I got my adapter (and microSDHC card) in the mail. They both work as advertised and now with some decent headphones, this phone is definitely 'at the next level' for me. I am incredibly pleased.
I'm moving from a first gen. iPhone and I'm most interested in the 3G speed, keyboard and GPS.
I've never bought an unlocked phone. Will all of its features work with AT&T?
Also, any word on the OS it comes with? Most important thing for me is that it feels snappy and allows me to install decent apps.
Which brings me to my next question: are there any decent apps for this thing? Can I tether it to my laptop?
It's supposed to be a pretty sweet phone. I like the keyboard, but the letters are really close together (kind of like the Blackberry Bold). It runs symbian (full specs here OS, which I guess is the most popular OS in the world still? There should be applications for it, but as far as tethering goes, I couldn't tell you. Have you looked at the HTC Fuze? I'm kind of a Windows Mobile fanboy, so I'd go with that, personally. The N71 is sweet for the price though.
Apparently the HTC Fuze has been showing up in stores the past few days and has officially hit today. Anyone have one or plan on it? My wife is strongly considering picking one up, especially with initial reviews being favorable.

All the normal "This is a Windows Mobile phone" shit still applies, with all the ups and downs that carries. I've been considering it, but I need to get my hands on one.. going to try to make it into a Sprint store in the next few days and see how it is. After trying the diamond my irritation with the Mogul's beveled screen grows stronger e'ryday.

Since posting, one of my coworkers got one and I've had some time to play with it. Initially, I support my girl buying one; it's a solid, quality feeling device. The touch screen seems to require a fraction of a second to register touch; requires really deliberate movement, but I found it easier to control with my gangly fingers than something more "twitchy". It's also a lot smaller than I expected, which made some touch functionality difficult to use.
The magnet that holds the stylus is strong enough to lightly hold it by just brushing the side; a nice touch, as you'd be able to pause between use without having to slot the stylus in properly.
Overall it seems pretty slick and is quite responsive. If I didn't love my recently upgraded-to $80 Blackjack II, I'd consider one.
So, anyone know when T-Mobile stores in non-3G areas will have a G1 for me to play with? I'm not about to buy one sight-unseen, but I'm also not about to drive to Portland. The woman I talked to today said they were never going to get them in the store.
Speaking of which, is anyone using the G1 outside a 3G area? Does everything work over EDGE/GPRS (their map doesn't differentiate between the two)?

I don't get that great of a signal at work to get a 3G connection, so I'm on EDGE all the time there and it works fine...

Can we get the chemicals in. 'Cause anything's better than this.
As far as I know, stores outside of 3G areas won't be getting them at all. It's possible they might, but I wouldn't hold your breath at least until after the holiday season.
The good news about that is that the 3G areas are constantly expanding. Have you checked how close you are to 3G signal on T-Mobile.com?

Well, that's silly.
I'm in Corvallis, and the closest 3G is Portland, ending around where 205 hits I-5 -- so about 70 miles away. I suspect we're not real high priority on the 3G front. That doesn't really bother me, I just want to hold the thing before I buy it.
Picked up a G1 at the T-Mobile in midtown a couple days ago.
I have to say that so far I couldn't be happier. I love the phone itself - the feel, the heft, the keyboard, the screen - all great in my book.
No complaints regarding battery life so far. For the past two days I've charged it while I sleep (which I used to do with my previous, 3-year-old phone anyway) and it holds up throughout the day great for my needs, which are basically some light texting, internet browsing, and some games on my way to and from work on the subway. Yesterday I was out of the apartment from 9am to around 11pm and the phone was still at around 60% charged, and that's after showing it off a bit throughout the day and using it at dinner to find a bar in the area (and I already have no idea how I ever lived without the browser/maps integration).
Because I'm insanely clumsy, I sprung for the clear plastic shell thing they had at the T-Mobile store. I've had the same type of thing on my DS for a couple years now, and that looks pristine, so I figured I'd go for the same thing here. A couple people have made fun of me because of how bulky it makes the phone, but that's actually a plus for me; I don't like phones that are too thin or small. I actually prefer the feel of my G1 + case to the iPhone sans case.
Service in NYC is fantastic. I'm getting better reception on the T-Mobile network than I was on AT&T, and the 3G service is incredible. T-Mobile's rate plans work out a lot better for me than AT&T's did, too, so that's a plus.
I've been playing around with it for a couple days now and I still haven't gotten around to customizing things like ringtones. So far I'm blown away by this phone.
On the topic of the G1. Does the google search work for you guys? Cause for me I have to go to the web then type in google.com then use the sites search. If I just use the google search tool from the home page it just gives me a blank screen that says Google with no results.
Kinda disappointing seeing as how they market it as a Google phone + Google!
Did you guys see the Blackberry Storm pricing?
$250 w/ $50 MIR (Gift Card) with 2-year agreement. Phone includes 8GB MicroSD card.
(Clarification: End price is $199)
Releases on Verizon Wireless on Nov 21st.
I REALLY wish I could afford the extra $30 for data and get this phone.. Kinda stinks that the LG Dare is the same price, but perhaps we'll see some price drops? Dare doesn't even include a 8GB MicroSD card.
I would buy the Storm in a heartbeat if I didn't have to get a data plan. I just want the touch screen and OS for texting/multimedia purposes.
Here's the deal:
I am up for a new phone, so I get $50 off whatever with my NE2. I text a LOT, and picture/video messaging is big too. I do not, however, need anything beyond that. I don't use extra features (navigator, music, etc) and I don't need data.
Because of my texting habits, I'd love to get a QWERTY keyboard, virtual or physical, but it has to be FAST. I've played with many phones where they can't keep up with my texting speed.
I would LOVE to get a blackberry, but they require a data plan.
I have been looking at the Env2, Voyager, and Dare, but they seem "overpriced" compared to full smartphones now. Env2 would cost me $80, Voyager $100, and Dare $150. The Storm would cost me $150 and includes so much more. The Samsung Saga would cost me $150.
So now I found this Samsung Saga which runs WinMobile Pro and has almost a Curve-style keyboard on it. I haven't had a WinMobile device in YEARS, so I'm sure many things have changed, but are they quick? Also, my father in law had a WinMobile Verizon device but he couldn't access pictures or video MMS on the device, he would have to go through the internet browser to see them. Has that changed? I wouldn't get a data plan. It would be nice to have my outlook stuff synced to the phone (through a cable) so that's a plus to getting a smartphone over the LG phones I listed earlier. Oh, and it has Wifi, which is a cool plus.
Through any Palm/Windows Mobile phone on Verizon if you're sending or receiving picture or video messages, that's done through data. If you don't have a plan your bill is going to be $Texas. On basic (Verizon's shitty OS) phones like the Dare you're not charged any data over and above your messaging plan for picture/video messages. Go into a Verizon store and try the phones for yourself to see which one you like best.

