues. Care to expand on them?
Problems with keyboard (which I'm typing on right now): 1 keys too flush, very little tactile feedback. 2 autocorrect is useless, only really works for forgotten apostrophes 3 no virtual keyboard AT ALL except for the dialer. Thankfully points 2 and 3 can be addressed down the line with sooftware. The battery is what it is. Being used with all frills- gps, internet, music- it won't last until lunch.
I think with the sale of the new wireless band and the next gen wireless being put into planning we should see a lot of carriers change up their practices and offer a myriad of new phones and features. I think we are already seeing the shift in the popularity of smart phones like Blackberries, iPhones, and the G1. With new phone OS software like Android I think we should start to see our options increase.
Verizon is not a member of the Open Handset Alliance, which are the companies planning to make use of Android. Until they join the Alliance, they will not be carrying any Android phones.
With things progressing as they are though, I think we will see more members join up. AT&T nor Verizon are listed as members, but there are some pretty powerful members there that could influence others.
I would probably say that the next phone I buy (upgrading when I see what black friday sales there are) will probably be my last before a lot of big changes take place.
Verizon is a lumbering behemoth when it comes to opening up the network. If they ever do get an Android phone, expect them to be the last carrier to get 1-3 years from now.
I finally got my hands on a G1 today. Touch screen is very classy. Nothing but good things to say about the store and all available apps. Hell seeing the calendar alone, which I use very often on my Mogul, makes me wish Sprint had an Android phone. One with a good battery.

Verizon is like the Sony of mobile phone networks. They have a good product (their service and network) and they are by no means modest about telling you this and demanding you pay huge prices. They also don't cut you price breaks for their bundles (except vznav/vcast >>> premium plan). I'm just glad that they let you opt for no contract-length service now. I bet they were under pressure of lawsuit...
As for the G1 experience, how good was android compared to WM 6.1 on good phone (ie: diamond/pro if you've had a chance to use them yet)?
It does come with headphones that plug directly into the power jack, so no adapter is provided or necessary unless you hate the headphones it comes with.
Android feels as smooth as the Diamond/Touch Pro's TF3D interface, except instead of only being for specific processes (i.e. going into the calendar dumps you into unintuitive blocky Windows Mobile again) it's everywhere. Really makes for a pleasant experience. I don't think I could deal with a phone with no battery life, though it has made me think seriously about waiting until next year to see if maaaybe an Android phone comes to Sprint.

Any gems that aren't featured?

Who's taking bets on how long that lasts for???
Browsing PA's not so bad once you master the trackball.
It's been up there for at least half a week or more so far...
Emulators aren't illegal.
I can't decide
Who said they were?

will verizon be offering phones with android ever, or am I out of luck on that front

Personally for the functions I use (calls, SMS, web browsing, nothing professional) Android is by far my favorite mobile OS.