has anyone messed with the Storm? I'm thinking long and hard about it, maybe after Christmas. I've never used anything but a very plain phone before but I really want to make the jump.
Damn. I got a chance to mess around with the G1 and I gotta say I was impressed. The thing is pretty damn fast even on an edge connection. I think I'm going to break down and order one tommorow.

I'd love to have one. Sadly, there is zero T-mobile service here.
We're going to be making a switch in the next couple of months. We both want decent smart phones, both would like keyboards. I'd like something open, so I can use my own apps.
Our choices are Verizon and Sprint. Options?
Edit: We're coming off Unicel, and we both have the Ericcson W300i. I'm pretty partial to Nokia and Sony's sturdiness, and I refuse to touch anything Motorola. :P

My anecdotal guess: I sometimes get that if I have a connection as I execute the search but lose network coverage before the results render. Like if I hit enter on the keyboard as I walk into the bathroom at work. I occasionally get the "classic" or "mobile" screen you're talking about (I think it's what you're talking about) when on EDGE but it only lasts for a few seconds until the page finishes loading.

Our choices are Verizon and Sprint. Options?
Sprint has something like 95% of the coverage Verizon does at 50-70% of the cost. Verizon's also about to start mandating data plans with all of their smartphones. The Diamond or Touch Pro is probably your best bet for an open platform (Hurray Windows Mobile.) Maybe another smartphone if you want something a bit more durable.

Hey guys I'm going to do a detailed battery run through tomorrow for the G1 while at work. I will have screen brightness at full, GPS off, Wi-Fi off, gmail syncing on, music playing constantly without pause (with the screen blank, to conserve battery), and I will note phone time or text message usage.
Is this a fair benchmark for a typical day?
Monday I'll do the same but with more goodies on.

Is there any difference between the fuze and the htc diamond at sprint?
You mean the touch pro at sprint? They're the same phone. Might be some minor spec differences. The Diamond is the Touch Pro without the keyboard.
The Touch Pro gets 3x the standby battery life, and 1.5x the usage battery life. GSM blows for power efficiency compared to CDMA.
Really? I mean, I don't obviously have a CDMA version to compare it to, but my phone lasts a damn long time without charging. I charged it today, and the last time I charged it before that was Monday.
Again, I have no experience with smartphones. Mine is just a music player/phone, but it's done a damn good job for me for almost two years now.

I need to clarify that; the GSM version of the Touch Pro was known to have a problem with standby battery life. I don't know if it was fixed or if it was exaggerated, but I do know that on the whole CDMA is usually a bit better with battery life.
Got to Test out the Music player part of the G1, and it's not bad. I expected it to be a lot worse.
Now I actually have a reason to tag all my mp3s with their album art. Thank you MP3Tag.

I'm debating ordering the G1 or not. I really liked the online and OS, but I'm not sure if I want to drop cash on a phone that I really don't need. Hearing that it has a decent music player would push me closer to getting it

Man, I want my G1 NOW. (Actually, I need it, since my razr's mic is shot to hell.) Hopefully the one I get will include the adapter.
